AB - ABSTRACT: Spectral analyses for volcano-tectonic earthquakes were carried out at Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (NRV) for the period 1985-1996 for several earthquake swarms around the volcano, named North, East, West, South and Crater swarm zones. Important spectral peaks for each earthquake swarm zone were found by counting the number of spectra that had the same spectral peaks. Each swarm zone showed some characteristic peaks, which could help to differentiate between them; however, the most important peaks were similar for all the zones. These results suggest that the earthquake swarms at NRV were influenced directly by the source (activity of the volcano) and could also be influenced by the site effect. Some temporal changes were observed in spectral parameters such as a change in the frequency contents in almost all the swarm zones, and the frequency of the P-waves in the West earthquake swarm zone. Before the eruptions on November 13, 1985 and September 1, 1989, P-waves showed low frequencies (1-2 Hz) at the West earthquake swarm. After the eruptions, the frequencies of P increased (2-4 Hz). This fact showed that changes (decreasing of frequencies) in the spectra of P-waves at the West earthquake swarm could help in the monitoring of volcanic activity at NRV. This swarm zone seems to be related directly with the most important volcanic crises that have occurred. This suggests that the West swarm zone should be monitored in more detail in the future.

AB - ABSTRACT: The success of secondary and tertiary hydrocarbon recovery hinges on a reliable modeling of reservoir physical properties, most important of which are porosity, permeability, and hydrocarbon saturation. Reservoir heterogeneities prevent efficient drainage and sweep of hydrocarbons. The most efficient way of obtaining a 3D description of the subsurface heterogeneity is through seismic surveys. Seismic data can, in principle, be converted into a volume of the reservoir's elastic properties such as acoustic and elastic impedance. The challenge remains to relate these elastic properties to porosity, lithology, and hydrocarbon saturation. Rock physics provides this link. The needed relations between acoustic and elastic impedance and reservoir properties can be determined from well log and core data where all these rock characteristics are measured simultaneously on the same rock sample. We find that if subsets of log and core data are used that are constrained by a sequence stratigraphy framework, meaningful rock physics relations can be determined. These relations can be rationalized and explained by effective-medium models. The key to obtaining such models is consistency between reservoir's sedimentological characteristics (e.g., texture and composition), well log data (e.g., GR), and core analysis (e.g., porosity and velocity). We apply this concept to map highly heterogeneous reservoir properties in a Tertiary fluvial sandstones in the mature giant La Cira-Infantas oil field (Middle Magdalena Valley Basin, Colombia). By analyzing well logs and core data we determine a governing effective-medium-based rock physics model. The model implies that velocity and acoustic impedance are reliable reservoir quality discriminators. Specifically, high velocity and impedance correspond to shales while low velocity and acoustic impedance indicate high-quality sands. The model also allows for fluid prediction from P- and S-wave data. Rock-physics-and-stratigraphy-based interpretation of 3D seismic data appears to be a promising approach for the detection of depleted, bypassed and untapped reservoirs and deeper pools in mature fields such as La Cira-Infantas.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Llanos Basin, in Eastern Colombia, is the major oil-producing province in the country. In recent years, exploration in this basin has been focused towards plays in the Llanos foothills, where proven thrust traps present the possibility of large discoveries. However, the Llanos foreland still remains an attractive exploration target due to lower risk plays linked to proven production mechanisms. One giant field and over 51 smaller fields have been discovered. The basin, with an exploration well density of 1:500 km (super 2) , can hardly be considered mature. Improvements in seismic data processing, sequence stratigraphic analysis and a better understanding of the petroleum systems have led to a renewed interest in the Llanos foreland in an attempt to identify new plays and prospects. An integrated geophysical and geological study was done to evaluate the petroleum prospectivity of the East Cano Rondon Area, located 35-km southwest of the giant Cano Limon Field. The purpose of the project was to reprocess approximately 200 km of mid 1980's seismic, integrate the interpretation of the seismic data with the available well and geologic data, create a sequence stratigraphic framework and describe the hydrocarbon potential of the area. Reprocessing the seismic data gave an improved image of the subsurface from previous processing. The implementations of techniques like refraction statics, pre-stack linear noise attenuation (FK Filter), surface consistent residual statics, dip moveout (DMO), post stack signal enhancement (FK Weighting) and finite difference migration improved the static solutions, signal noise to ratio and imaging of the fault planes. The interpretation of the seismic data led to the definition of the structural styles, deformation history, paleotopography and identification of seismic facies. The sequence stratigraphic framework was built from the integration of the seismic, well and regional data. 5 transgressive-regressive sequences were identified in the Upper Cretaceous to Early Oligocene rocks. Two prospective areas were identified within the East Cano Rondon Area. One of them is related to the proven play of fault bounded anticlinal structures. Three fields in the vicinity of the study area have proven reserves in this play. The second prospect is based on a new play that is being proposed. The play involves the stratigraphic pinchout of basal transgressive sands deposited in the topographic lows created by wrench fault tectonics. The two prospects could have up to an estimated 759 MMBO.

AB - ABSTRACT: This work describes the lithostratigraphic characteristics of the Senonian (Coniacian-Maastrichtian) sediments exposed in the sector of the Barrera de Girardot-Guataqui (northern portion of the Upper Magdalena Valley, Colombia). Additionally and based on the microfossil contents, six foraminifer-biozones are established and two biozones of calcareous nannoplankton are recognized. The stratigraphic succession comprises: A), the Olini Group composed of two cherty units separated by several meters of black, calcareous shales that locally include thick beds of white-gray quartz-sandstones informally named "Areniscas del Cobre". B), The Buscavidas Formation, made up of black calcareous shales and micritic limestones. C) The Arenisca Tierna Formation in the eastern border of the Magdalena Valley and the La Tabla Formation in the central and western side of the same.
