United States Federal Government “Pacific Railroad Surveys” From 1853 to 1855, a series of explorations of the American West to determine a possible route for a transcontinental railroad across the country were conducted; termed the “Pacific Railroad Surveys.”The surveys were all-inclusive with information on geography, geology, paleontology, zoology, botany, and ethnography of native peoples. Five surveys were conducted including a northern Pacific survey from the47th parallel northand49th parallel northof St. Paul, Minnesota all the way to Alaska led by Isaac Stevens. A central Pacific survey included the region between the37th parallel northand39th parallel north from St. Louis, Missouri to southern California led by John W. Gunnisonfollowed by Edward Griffin Beckwith. Two southern Pacific surveys were conducted along the35th parallel north from Oklahoma to Los Angeles, California led by Amiel W. Whipple and in the southern territories across Texas to San Diego led by John Parke and John Pope. The final survey was along the Pacific Coast northward from San Diego to Seattle, Washington conducted by Robert S. Williamson and John Parke.
