3) Laulima: (https://laulima.hawaii.edu ) is the University of Hawaii's online Collaboration and Learning Environment. Laulima provides students with 24 hour accessibility to course content and communication tools for interaction with the instructor and other students within the course.

  • Many courses will use Laulima as a supplement to the traditional face-to-face class.

  • Online courses (WWW) will deliver all of the course material, testing, and communication within Laulima.

  • Students can use Laulima as a tool regardless if the courses that they are taking are using Laulima or not such as storing your documents online.


4) Assignment Information

Keep your assignment handy when you are doing your research.

Use it as your guide as you work through your research.

Knowing what your instructor is asking for will help you get a better grade.

Consult the librarian at the Reference Desk for help in starting your research or using library resources, such as online catalog and electronic databases.


Circulation Services

Apply for Campus ID/Library cards, check out or return books at the Circulation Desk. Also borrow reserved materials, videotapes, DVD’s, books from Hawaiian Collection, and back issues of periodicals.



Other Services

Computing Labs: Include Cybernesia: Library 1st Floor, and Testing Center in Lama 101
Intrasystem Loan: Borrow circulating books from other UH libraries by requesting on Hawaii Voyager. Get notified via email when requested books arrive at the library. Request articles also. FREE!
Computer Workstations: (UH Username and Password) Available on the first floor for web-based mail and Microsoft Office 2003/2007, which includes word processing, drawing, and presentation software.
Laptops and Wireless Network: Borrow laptops from the Circulation Desk, or bring your own laptop to work with the wireless network in the library. (For personal laptop wireless setup, go to Testing Center Desk – by library security gate)
Photocopying: Photocopy in black/white ($.10 per page) or color ($1.00 per page), at the photocopiers near the Circulation Desk. Use your KCC ID card as your print/copy debit card.
Printing: Printing from public computers is available at $.10 per page for black and white, $0.50 for color using your FREE KCC ID or Print Card, sold card vender machines for $1.00.
Group Study Rooms: A limited number of rooms are provided on both floors for groups 3 or more on 2nd floor of the library.
Secrets of Success Workshops (SOS): A series of workshops offered each semester at the library and other locations on campus to build your college survival skills. Go to the official website http://library.kcc.hawaii.edu/SOS for more information and schedule.
General Policies

The resources and services provided at the library are designed to support our students, faculty, staff and the general public in their scholarly endeavors. Everyone is welcome to visit our facility and peruse the collections. However, certain resources and services are restricted to those affiliated with the University of Hawaii system.


Common courtesy towards others and care for library materials and other property are expected from all patrons.
Circulation Policies

Uniform loan periods, fines and fees have been implemented throughout the UH system libraries since the beginning of 2003. Students can use their library cards at KCC and other UH libraries to borrow circulating materials.


The loan period for undergraduate students is 28 days, with 5 renewals. Renewals can be done online through Hawaii Voyager under Your Account. For fines and other details, please consult the library’s website.

Library Collections

Online catalog (Hawaii Voyager) used for locating books in KCC Library as well as the 10 Libraries within the UH System. There are approximately 75,000 titles of books and periodicals held in KCC Library, divided among the following collections.
General Collection

Contains books in all subject areas arranged by Library of Congress Classification System. Includes Oversize section at the end.



Location: Throughout the Second Floor.
Reference Collection

Contains ready reference (organized information) books in all subject areas arranged by Library of Congress Classification System. Includes Oversize section at the end. For library use only.



Location: End of the First Floor.
Periodical Collection (Paper)

Contains about 200 journals, magazines, and newspapers in many subject areas. Arranged by title in alphabetical order. For library use only.



Location: Current year periodicals are located near the Reference Desk in the lower pit area on display shelves behind the TV. 4 years of back issues are stored behind the Circulation Desk.
Microform Collection

Contains New York Times, Honolulu Advertiser, and Honolulu Star Bulletin on microfilm since 1980. Also contains selected magazines on microfilm such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and National Geographic since 1965.



Location: In the metal cabinets next to the Current Periodical Display area First Floor lower pit area.
Reserve Collection

Contains materials reserved by instructors for students to use. Check Hawaii Voyager Online Catalog by instructor or course for availability.



Location: Behind the Circulation Desk.
Hawaiian Collection

Contains books on Hawaiian studies. Open Stacks located on the first floor behind the Reference Desk. Hawaiian Reference and Hawaiian Special Collection books need to be paged at the Circulation Desk. Most have two-week loan period.



Location: Behind the (Paged Collection) Circulation Desk and (Open Stacks) behind Reference Desk
Japan Collection

Contains popular books donated by the Japan Forum and Japan Foundation. The majority of them are in Japanese while some in English.



Location: Second Floor outside the Char Room, top of open stairs.
Char Collection

Contains over 800 books in Chinese and English on Chinese studies that includes scholarly works to popular readings, such as Chinese philosophy, religion, genealogy, history, language, literature, food and herbal remedies, and the arts, including Peking opera, Hakka folk songs. For Char room use only.



Location: In the Char Room on the Second Floor.
Asia Collection

Contains scholarly books in Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.



Location: Second Floor of the library adjacent to the Japan Collection, outside Lama 207.
Read Collection

Contains selected classical and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. Books in this collection are popular with students learning English as a second language.



Location: Second Floor, near the top of the main stairs, outside Lama 201.
Video Collection

Contains selected educational videos for viewing in the library. KCC Videos are being cataloged now and some are now listed in Hawaii Voyager. Ask for the printed listing at the Circulation Desk.

Nursing Resources - Periodical Databases
EBSCOhost 2.0 Web (Mostly Full Text)

Collection of databases with some full-text databases covering social sciences, religion, business, computer science, psychology, health, education and more. Over 20,000 periodical titles are indexed with the majority available in full text.


Academic Search Premier:

Full text for nearly 4,600 scholarly publications (over 3,900 peer-reviewed journals). Index and abstracts for all 8,470 journals in the collection. Coverage: computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over 100 journals, and searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles. Updated on a daily.


Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition:

Database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines and features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. The majority of full text titles are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color. Full text information dates as far back as 1975. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong. Database features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names. This database is updated on a daily basis


CINAHL with Full Text:

The world’s most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 600 journals. Of these, around 301 are unique to this database only. Provides indexing for over 2,950 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 2,000,000 records dating back to 1981. Offering complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses’ Association, CINAHL covers nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.


Examples of titles offered in CINAHL include: AANA Journal, California Hospitals, Gastroenterology Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Journal, Paediatric Nursing, Parents, etc.
It has access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,200 journals are also included. Full text material includes 71 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.
Health Source - Consumer Edition:

Access to more than 80 full text, consumer health magazines, including American Fitness, Better Nutrition, Fit Pregnancy, Harvard Health Letter, HealthFacts, Men's Health, Muscle & Fitness, Prevention, Vegetarian Times, and many others. Searchable full text for 1,000 health-related pamphlets and 130 health reference books, including books published by the People's Medical Society. Health Source: Consumer Edition contains more than 4,500 Clinical Reference Systems reports (in English and Spanish); Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names; and Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary. Health Source®: Consumer Edition covers topics such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, aging, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, women's health, etc


MEDLINE: (Similar to PUBMED but with more full text and easier interface)

Provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing, allows users to search abstracts from over 4,800 current biomedical journals. Will import the full text articles from the other EBSCOhost databases.


Alt HealthWatch:

It focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. This alternative health database provides full text for more than 180 publications in the collection, including full text for many peer-reviewed journals.

Provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990. The majority of the full text titles included in the database are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color.


NewsBank (Full Text)

NewsBank is the world's largest full-text news database with 4,789 U.S. and international news sources, newswires, transcripts, business journals, periodicals, and government documents, updated daily.


MDConsult

MD Consult integrates 62 respected medical reference books, over 80 medical journals and 35 clinics, MEDLINE, comprehensive drug information, more than 1,000 clinical practice guidelines, nearly 10,000 customizable patient education handouts, online CME, and more. The Library's access includes the Emergency Medicine Collection and the Pulmonary Collection.
Journals @ OVID (Full Text)

The Library's subscription to Journals@OVID includes the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) Total Access Collection: of 344 full text Journals. Full access to all tables of contents and bibliographic citations for every journal in Journals@Ovid is also available.


STAT!Ref (Full Text)

STAT!Ref is a full text database from 2000 to present of more than 70 medical texts including tables and graphics, updated quarterly. Features the latest editions.


Science Direct (Limited Full Text)

This is the world's largest electronic collection of science (including social sciences, arts and humanities), technology, and medicine full text and bibliographic information. It includes over 10.2 million full text articles and over 60 million abstracts about 2550 journals and 1920 in full text. The University of Hawaii System Libraries have purchased access to almost every journal in ScienceDirect, from 1995 to present. 10,500+ books.


PUBMED (Limited Full Text)

National Library of Medicine’s search service to MEDLINE and other related databases. Full-text articles are available for some journals – Use the LinkOut Filter after you setup a free account. There is a short tutorial on Library LinkOut under Tutorial Navigation.

All books: will get you everything in the listing, most of the books have no full text.

Limited preview: will get you some current information. Part of the book are missing.

Full view only: will give you full text but mostly historical documents.
