The Great Serpent Mound
Scholars long believed that this mound was the work of the Adena peoples (500

. 200) because of its proximity to an Adena burial site in present-day southern Ohio. Recent research places the mound at a much later date (AD. 950–1200) and, because of the serpent imagery, ties it to the Fort Ancient culture, which is closely related to the Mississippian complex. The head of the serpent is aligned with the sunset of the summer solstice (June 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, an event of great religious significance to a sun-worshipping culture.
