The Alleppy finger variety grown in Kerala was famous throughout the world because of its high curcumin content of around 5 percent. There is no chance of introducing or cultivating new variety in place of the existing one to increase production. The only possible way to increase the productivity was through
the application of fertilizers, pesticides etc. But being a traditional variety, farmers were not willing to accept the new technologies and they were following traditional practices. Even though they were using some new technologies
it was not much effective, because of which there was only a low growth in the case of productivity over the study period. Moreover, the quality was most important than the quantity
in the case of alleppy finger, because much of the product was exported. The product being used for export, the pesticide residue
must be kept at low level, which limits the use of pesticides in this crop to a larger extent. The state maintains quality rather than quantity, through organic farming for the sake of export.
