Key Management Infrastructure. There is a strong desire to keep sensitive cryptographic keys, such as those used for SSL, from ever touching the disks of machines. Akamaiās key management infrastructure performs extensive security audits of machines prior to distributing keys to software on those machines. Multiple key distribution servers (which use PAXOS to coordinate their database replication) allow machines to obtain audits and keys even in the face of network problems. Machines which have not yet received keys will automatically suspend themselves and will not be included the mapping systems maps.
