This question became necessary to enable the researcher to correlate the littering of the city with refuse with how the waste is stored and collected at source. As shown above, 51.5%, which is more than half of the total number of respondents stated clearly that they do not use more than one waste bin for storing their waste. In many cases, as field observation shows, the waste bins in use are merely sacks or some form of nylon packaging (see figures 13 & 14 below) instead of

33 the litre wheeler bins the authority says they are expected to use. Even majority of those who use more than one waste bin as indicated on this table do so because the first sack or container is overflowing to the premises not because they are actually separating the waste. Across the 6
LCDAs, respondents who confessed to the use of one waste bin was higher than those who use two or more. The implication of the use of one waste bin in relation to the research questions highlighted in section 4.4 above is that, it is highly probable that some waste materials that are not properly containerized due to overflow from the bins are likely to find their way to neighbourhood drains or street corners (see spillover into drain in figure 13 below), especially with the slow pace of waste collection in Lagos as at the time of data gathering. To further answer the research question, a particular respondent in Mosan/Okunola LCDA told me categorically that some people come to dump sacks of waste in street corners in her neighbourhood and such obviously find their way into drains thus resulting in flooding during the rainy season since no one assumes responsibility to pick them up.
