Community engagement
As away of bridging the knowledge gap on the meaning and application of the waste hierarchy guideline, grass root community engagement is recommended, in addition to awareness over the audio or audiovisual media about the importance of source separation of household solid waste. Since the people are willing to learn how to separate waste from source, a community program can be organised in cooperation with CDA executives in each LCDA. The CDA is concerned with organising small sections of a neighbourhood like a street or group of streets, and they are closer to the people, so they should be involved with the logistics of putting this kind of awareness programme together. This can be done in the form of town hall meetings where environmental educators come with the tools (waste bins and dry waste scraps representing different waste categories) for demonstrating the process of source separation practically and explaining why it should be done. Interpreters should be on ground for translation into the local language. People who are traders and equally live in the neighbourhood should be encouraged to participate in this process since they can easily pass the information across to their family members who may have gone to work outside the neighbourhood. The contents of this programme, should among other things, include how to practically reduce waste volume at home as well as encouragement of reuse of items which otherwise would have gone into the waste stream without exhausting its usefulness potential.
