Note: Figures relating to 1997 and 1998 are not available. The Table No. 2 shows that the number of NBFCs has been drastically reduced from 51,929 into as on June 1999. The sudden decline in the number of NBFCs is mainly because of the new regulatory measures introduced by the RBI. Out of the 7,855 NBFIs registered with the RBI during 1999, only 624 were permitted to accept deposits. By the end of June 2009, the number of NBFCs registered with the RBI stood at 12,740, of which 336 were accepting public deposits. Table 4.2 also shows that there has been an increase in the number of NBFCs registered with the RBI from 1999 to 2002, after which there has a marginal decrease in the number of NBFCs registered.
