History.
McDowell writes that Muhammad (or Mohammed) was born circa AD. 570 in Mecca, Arabia, and died in AD. 632. Muhammad received visions from 610 until his death in
632, and he came to believe that these visions were from one God—Allah. Opposition arose in Mecca against Muhammad’s teaching, so he withdrew to the city now known as Medina. Jews and Christians also rejected his teachings. Muhammad adopted the famous black stone Kaaba in Mecca as the shrine of Allah. He gathered an army and returned to conquer Mecca. Through military might and other means, Muhammad promoted Islam, so the new religion spread quickly Today, Islam with its 1.4 billion adherents is the second only to Christianity with 2.1 billion adherents. Muslims believe that Muhammad descended into heaven from the site of the Dome of the Rock, on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
