2. Authority. The authority for Islam is The Qur’an (the word of God given to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. It is considered to be the very word of Allah, so translations of the Arabic are considered by Muslims to be inadequate. The Hadith, or sacred sayings of Muhammad, carry almost as much authority as the Qur’an. The Torah (Law of Moses—First five Books of the Old Testament, the Psalms of David, and the Gospels of Jesus all are considered as authoritative, although Muslims believe these Biblical Books have been corrupted by Jews and Christians
