Vehicle Technology Explained, Second Edition. Predicted future batteries may have considerably enhanced specific energies. A report in
The Economist (6 March 2008) predicts that new lithium technology will enable batteries to have specific energies of 350 Wh kg
−1
as early as 2020. This will give a battery 2.5 times the specific energy of the current battery such as that used in the
Nissan Leaf. It is very important to monitor constantly developments in batteries as well as their cost.
