Treatment A child with NO PNEUMONIA COUGH OR COLD does not need an antibiotic. The antibiotic will not relieve the child's symptoms. It will not prevent the cold from developing into pneumonia. But the mother brought her child to the clinic because she is concerned about her child's illness. Give the mother advice about good home care. Teach her to soothe the throat and relieve the cough with a safe remedy such as warm tea with sugar. Advise the mother to watch for fast or difficult breathing and to return if either one develops. A child with a cold normally improves in one to two weeks. However, a child who has a chronic cough (a cough lasting more than 30 days)
may have tuberculosis, asthma, whooping cough or another problem. Refer the child with a chronic cough to hospital for further assessment.
