Topic-102: Importance of VOT

VOT is an important feature in experimental phonology and it is used in order to analyze the nature of different languages and their stop sounds. Languages vary in terms of VOT and the delay (lag or
VOT) is an important feature to be explored for the comparison of languages. It also provides an important insight regarding the perception of VOT by bilingual learners. Language specific VOT values are further important to be considered by language experts. The VOT values can also provide information regarding the phonemic contrast of appropriate sound production by the learners. Moreover, it also gives an insight regarding the three different possibilities (types of VOTs). VOT is calculated through a specific methodology and important contrastive features are to betaken into account.

Remember that different languages choose different points along the VOT continuum informing oppositions among stop consonants. Different possibilities that occur indifferent languages are shown with reference to a scale going from most aspirated (largest positive VOT) at the top to most voiced largest negative VOT) at the bottom. The Navajo aspirated stops have a very large VOT value that is quite exceptional (150 MS. On the other hand, the normal value for the VOT of English stressed initial p would be between 50 and 60 MS.
