Dario Argento’s ‘opera prima’ L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo (aka The Bird With the Crystal Plumage) was premiered in 1970 and marked an historical and revolutionary debut, being a truly original and innovative thriller. The stylistic choices of Argento mark a clear step forward from the thrillers of that era and even the soundtrack was something utterly special. Argento assigned the score to Ennio Morricone, composer of the soundtracks for Comandamenti per un gangster, C’era una volta il west, Metti, una sera a cena, Un esercito di 5 uomini and La stagione dei sensi, which Argento had already written the screenplay of. For this movie the maestro adopted a particular style that draws heavily on contemporary music and on the studies of his Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. With L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo Morricone develops this approach and defines a 'formula': he alternates traditional songs, built around an easy and immediate melody used as a leitmotiv, with avant-garde and abstract tracks that amplify the state of uneasiness and fear of the viewers of tension and violence sequences. Cinevox released this soundtrack on an LP with 10 tracks in the spring of 1971 when Il gatto a nove code was already a big hit in the Italian cinemas. The record was originally issued in mono, with different tracks from the Stereo U.S. version. This is the first vinyl reissue featuring the original score in Stereo, enclosed in a brand new artwork made by Adventprod studios! The next one up in our series of releases from Don Peake is his classic score to Wes Craven's cult film "The Hills Have Eyes". Assembled and produced by the composer himself, this album features the entire score and a specially added bonus: The track slates of the individual cues! These short communications between stage and booth make the listener feel as if he were right at the recording session. The score is very eerie, and you might want to keep the lights on... Excerpts from the liner notes by Don Peake: "In 1977, Wes Craven hired me to score a very dark horror film entitled "The Hills Have Eyes". I was immediately struck with the brutality of the characters, and I decided to create a sparse and disturbing score, utilizing both acoustic instruments and a few experimental electronic instruments. I used "The Beam", a long aluminum channel (about 10 feet), strung with a single wire. The player (Craig Huntley) would slide a piece of steel up the wire string, creating a long glissando. I also had the prop master deliver the bone necklaces that the actors wore in the movie, to the scoring stage. I used these bones as shakers for the chase scenes. The percussionists each had a necklace to play. Mike Lang played the wild piano part for the interior search of the trailer. The strange viola sound came from an old recording viola with a horn attached, played by Toni Marcus" (STK652064) (C: 0-1-1) CD $15.99 KNIGHT RIDER: MUSIC FROM THE TV SERIES VOLUME THREE From Hitchcock Media. The third volume in a series of 7 CDs of original music from the classic 80's TV show starring David Hasselhoff! We are proud to announce the release of Don Peake's score from the the classic 1980s television series, Knight Rider. Knight Rider, as the voice over will tell you before each and every episode, was "a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who did not exist". For four seasons we saw crime fighter Michael Knight and his fully loaded car, K.I.T.T., fight bad guys. The show made David Hasselhoff a worldwide star while Knight Rider lives on in reruns and on DVD. Without question, composer Don Peake worked on one of the more memorable television series of the 80s. Along with his work on Knight Rider, he has composed music for television, film (The Hills Have Eyes, Breakin', Modern Love) and pop music as a guitarist in the Ray Charles Orchestra, Jan And Dean, Mamas And The Papas, Sonny And Cher and Hal Blaine's famed Wrecking Crew. Don played guitar on Marvin Gaye's classic, Let's Get It On as well as with other Motown greats. You've probably heard his guitar work on many of John Lennon's Phil Spector produced releases. His music for Knight Rider is a must own for any fan who collects or enjoys music from one of the great eras for television scores. Directed by Rupert Julian in 1925, this silent movie starred Lon Chaney in the lead role of the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to make the woman he loves a star. As legendary as its many adaptations on the silver screen and on stage is its history of fitting soundtracks. Throughout the decades that followed many composers and artists worldwide took up the task to write fresh new scores for this iconic picture. One Way Static Records proudly presents the latest installment in this tradition with a brand new modern re-score composed & performed by UK septet The Laze, Who have developed quite a reputation across the UK for their spine-tingling live performances and expansive soundscapes. Influenced by a history of horror soundtracks, from Bernard Hermann & Angelo Badalamenti to Goblin & John Carpenter, The Laze implemented elements of Progressive Rock, Classical, Jazz, Heavy Metal & Electronica in their score.
