SYNOPSIS
After his engagement suddenly ends, Joshy and a few his friends decide to take advantage of what was supposed to be his bachelor party in Ojai, California. In their attempt to help Joshy deal with the recent turn of events, the guys turn the getaway into a raucous weekend filled with drugs, booze, debauchery, and hot tubs. Written and directed by Jeff Baena and featuring an ensemble cast of hilarious comedic talents—including Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”), Adam Pally (TV’s “Happy Endings”), Alex Ross Perry (director of Queen of Earth), Nick Kroll (TV’s “The League”), Brett Gelman (TV’s “Married”) and Jenny Slate (Obvious Child) —Jeff Baena’s sophomore feature is a wickedly amusing portrayal of male bonding and emotional incompetence. JOSHY will be released by Lionsgate Premiere in theaters and On Demand August 12.

Lionsgate Premiere, Hulu and StarStream Media present a Destro Films and American Zoetrope production, a Bow and Arrow Entertainment production.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION

THE TREATMENT
While most films begin with a traditional screenplay, JOSHY was filmed entirely from a “Treatment.” The biggest difference between a treatment and a screenplay is the absence of written dialogue. The treatment is basically an outline, detailing which characters are in each scene, where they are and what they’re doing, and any pertinent information that should be revealed to the audience in that scene. Jeff Baena, director and writer, has developed a method in which he works with the actors on-set to create the overall arc of a scene based on the treatment; however it is left entirely to the actors as to what to say in the moment. The process is incredibly organic, but also requires a lot of communication between director and actor. Once the camera cuts, the director will often request that the actor keep a certain line (that worked in the previous take), or to try something different. While this style of filming may not be for every actor, many of them thrive in it, and have stated that it is very “freeing” to not be bound to a writer’s words.

The story of JOSHY mostly comes from the imagination of writer Jeff Baena. However, the seeds (so-to-speak) were planted from a few stories recounted to him by Adam Pally of his previous Bachelor Party weekends. It’s important to note, however, that JOSHY is not based on any one individual or story.

CASTING
It is safe to say that JOSHY was cast almost entirely out of previous relationships. It was clear from the start that the cast would need to be filled with strong comedic actors who would be comfortable with the improvisational nature of the film. Adam Pally was one of the first actors to be cast, as he had been involved early on with the development of the story. Soon after, Thomas Middleditch was selected for the title role of Joshy, after a meeting was scheduled with Jeff Baena, thanks to several mutual acquaintances. Jeff was then able to cast the rest of the roles with friends (Alex Ross Perry, Brett Gelman), friends of friends (Nick Kroll, Jenny Slate), or actors he had previously worked with. Interestingly enough, Jeff had met Alex Ross Perry at Sundance 2014, where both of the director/writers had films appearing. While Alex was not typically working as an actor, Jeff thought that he would make a great character in a movie, and thereafter developed a role in Joshy specifically for Alex. Seeing in that the (indie) comedy world is a relatively small one, many of the actors had worked with each other previously, such as Brett Gelman and Jenny Slate in “Married”, Jenny Slate and Nick Kroll in “Kroll Show”.

THE SHOOT
JOSHY was filmed entirely in tranquil Ojai, California. Several cliché bachelor party destinations (Tahoe, Vegas, etc.) were considered for the location of the shoot. However, it was important that the film be shot as close to Los Angeles as possible to accommodate transportation and actor schedules, in addition to the film’s limited budget. Since almost the entire film takes place in the rented bachelor house, it was decided that production could rent 2-3 homes in a selected area and use them not only for the shoot, but for cast and crew housing as well. This is precisely how it worked out, and Ojai provided the perfect locale. Three large homes were rented for 1 month; the film was shot in a little over 3 weeks, and the actors, producers, and crew lived in those homes for the duration of the shoot. While not a traditional arrangement for a “distant” location, a “film family” was formed almost instantaneously, and it’s an experience that will undoubtedly be remembered by all. Shooting in Ojai also afforded the production the ability to shoot under-the-radar; taking advantage of shooting on some of the scenic mountainous roads and at local establishments such as The Deer Lodge.

Due to the improvisational nature of the shoot, another important (and somewhat non-traditional) element was the schedule and a commitment to shooting the treatment in order. While most films shoot out-of-order to accommodate locations and actor availability, it was essential to director Jeff Baena that the film be shoot in order as much as possible. This was mostly to allow for character arcs and jokes to be created by the actors, to be brought back in later scenes, while protecting the continuity of the story.

ABOUT THE CAST
THOMAS MIDDLEDITCH (Josh) can currently be seen staring as the lead character in Mike Judge’s critically acclaimed HBO series, “Silicon Valley.” Middleditch’s performance as the shy, entrepreneur “Richard Hendricks” garnered him a 2016 Emmy® nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” along with a 2014 Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for “Best Actor in a Comedy Series.” The show has received two Emmy® and two Golden Globe® nominations for “Outstanding Comedy Series.”

Additionally, Middleditch will lend his voice to the DreamWorks animated feature, Captain Underpants, along with Ed Helms, Nick Kroll and Kevin Hart.

In 2013, Middleditch appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar® nominated film, The Wolf of Wall Street opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. He also appeared in Jay Roach’s The Campaign opposite Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

Middleditch’s other credits include: NBC’s television series “The Office” as Dwight Schrute's (Rainn Wilson) brother as well as films such as  The Bronze, The Kings Of Summer, The Brass Teapot, Fun Size, Being Flynn and Splinterheads.

Middleditch is a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and is a member of The Improvised Shakespeare Company improve group. He also regularly creates and performs comedy shorts with College Humor.
Hailing from Livingston, New Jersey, ADAM PALLY (Ari) has quickly found his place as both actor and comedian in Hollywood. Pally is widely known for starring as Max Blum in the ABC cult hit comedy series “Happy Endings.” He will next be seen starring in the new FOX comedy “Making History” which will premiere later this year. Recently, he will be seen in CBS Films’ Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life in October.

Previously, in 2013 Pally joined the cast of “The Mindy Project,” as a series regular for two seasons playing the fan favorite role of Peter Prentice. In 2015 he also starred in indie dramedy Night Owls, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as Slow Learners which he starred in alongside Sarah Burns.

In addition to his acting credits, Pally and his writing partner, Gil Ozeri, recently sold an untitled comedy script to Disney. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions to produce along with Chris Henchy and Kevin Messick. Pally’s production company, Clone Wolf Productions, is also developing numerous projects for broadcast, cable and new media with ABC Studios.

Previously, Pally was seen starring in the indie comedy A.C.O.D. with Amy Poehler and Adam Scott as well as in the comedy The To Do List starring opposite Rachel Bilson and Andy Samberg. Pally also had a cameo in the blockbuster film Iron Man 3 playing Gary the Cameraman. Adam’s other film credits include Monogamy, The Sophomore, Taking Woodstock and Solitary Man.

Pally has been a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade since 2003, and continues to both write and perform sketch comedy. He has written and performed in two long running sketch comedy shows at theatre with his sketch comedy group, Hot Sauce, an official selection and performer for the Montreal Just for Laugh’s Comedy Festival in 2007. He currently performs with DEATH BY ROO ROO.

Pally is a graduate of the New School in New York and currently resides in Los Angeles.

ALEX ROSS PERRY (Adam) is a director and writer and actor known for Listen Up Phillip (2014), Queen of Earth (2015) and The Color Wheel (2011).

Perry was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1984. He attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and worked at Kim’s Video in Manhattan. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

NICK KROLL (Eric) is the creator and star of the critically acclaimed series “Kroll Show,” which aired on Comedy Central, and he co-starred as Ruxin in the hit FX series, “The League.” In 2013, Kroll was honored with the BREAKOUT STAR OF THE YEAR award at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He will next be seen on the big screen in Jeff Nichols’ upcoming feature, Loving, which premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the New Line feature, The House. He will also be in the upcoming animated feature films, Sausage Party, Sing and Captain Underpants.  Kroll recently completed his nationally sold out tour and rave-reviewed off-Broadway run of “Oh, Hello,” which he co-created, co-wrote and co-starred in alongside John Mulaney.
Since Variety named him one of its “10 Comics to Watch” in 2010, BRETT GELMAN (Greg) has shown film, TV, web and live audiences how he “commits hard to the weirdness” of every role with a signature intensity and fearlessness that continues to earn praise from critics and peers alike.

A member of the Upright Citizens Brigade, he recently entertained television audiences as writer/performer/ringleader of two Adult Swim specials “Dinner with Friends with Brett Gelman and Friends” and the follow-up “Dinner with Family with Brett Gelman and Brett Gelman’s Family.”  The third installment, “Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America,” will be premiering on Adult Swim in the Spring of 2016.

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival is going to be an exciting one for Gelman as his Adult Swim special, “Dinner with Family with Brett Gelman’s Family” will be screened as an official selection in the Midnight Short Films section.

Last summer, the ubiquitous Gelman reprised his role as A.J. for the second season of the FX comedy, “Married,” opposite Nat Faxon and Judy Greer.  Other recent television includes recurring roles on “Another Period” opposite Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome, “Blunt Talk” opposite Patrick Stewart, Judd Apatow’s series for Netflix “Love,” a regular role on NBC’s “Go On” opposite Matthew Perry, and a starring role on three seasons of the Adult Swim live-action cop parody “Eagleheart,” opposite Chris Elliott.  He has also voiced characters for Comedy Central’s “TripTank.”

Augmenting his own experience behind the scenes, the Gelman-produced short film Gregory Go Boom, about a paraplegic man who leaves home to be on his own, won the Short Film Jury Award for U.S. Fiction at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

A native of Highland Park, Illinois, Gelman earned a drama degree from University of North Carolina School of the Arts before heading east to New York.  While in New York he discovered the Upright Citizens Brigade and spent eight years developing his comedic oeuvre, eventually grabbing the attention of Funny or Die, and the website’s co-founder Will Ferrell, with his performance art parody “One Thousand Cats.”

Migrating to L.A. in 2008, Gelman has since been in high demand.  He has appeared on a breadth of other TV series including those for HBO (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Bored to Death,” “Funny or Die Presents”), NBC (“The Office”), IFC (“Comedy Bang! Bang!”), Comedy Central (“The Kroll Show”), CBS (“Bad Teacher”), MTV (“The Inbetweeners”) and FX (“The League”), among other broadcast and cable networks.  His diverse work in feature film has included roles in the independent comedy Awful Nice, the 2013 biography Jobs, the recent indie comedy Someone Marry Barry, the comedy romance Watching the Detectives, and the Columbia-distributed comedies The Other Guys and 30 Minutes or Less.

A staple in the sphere of digital entertainment, Gelman regularly contributed his writing and performing skills to Funny or Die, making celebrities uncomfortable as host of his series “Mr. Celebrity,” among other pieces.  Currently, Gelman makes frequent appearances on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast as well as his own, Gelmania.

JENNY SLATE (Jodi) made her feature film debut in Gillian Robespierre’s critically acclaimed Obvious Child. Slate starred as “Donna,” a twenty-something comedienne whose unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was released by A24 Films.

For her breakout performance in Obvious Child, Slate won a Critics’ Choice Award for “Best Actress in a Comedy” and was honored with a 2015 Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. She was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for “Best Female Lead Actor” and a Gotham Award for “Breakthrough Actor.” Additionally, The New York Times Magazine, Time, Variety, and W Magazine acknowledged Slate as one of the year’s best performances. Slate and Obvious Child were recognized by the National Board of Review and various critics’ societies and film festivals including: Chicago Film Critics Association, St. Louis Film Critics Association, Phoenix Film Critics Society, Georgia Film Critics Association, Kansas City Film Critics Circle, Women Film Critics Circle, Sundance Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival and Newport Beach Film Festival.

Slate will next star in the following upcoming films: Gifted opposite Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer, My Blind Brother opposite Adam Scott, Aardvark opposite Jon Hamm and Zachary Quinto, and Brain on Fire opposite Chloe Grace Moretz. Slate’s voice can currently be heard as “Gidget” in The Secret Life of Pets which made over $100 million opening weekend. She also recently voiced the character of “Bellwether” in Disney’s animated film Zootopia which made over $1 billion at the box office and was named the #4 biggest animated film worldwide.  Next she will lend her voice to Lego Batman with Will Arnett.

On television, Slate has appeared in Showtime’s “House of Lies” opposite Don Cheadle, Comedy Central’s “Kroll Show” opposite Nick Kroll and NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” opposite Amy Poehler.
