PRONUNCIATION TEACHING FOR EFL

14th to 17th July 2014 Ref: 560/14 £360 Max participants: 12 participants

Course tutor: Dr Joanna Przedlacka

COURSE OUTLINE

This is a practical workshop for EFL teachers who wish to incorporate pronunciation instruction in their curricula. The course is ideal for professionals who feel they lack suitable grounding in English phonetics or need a refresher. The course will be useful for those who want to become more confident in helping learners improve both their own intelligibility and an ability to comprehend natural English speech. The course is delivered through a combination of short presentations and practical classroom exercises, consisting of individual and group activities. Only basic technical knowledge of phonetics is required, as all necessary concepts and terms will be covered as part of the course. The course is suitable for both non-native and native teachers of English as a Foreign Language.

COURSE AIMS

  • to present the English sound system and the phonemic symbols

  • to raise awareness of how phonetic differences between English and other languages may lead to communication breakdown and to recognise that not all differences are a source of difficulties

  • to exemplify and analyse selected differences with a view to applying this knowledge to teaching practice

  • to dispel common myths regarding pronunciation teaching

  • to consider how to apply methods and techniques to a potential future teaching situation

  • to consider ways in which a non-native English teacher can provide native speaker models for students

It is hoped that by the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • gain confidence in setting goals for pronunciation teaching

  • show an ability to distinguish which differences between English and another language may lead to communication breakdown and apply this knowledge to their teaching practice

  • understand how to analyse an EFL student’s speech, diagnose the sources of difficulties and make recommendations for future improvements

  • critically evaluate and adapt diverse techniques and activities for their needs

  • gain more awareness of their own pronunciation, and of phonetic aspects of contemporary English and how this knowledge can be applied to update their curricula
