AAB 83 covers period from 1956 to 1964, prior to his deployment to Vietnam but including his Malaya service. Ranks from Lance Corporal through to Sergeant inclusive. 3 RAR, 2 RAR, 1 RAR, postings, courses including : Tracking (1959), Air Photo Reading (1960); Basic Para (1963), Counter Subversion, All Arms (1963), Lists approval for his wearing of the ribbon for GSM., clothing & equipment issues inc weapons & covering initial issues, plus those for Malaya (this a separate sheet). Comes with a length of South Vietnam Gallantry Cross ribbon. The citation for "Dasher" Wheatley's posthumous Victoria Cross is published under London Gazette, 15 December 1966 pg.13567 for actions in the Tra Bong Valley, Quang Ngai Province,13 November 1965 with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). Engraved officially: "JOHN HARBOTTLE". Bronze, silvered & enamel in its Elkington fitted case of issue. Together with an original (2003 issue) NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages Registry certificate of birth of John Harbottle, born 3 May 1864 Sydney. Vendor states Harbottle was preventative man in charge of HM Customs, Sydney. This not confirmed from Australian sources but is a possible Imperial issue to an Australian. Together with 2 x pay books, original photos, discharge cert & biographical notes. Owen John Rowland born Bendemeer, NSW, enl. Tamworth 30 Jun 1915, 12th. Light Horse, 4th Reinforcements, to Egypt Nov 1915, France/Flanders from June 1916. Transferred to 4th Div. Arty as 2nd Lieutenant 27 March 1916, Temp Captain with 1st Div Arty 24 Oct 1918. MID recommended 27 Sept 1917, promulgated LG 28/12/17 & CAG. 18/4/18. Recommended for MC 9/10/1918, citation reads: 'Military Cross. On 8th October 1918, near Montbrehain, he went out in charge of a mounted patrol, carried out an excellent reconnaissance under heavy fire, and brought back valuable reports. Later, he observed for his Battery for two hours from the front line spotting in support of the attacking cavalry, and putting out of action a persistent 4.2 battery and nest of machine guns. Throughout the day he displayed great gallantry and marked ability.'. Source "Commonwealth Gazette" no. 129. Date 20 November 1919. (P) $8000 $12000 10031 1914-18 Distinguished Conduct Medal to Wounded in Action, 13th Battalion Lewis Gunner, DCM. GVR, impressed officially: "3930 L.CPL. C. FINCH, 13/AUST. INF." Charles Finch, born Youghal, Co. Cork, Ireland, enl Sydney 31/12/1916 aged 44 years and 5 mths, to UK with 1st PNR, BN, to 13 BN. AIF 17/Sep 1917, WIA (GS. left thumb), DCM recommended for action 8/8/1918, returned to Aust July 1919m, died 5/9/1935. A Lewis-gunner with the 13th Battalion, real fighting citation & who on the 8th August 1918, fought alongside Gerald Sexton, (real name Maurice Buckley & would later in the war win a VC as a Lewis Gunner). Both men were awarded the DCM on this day as Lewis-gunners with 13th Battalion. In the unit history of the 13th Bn, "The Fighting Thirteenth" Finch is mentioned on page 151 describing the battle of Hamel, "In all of this great advance into the unknown, from the time we crossed the Green Line, our scouts & Lewis-gunners were naturally the first to come onto the enemy or under their fire, & without exception, they were wonderful, over and over again rushing posts, or drawing enemy fire while their mates did so. The Lewis-gunners generally fired from their hips as they rushed ahead in order to get better shots at runaway bodies of enemy, or at machine-guns holding up any part of the advance. Corporal Gerald Sexton (real name Maurice Buckley, who later won the V.C.) saved many lives by the almost incredible, even uncanny, promptness and skill with which he used his Lewis-gun, quickly silencing enemy opposition on four occasions. While advancing through crops south of Morcourt a hidden gun fired into the Battalion and caused several casualties. Sexton stood up in full view of the enemy, calmly noted the position of the gun from the flashes & still standing, fired a magazine at the flashes and put the gun out of action. He received his DCM for the day's work. Pte. C. Finch vied with Sexton in this Lewis-gun work. Recommendation for DCM "During the advance near MORCOURT east of CORBIE on the 8th August 1918, Pte Finch was No,. 2 of a Lewis gun crew of one of the leading companies. Early in the action the whole of the crew except Private Finch became casualties. Finch then took charge of the gun & carried it and the spare parts bag, in addition to this panniers, right to the final objective. On more than one occasion during the advance he brought his gun into action most effectively, and when assisting to cover the consolidation, he continued to use his gun in a most aggressive manner. Observing an enemy machine gun in action on his flank he promptly engaged it. The enemy gunners immediately took cover but moving their gun to a better position, again opened fire upon our men digging in. Finch then, without regard to his own danger, rushed the gun killed two of the crew with a bomb, and took the remaining five prisoners, these & the gun; he brought to our lines single handed. Private Finch's great courage & fighting qualities cannot be too highly recommended." Official citation states: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the commencement of the attack he was No.2 of a Lewis gun section. Early in the advance the whole crew except this man became casualties. He took charge of the gun and carried it and the spare parts, in addition to his panniers, to the final objective, several times bringing it into action with great effect, and covering the consolidation by this fire. Finally he rushed out & bombed a machine gun killing two and capturing five of the crew, bringing them and the gun back with him single handed." gVF. James to Edward Zabiela for Saving his Life off Ushant, 27th. Aug. 1882 " on original dark blue ribbon with silver claw buckle suspender/brooch. aEF. Great research potential. UNIQUE. "Maori War" medal, undated reverse, impressed officially:"2297 SERGT JOHN CANNON, 40TH FOOT". Date "1848" impressed, unofficially after naming, (perhaps a reference to an enlistment date?). John Cannon (sometimes referred to as "Cameron") is confirmed as 'presumed' at the action at Eureka, 3rd Dec 1894 (only the casualties can definitely be identified as being there). Norton Gordon Hill, born 1876, Lieutenant with Victorian Garrison Arty 1898, to Australian Garrison Arty, Oct 1899 & Reserve of Officers Dec 1899, appointed Lieutenant for service in South Africa with the Machine Gun Section of the 3rd, NSW, Mounted Rifles Contingent. Op's Eastern Transvaal & Eastern Orange River Colony from April 1901, RtA & disch on medical grounds, Sydney June 1902, to Aust Field Artillery, Perth WA, Jan 1906, to Aust Garrison Arty Oct 1907 & to Reserve of Officers, WA, 1911. Recalled by RAN 1941 & to HMAS "Sydney" (II) June 1941 as Regulating Petty Officer. Awarded the NSW Police Association Gold Medal 1941 upon transfer to RAN. Photo in the monthly news shows Noble in PO uniform with ribbons of British War & Victory Medals. The original medals were carried aboard "Sydney" (II) by Noble & thus lost when she sank.
