10304 1805 TRAFALGAR Clasp Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 to a unique named, HMS 'AFRICA'. Impressed officially: "James Hibberd". Confirmed on roll as Ordinary seaman aboard HMS 'AFRICA'. Muster/ships compliment rolls indicate that Hibberd was born in Lambeth, Surrey and was aged 21 years on joining ship. HMS 'AFRICA' was a 3rd Rate Ship of the Line mounting 64 Guns with a compliment of 491 men. She was Commissioned 1781. Actions off Cuddalore 20/07/1793; Santo Domingo 1796. Converted to Hospital Ship 1798. Re-Converted to Ship of the Line 1804/05. 'AFRICA' entered the engagement at Trafalgar 21 Oct 1805 at 11.40 am until damage forced her to retire at 4.58 pm. She suffered 8 killed & 44 wounded during the engagement. Re-fitted, she later served in actions off Copenhagen August 1808 & against American Vessels in 1812. 10314 1809 Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 & two claps: To Lieutenant (later colonel), 13th (1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot. MGSM (1848), 2 clasps: "MARTINIQUE" & "GUADALOUPE", impressed officially (initials & first letter of surname contemporary engraved corrections): "T.E. KELLY, LIEUT, 13TH. FOOT" with silver claw-buckle suspender. 1898. Thomas Edwin Kelly joined the Army as an Ensign on 1 April 1806, in which regiment is not certain but he served with it in the expedition to Copenhagen in 1807. He was appointed Lieutenant in the 13th Foot on 11 February 1808 & served with that regiment in the West Indies, at the capture of Martinique in 1809, & Guadeloupe in 1810. Also in the campaigns of 1813, 1814 & 1815, in lower Canada, inc the actions at La Cole Mill & Plattsburg. His subsequent promotions were to Captain in December 1822, to Major in February 1837, to Lieutenant-Colonel in May 1841, and to Colonel in November 1851. In 1854 Kelly was in command of a Provisional Battalion at Chatham Garrison, and was shortly afterwards appointed Inspecting Field Officer in London, and Superintendent of the Recruiting Department in the Adjutant General's Department.
