Spend management tools

Just over half of bill-payers use one or more tools to monitor their mobile spend. In general, there are very few differences in the use of spend management tools between those who have received an unexpectedly high bill and those who have not. This pattern is evident for both post-paid and prepaid bill-payers.
The only significant difference between bill-payers who have received an unexpectedly high bill on their current plan and bill-payers who have not is the stronger preference of the former group to check usage by texting/SMSing their provider. However, the opposite is true for prepaid bill-payers—28 per cent of those who run out of credit sooner than expected use this service, while 41 per cent of those who have not run out of credit use this service. There is no clear relationship between the use of spend management tools and the likelihood of receiving an unexpectedly high bill or running out of credit sooner than expected.

Of the range of tools available to help bill-payers monitor their usage, notification by text message when a consumer’s limit is almost reached has the most potential to be useful (Table 5). Just under half of post-paid bill-payers who received an unexpectedly high bill on their current plan stated that notification by text when nearing their limit would be useful for monitoring their phone use, compared to 36 per cent of bill-payers who did not receive a higher than expected bill.

Post-paid bill-payers who received a higher than expected bill (20 per cent) were twice as likely as those who did not (10 per cent) to see a smartphone application as useful for monitoring their phone use.
Of those post-paid customers who have not received an unexpectedly high bill, 31 per cent did not find any monitoring tool useful. This was significantly higher than the 22 per cent of post-paid customers who have received an unexpectedly high bill on their current plan.

Note: Respondents can identify more than one category.

*Responses

 Denotes significantly different at the 95% confidence level.

Other factors that were investigated in relation to receiving an unexpectedly high bill do not appear to be significant. A consideration of pre-purchase factors, including new phone triggers, sources of information and the most important aspects of a plan, found that there were no significant differences in each of these factors between consumers who had received a higher than expected bill and those who had not. Likewise, when comparing the method of purchasing the phone between those groups, there were no significant differences.
