Questions and Answers

Why is the NDIA doing this?

To ensure we are building a scheme that is sustainable and delivering positive outcomes for people with disability, we are asking some of our current participants questions about themselves and their experience with the NDIS.

The purpose of these questions is to find out how NDIS participants and their families and carers are going in different areas of their lives.

The information gathered from participants will help us understand participants’ individual circumstances and outcomes. It will provide us with important data on what types of supports lead to good outcomes and identify areas that need development.

How long will the interview/questions take?

The questions will take about 45 minutes to complete, but it might be a bit longer or shorter depending on your answers.

What will I be asked about?

You will be asked about the impact of your disability, how you are going in different areas of your life, what your support needs are, as well as the types of services you receive.

For example, we might ask you about how you move around your house and when you are out in your community. We might ask about your job or school and how you are going there. Finally, we may also talk to your family about how things have changed since you became an NDIS participant.

Do I need to have anything with me?

You might find it helpful to have your NDIS information close by as well as any assessment reports you have.

Will it change my NDIS Plan/current supports?

Your responses will help us manage and deliver the NDIS to the thousands of new participants we will be welcoming in the coming months and years. While your responses will not change your current plan, they may provide useful information for you and your planner at your next plan review.

Can I do the questions online or in person?

The questions will be asked over the phone or at your next plan review. You can expect a phone call from us in the next few weeks. You can complete the questions then or ask to be called back at another time that suits you.

Can someone else answer for me?

Yes, you can nominate someone to answer on your behalf, we will just need you to give us their name and phone number.

Do I have to answer these questions?

Responding is voluntary, however your input is important to the ongoing management of the NDIS and will make a valuable contribution to building a scheme that is responsive to participants’ needs and experiences. If you do not want to answer these questions over the phone they will be asked again at your next plan review.

Is this research?

No, these questions are being asked because the NDIA needs data on how existing NDIS participants are going so that we can deliver the NDIS in the best way possible. All existing NDIS participants are being asked the same questions.

This is not a study being undertaken by an external research organisation.

I have been contacted by another group/about a different project. Are they the same?

You may be contacted regarding different projects currently underway.

As well as this project, which is being conducted by external consultants (Assessments Australia and Australian Healthcare Associates) on behalf of the NDIA, you may be called, emailed or written to about other projects that require information from participants. These include:

  • A survey being undertaken by the National Institute of Labour Studies at Flinders University. This survey relates to an independent review of the NDIS, which was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. More information is available on the NDIS Evaluation website.

  • An interview about NDIS plans. Participants are being asked to take part in interviews about how they use the supports in their plans. This project is being conducted by an external consultant (Dyson Consulting Group) on behalf of the NDIA.

Who can I contact for more information?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this survey, please email us at scheme.actuary@ndis.gov.au. Someone from the NDIA will contact you to discuss these further.
