4. A frequently noted example is how George Lucas’s Star Wars plagiarized Mézières’s drawings for Valérian et Laureline (Gabilliet, 2010: 349). See also an interview with Pierre Christian, the writer on the series, available at http://www.europecomics.com/a-model-for- star-wars/ (accessed 23 March 2016).
5. All three comics are available as freestanding works one expansion of this study would be to include representations of the Bosnian War in newspaper strips and editorial cartoons
(Dodds, 1998). The three comics discussed in this article are also written, drawn and coloured by one person these functions are frequently distributed between two or three people, or even a team 6. Email correspondence with Strip Art Features, 13 February 2015, and Dupuis, 18 February

7. Translations of Sarajevo Tango and Le Sommeil du Monstre from French to English are mine 8. The photo made Arkan issue a death warrant on Haviv, stating in public that he [Arkan] looked forward to the day he could drink my blood (Haviv, 2000: 189).
9. Johan Spanner, a photojournalist with extensive experience covering armed conflicts, points out that Hermann’s remediation of Haviv’s photo leaves out how Arkan’s men have taped together their ammunition magazines in pairs, one facing down, so as to have the double amount of rounds at the ready. To the trained eye, this would indicate a combat-proven unit, rather than your standard conscription-soldier outfit This is most visibly the case with the soldier on the furthest left. This omission paradoxically detracts from the menacing, professional representation of Serbian soldiers. Johan Spanner, email communication, 2 February 2015.
10. Bande dessinée is the term used for comics in the francophone context. Email correspondence with Humanoids, 21 March 2016. See also http://www.humanoids.
