Born in 1898, Paul Robeson was the son of a runaway slave. He was the only black student to try out
for the Rutgers University football team. In response, the other players beat him up and pulled out his
fingernails. He bore the abu8e to prove his worth. He not only graduated at the top of his class, but
had been an All -American, the top honour for a university football player, twice. Within four years
after graduation, he was one of the best -known actors and singers in the United States. Yet because
he was a black man with strong political beliefs, he was forced to spend much of his life in England,
and when he did return to the United States, his passport was
taken away.
