  • Quartered safe out here – George Macdonald Fraser (own account of combat – v.good)

Current Affairs

  • Descent into Chaos: How the War Against Islamic Extremism is Being Lost in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia – Ahmed Rashid  (A bit heavy going but extremely good account of the issues in Afghan and central Asia – current as of 2008 though)

  • Whoops! - Why everyone owes everyone and no one can pay – John Lanchester (an easy to read book that gives a good, accessible overview of the financial crisis)

General Interest

  • Flashman – George Macdonald Fraser  (comedy, history, YO mischief – classic)

  • 1984 – George Orwell (existential genius – great read not in the slightest military though)

  • A Brave New World – Aldous Huxley (Another existentialist book – not a theme probably the student in me still, very good)

  • Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage to the Antarctic – Alfred Lansing (Clearly about the epic adventure and very well written)

  • Six Days - Jeremy Bowen (Brilliant account of the 6-day 1967 Israeli war  – classic manoeuvrist stuff)
