House on Horace Caldwell Pier said, "There's quite a big variety out here right now." Anglers have brought in "lots and lots of speckled trout," redfish, black drum, whiting, gafftop, pompano, sheepshead and bonnethead, blacktip and Atlantic sharpnose shark.

Redfish, redfish, and more redfish. We could rename Port Aransas, Port Redfish. They are caught year round, consistently and in abundance. And they're good to eat fried, steamed, baked, grilled, blackened, smoked or seared. Beverly Fintel at Barnacle Bill's Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers have brought in trout, redfish, black drum, sheepshead, "a lot of Spanish mackerel," and shark.

Tracy Ingalls at Barnacle Bill's Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers have brought in trout, redfish, black drum, sheepshead and several varieties of shark.

John McNatt at Fisherman's Wharf reported offshore catches of amberjack, kingfish and big hammerhead shark. North jetty anglers brought in redfish and speckled trout.

Started off slow, with mainly small to medium pomps somewhere near PINS MP 8. Picked that spot almost at random because there were no waves breaking and the sun was still too low to see the guts and bars. Made several more stops every few miles down to the 20, but, although the pomps got bigger, we'd get only a couple at most at each location. After lunch, we backtracked to about the 17 to a place where if you waded as far as you could and cast up on the far bar you could get some very decent fish to bite with regularity. Wore out catching big stingrays, too, but that's been the case every trip this month. C.H. even broke my trusty gaff on one, so watch out for that ray; it's swimming around with a barb on BOTH ends.

C.H., Richard, Ed Graf and I boxed 18 pomps to 5 lbs; the majority needed gallon ziplocs. Only one whiting, but that's more than the last trip.

Tracy Ingalls at Barnacle Bill’s Pier House at Horace Caldwell Pier reported

catches of big gafftop, oversized redfish, pompano, shark and sheepshead.

The big catch of the week off Horace Caldwell Pier was a 6’3” blacktip shark. In addition to that, according to Bill Fintel at Barnacle Bill’s on the pier, nice sheepshead and a lot of nice redfish are being caught. The trout have slowed down, and anglers are reeling in Spanish mackerel, and like everywhere else, a few flounder. Night fishing trumps day fishing, Fintel said.

10-15-09

Bev Fintel at the Horace Caldwell Pier said pier anglers have caught nice black drum and sheepshead. With the colder, windy weather, not too many anglers are out there, but the fish are there for the catching

Fished Tuesday thru Thursday in the surf. Caught approx 100 whiting in three days. Around 30 to 40 each day. Most were around 12 to 13 inches....with a few around 15 to 16 inches. Last three hours of the outgoing and first couple hours of incoming. Fished Newport access Tuesday. Tried the surf near Packery jetties Wednesday but the red tide ran us off. Found good beach about two miles south of Caldwell pier. Fished that same area on Thursday. Had cut whiting out all three days and only one 19 inch red to show for it. Whiting were thick though. Caught all our whiting Thursday with very visible red tide throughout the surf. With the strong northwest wind, we had no effects from it. Fish didn't mind either. Fished the pier on CC NAS Tuesday and Wednesday night under the lights. Caught somewhere around 200 sand trout and specks. Kept the best 50 sandies. Most 11 to 12 inches. Lost count of 14 inch specks. All on jighead with 3 inch glow Gulp swimming mullet, DOA glow/gold paddle tail, or 2 inch new penny Gulp shrimp. Had a hit every cast. Lots of fun. Also caught 10 mangrove snapper on the 2 inch Gulp new penny shrimp around the sea wall next to the pier. I would jig the shrimp over the rocks next to the sea wall. The little snapper would come out of the rocks and slam it. That was fun too. Would like to try that in an area with higher populations of mangrove snapper. Any suggestions? They love that little gulp shrimp. It was a great three days of fishing. Spent two hours today cleaning fish. Got 12 quart bags of filets out of it. Lots of fish fries!

Saw probably 20 huge pomps landed, a couple of whiting and a couple of bluefish, Hit the end and setup. Live mullet on two rods, shrimp on the bottom on another, bobber setup and my Daiwa 50 with a chunk of skipjack. Now we sit and wait.......and wait........and wait....................2 hours later the 50 clicks twice and I'm pumped. Not much of a fight,.....22" Gafftop.
Checked the mullet rods, bait gone. Assumed it was crabs as this happened all day long. Put a live piggie on the bottom and 20 min later checked it and saw that the 60# leader had been bitten threw. Busted out the steel leaders. Sheepies are hanging out pretty thick around the pylons feeding on the barnacle. Slow, so I attempt to fish for those with no luck. Group of people 4th light on right reel in a couple of nice size pomps. We ended up with 2 good size pomps dead shrimp on the bottom. My buddy show up and I'm at the other end of the T and he yells out and runs to the 50 which I put a 5" head section of the skippie on and said that it was a solid run. Wait about a min and reel it in to find Shark had bit everything except where the hook was. Oh well. All in all it was a excellent day to be on the water. Fishing is just a bonus. Saw probably 20 huge pomps landed, a couple of whiting and a couple of bluefish. By the way, when we showed up around 730, no charge, my buddy showed up round 10ish and there was someone there in the cage charging folks. Sign says resturant closed.....

11-3-09

C.H. and I tried 3 spots between PINS MPs 19 & 23. Water fairly sandy and waves increasing all day, so we got pretty worn out wading to hit the 2nd gut with peeled shrimp & Fish'nStrips. Worst thing was getting fish in each spot, but having to move when the dead seagrass collected on the line faster than the fish bit. Boxed 11 pomps, 4 whiting and 3 slot reds. All but one of the pomps were quart ziploc fillers, and there were a couple thrown back that on hungry days we would have kept. Bait stealers were almost non-existent.

11-5-09

Angel Tomacek at the Horace Caldwell Pier reported schools of Spanish mackerel off the pier. Plenty of redfish and black drum were caught, along with a variety of shark and some gafftop.

11-5-8, 2009

Headed down to PINS last Thursday, trailer and GP Medium in tow. Went down to 25 with Red Tide showing up in the surf around 19. By 25, you could smell it bad enough that each breath made you cough. But with the NE winds and strong south current, decided to set up at 22 on what we thought was a nice stretch of elevated beach...and it had some nice structure to boot. We were awarded with three reds and two very nice pomps in short order. Little did we know what the east wind and Ida would provide for us...

Friday, the fishing was fairly slow and the effect of the Red Tide ever more evident on the nose. A stretch of about four hours on the incoming tide made for some unpleasant breathing, but we stuck it out and were rewarded again-- fried oysters and buttermilk dredged chicken fried steak for dinner, a nice fire, fine cigars.... oh, and a handful of very nice pomps and some of the largest whiting I've ever seen (each one in the 1.5 lbs range). Friday night, we were greeted with the tide in the tent...but most of us slept through it. The surf for the day was rough to say the least.

Saturday, the fishing started off slow again. The Red Tide came back in a little less strong on the incoming tide. The wind shifted a bit more out of the NE. The surf was even more angry. But with a little help of a few shovels, we managed to hold off the tide. Again, we were rewarded-- New York Strips, baked potatoes, some nice red wine...of course cigars...another heck of a fire...and another handful of similar sized pomps and whiting. The whiting made for a nice fish fry on the beach for lunch earlier in the day. Saturday night, the rains hit, with the Red Tide violently in place just prior to the winds dying out from the SE. Then, it was gone.

Sunday led to some high performance driving. Pulling a 4000 lbs trailer off the beach at "low" tide with more cabbage heads on the beach than you could shake a stick at....well, we got a little dirty, the trailer went airborn a few times, but, by golly, we got it off the beach in one piece.

11-12-09

Angel Tomacek at the Horace Caldwell Pier remarked that plenty of redfish, black drum, pompano, flounder and gafftop were caught before the flooding. She said she thought she caught a flounder, but her “Hannah Montana fishing pole couldn’t get it all the way up to the pier.”

11-13-09

At about PINS MP 17 the water was slightly sandy, there was little weed, and until just before noon the waves were less than 2 feet. We boxed 43 pomps, about half of which were gallon Ziploc fillers. While we ate lunch around 11, C.H. made a couple of casts from shore and caught 2 large whiting, but almost every long cast made by wading and casting over the far bar resulted in a pompano or a double. Aside from one large stingray, there were no bait stealers. Used peeled dead shrimp and Fishn'Strips.

11-13-14, 2009

pompano were chewing heavy just about everywhere on the pier. bagged 26 the two days i fished. lots of good size ones up to 3 - 4 lbs. black drum were coming over the rails too in the 21" - 24" fish.

sunday was a total wash, lots of weeds and murky water. schools of pomps was a no show. saw only 2 small pomps yanked out from the water today

11-18-09

Waves flat, water clear, wind at our backs, tide way out. A lot of blackened grass fragments in the guts in places, but otherwise as good as it gets to fish pomps. Matt had to stay in Houston, but C.H., Richard and I boxed 1 whiting, 1 bluefish, 1 24-inch smack, and 50 pomps. About 10 of those were caught at PINS MP 17, but they bit slowly and small compared to last Friday, so we bounced our way through the ruts in Big Shell and set up again at an easy pitch somewhere in the upper 30s. Knocked off at 1300.

11-18-09

Here are the pictures I was able to take before the frenzy started, Once the water came back into the wade gut the bite was on big time. Sandflea had 3 rods going off at once and was having a blast. We were using a new bait called fishbite stuffed sand dollars... What you do is take fishbites and get them mushy and stuff the goo into a half of a fresh dead sand dollar. Before you can say Ultima line, you got a gigantic POMP.. Maybe even 6-7 pounder. Ended up with 51 POMPs total. One 27.99999999 inch Red fish & many Bull Whitings. I had a lovely time with Nick, Dalyn, Ray, Mike, Colin. I was great to see Oz from a distance. Nice to see Jack, Bob and company. It was one of the most awesome days lately. BTW, tons of good fire wood everywhere.. I have many videos from the helmet cam for later. Take care,

11-18-09

My buddies and I were in a yellow jeep about three or four miles further down the beach from you all. We put a lot of pomps into the box between 11 and 3. It was like a switch went off at 3:30 and they all went home. Too much trouble for me to post pics on this site as it will not work with my Easyshare and I just can not get Tinypics to work without a hassle. Anyway....it was sure a nice day out there.
Thanks for the great pics.

11-18-09

TH hit it right on the head again, as usual!!! We started late as I couldn't decide which way to go, take the boat out? or hit the sand?
It was a perfect day either way........ and the call of the wild Pompano won out. Since it was 10:00am when we hit the end of the blacktop I didn't try to go far and we stoped about the 17 to start when we found a real nice point. Had a bull whiteing on the first set and a nice Pomp on the second......... then nothing for the next 45min. or so. That forced a move down to the next likely looking point. This time it was all Pomps, one every 10 to 15 min. it seemed. The first one was a beast and since I had the screamer set on my longbeach it let everyone know when he left at a high rate of speed. You know it's a good'un when they start jumping with 4oz. of lead hanging out their mouth!!! So we wound up with 7 or 8 before my old bad back finaly gave out..... dang I'm gona have to get in shape. That's bad when 18" Pomps wear a man out so fast. Burt it sure was fun!!!!

11-19-09

Nicole Buitron at the Horace Caldwell Pier reported oversized redfish caught in large amounts, most 38 inches and up.

11-22-09

Water was still a little high and sandy down south in PINS, making it hard to find structure, but winds were light and got lighter. Found fish a couple of times, but the dead weed was a trial. Finally settled in around MP 36 at a broad, wadeable spot where we could cast almost across the 2nd gut. C.H., Richard and I boxed 23 pomps, 17 whiting, 1 red and 1 black drum.

11-22-09

Nice catch. I was there today as well. The action was pretty good. I landed a 24 inch red, a nice 20 inch drum and 8 pompano. I found a point about 7 or 8 miles down before Little Shell, and stayed there most of the day. The water was muddy and weedy. All fish were taken in the second gut.

11-22-09

Had a short window of opportunity that allowed me to be out for a few hours. Fished from the 4X sign to the 16, for a red, 2 pomps (Nick witnessed it), 2 whiting and two undersize drum. Still a fun day though. Just strteching my wings on the surf fishing deal, and did manage to christen the LDX and Daiwa 20 that I bought yesterday. Did have one thing happen that seemed odd. Did not witness the bite, but was winding in and as I took slack out line came tight, and then broke, though it appeared like it may have broke at the uni to "blob" connection on the shock leader...It was time to head on back, though hated losing a leader...
Beginning of the day

11-23-09

Few big pomps sbh

11-23-09

The window was open, the front door was open, the back door was open, and the attic vent was open. The bottom line? 15 pomps boxed between 12:30 and 3. Live shrimp caught the bigest ones today, and I was using live shrimp.

11-23-09 Pomps breakaway

11-23-09 PINS

Rolled down in the morning... water dirty but cleared as the day went on. Jay and I started banging out fish, and then in the afternoon Curmit and Nate showed up to partake in the slaughter.

We ended up catching over 100 of these critters(??)

Also nailed some Bull Reds and one Bull Shark. Done with this boring Pompano crap, going back to Shark Fishing.

11-23-09 Pomps bit hard south of Bob Hail pier

11-28-09

I ended up at the 25mm and caught 30 nor 40 whiting which were all released, 2 reds-1 24inch and 1-26inch, 1 bluefish, 3pomps, and 5 black drum. Great day but once the tide started moving all the grass started moving also. Saw a lot of people and stoped and talked to a few who were all after the pomps and I only heard people were catching them sparadically, but lots of black drum being caught. I got home by 2:30 with my icechest full of fish and then 3 hours of cleaning them. Would not trade it for the world!!!

11-26-09

Theresa Hornburg at the Horace Caldwell Pier reported “trophy-sized redfish,” caught, including one over 60 inches, as well as blacktip shark. John McNatt at Fisherman’s Wharf reported offshore catches of kingfish, Atlantic sharpnose shark, vermilion snapper and lane snapper. Several amberjack were released as well. Jetty anglers caught oversized redfish and speckled trout.

11-27-09

I took my dad fishing around the MM 20 today and it was a blast. We fished from about 9 am until around 2 pm and had to stop because the cooler was full. Water was a little choppy, but we managed 8 pomps, 14 whiting, 2 big slot reds and 1 slot black drum. There was no problem at all with weeds this time. Both of us were using pomp riggings most of the time, with the typical peeled shrimp and fishbite combination.

11-28-09

C.H. and I boxed 1 red, 1 bluefish, 4 black drum, 6 Pomps and 9 whiting. C.H. and I boxed 1 red, 1 bluefish, 4 black drum, 6 Pomps and 9 whiting. Tried fishing PINS at about the 18, the 23, and the 24. Water a little murky, and carrying varying amounts of vegetation, mainly in the first gut. Wind and waves not too bad for long casting. Driving in Big Shell really poor, especially when having to dodge so many vehicles set up near the water and/or the ruts. The campers mainly stuck to the upper beach and were no problem, though. Was surprised how many people had dogs on PINS, especially after the posts here and on Nick's board, and since they were warning folks at the gate about the dog & coyote deaths. We did see one truck with a dog turn around and leave at the gate after that warning.

John McNatt at Fisherman’s Wharf said offshore trips were cancelled due to weather, but had boats going out this week and weekend. North jetty anglers caught flounder, trout, black drum and redfish. Bay and jetty anglers were able to do all right, by all accounts. They caught redfish, trout, black drum, flounder and sheepshead.

12-21-23, 2009 South of Mansfield Jetties

There were some marine biologists there from UTPA taking some measurements and they told us it was a baby Sperm Whale. We took some pics and continued north to within site of the Mansfield jetties where the first wade gut is about six feet deep. The conditions were the best I've yet seen. We got some bait rods in the water then I yakked out six baits, two in the second gut, one with whiting and one with ray, Two just over the third bar and two long ones about 500 yards. Now we concentrated on catching some fresh bait. Got a couple whitings then started catching some nice Pompano. We ended up with about a dozen nice ones and a couple smaller ones and I finally talked Sandy into letting me use one of the smaller ones for bait And I thought oh boy its on now. Yakked a whole one out on the 80W about 450 yards. and one in the second gut on the 12ft AR. We sat watching in anticipation as the sun set. We had great bait and wonderful conditions and sat there until about 9:30 without a run. Sandy was getting cold so I reluctantly cranked everything in and we left.

The next morning we went back to the same spot to try again. Yakked out a couple Pompano heads and a whole whiting then put out the bait rods. The whiting bite was really hot and Sandy was having a lot of fun catching them. Rhea ( my golden Retriever) loves to take them to the cooler after you land them and seems to know when you have one on the line, runs over to you wagging her tail and waits for you to throw the fish down so she can take to the truck. Just before dark Sandy's bait rod doubled over and the fight was on she fought this fish for about 10 minutes and we saw it in the wash, A big Redfish. It was getting real close to one of the shark line After this episode we quit fishing for bait because we had about 20 big whiting and I didn't want to clean any more of them. We still never got a run on any of the shark rods but had a blast anyway and caught a lot of good dinners. Will try again as soon as the upcoming cold front passes. Till next time..............................Wayne. s and she grabbed the spool to try and turn it and the line popped. She was heartbroken.

The weather was GREAT.
We had our hooks in the surf around 7:30 am. We started at the 17 mm, clear water, flat condition but temp was cold until around 10 am and no grass. After 5 min the whiting were hitting.
Move to the 22 mm, the same whiting move onto the 31 nothing but whiting and then the 10mm whiting.
Everyone we talked to said: "Whiting"
The driving was rough in certain areas, 15-30. Ruts were very depth because of the trash trucks traffic Sat and Sunday due to the beach clean up, thanks Billy for you'll doing a good clean up.
Was a great day to be out.

Last week - Whiting. This week - Whiting. C'mon 70deg surf temps.

The south jetty is covered with Spanish mackerel. Trout require a little more work, but they are out there. I haven't seen to many reds, but I haven't been on the flats. I'm going looking for snook in the morning. Hopefully I'll have pictures.

4-21-10

Heard some reports of folks slaying smacks at the pier yesterday and having perfect conditions so decided to sneak out of work early and see for myself. Glad I did! Stopped n loaded up on some live shrimp and hit the pier around 1245 this afternoon. Guess everybody else heard about the smacks as well cause it was packed. Out of the 5 normal spots that I occupy, all 5 were taken so I sucked it up and set up close to the T.

Water was beautiful! Been a loooooooonnnnnngggg time since I've seen it that clear. Truly amazing of all the life below the shallows when its visible. Bait everywhere. People still slaying the smacks with some pomps mixed in. Saw one King caught off the right side of the T. Noticed they were slide-lining. With polarized shades I could see the smacks slowly circle my bobber and in an instance they darted off either nipping it right below the little treble or spitting the hook. It was a blast! Caught and released 8 smacks between 20-24". Lost well over a dozen! They were all solid size. Started off with 60#mono test leader and that didn't last long at all so had to adapt. Saw rays, turtles, jellies, numerous types of bait fish that I am unfamiliar with. Awesome day. The icing on the cake came from being out there with my Wife and our 2mth old daughter. She's my everything. Bought a little pop up tent for her and tried it out for the first time and I highly recommend it. Momma can even crawl in there if need be and have the privacy to feed on demand!

5-27-10

Nicole Buitron at Horace Caldwell Pier said rough water and high winds have limited fishing from the pier, but those braving the wind have been reeling in “bunches of black tip shark.” It’s been a good week for fishing even though winds were high. Fish caught this week were plentiful and large. Offshore trips brought back lots of blackfin tuna, giant amberjack, kingfish weighing between 50 and 100-pounds each, big wahoo, ling, vermilion, lane and dog snapper, shark and a Warsaw grouper topping the scales at more than 100-pounds

9-29-10

The Pomps aren't the giant ones yet. They are the good eaten one though...Use fresh shrimp and cast as far as you can!!!! I caught ONE Pomp today, and I fished from the 5 mile sign all the way down to the 40's today...I DID catch about a bazillion skipjacks and bluefish.

The one pomp I caught was on a LIVE shrimp...anything with fresh dead resulted in HARDHEADS.

The wife and I went to PINS yesterday...we settled about the 14 or 15 mile mark. Fishing was slow until I got a couple of casts WAY out into the deep green water...peeled shrimp+pink fishbite= BIG FAT POMPANO. I got back out again, and we managed to box 4 nice pomps...while that might not sound like a LOT...these were the 4 biggest pomps I've ever caught...easily from tip to tail they were easily 20" long.

I rigged up my HDX and with a double drop rig, brought in a big fat pomp and a big whiting for my first double.

10-4-10 Only small pomps so far. Should be soon

10-6-10

i havn't fished it in a few days but took the dog for a few walks and it looks decent. surf isn't too bad and i saw some people catching drum pomps and whiting over the last week and of course it looks like sharkathon was a success this past weekend.

10-4-10 PINS

My wife and I hit the beach just as the sun was coming up and stopped around the 16MM. The water was clear, little weed, and mullet was running in the first gut. Moved down to the 18 MM for the remainder of the day. Ended up catching 2 large pomps, a small black drum, 17" speck, 27" smack, and a bunch of whiting. The trout was caught on fresh cut mullet. The smack on a distressed finger mullet, and the others on shrimp and fish bites. My back gave out after lunch and we headed home at 1:30. Beautiful day to be at the beach.

10-13-15, 2010

I headed down from Austin on the 13th and arrived at Bob Hall around 4pm. The fishing started slow with only one pup shark and a few whitting btw 4pm and 9pm. Around 9pm i started talking with some guys who seemed to have the trout fishing down with live shrimp and poping corks. They offered to show me how they were doing it and even shared their shrimp. After that it was on. I caugth 4 keeper trout all btw 16" and 20" and many more undersized. Many thanks to Alex and his younger brother for hooking me up. I selpt for about 2hrs and once the sun started coming out i was back at it. The morning and afternoon would only yeild more whitting and 1 pompano. But once the sun started coming down the reds would show up. Around 6pm i caught my first red of the trip. I would measure right at 28'. A few other people caught reds that were next to me. All the reds were caught on live mullet. The reds would eventually show up again around 3 AM till the sun came out. Once the sun came out the bite died. For the evening and the night I caught 3 slot reds. And lost 2 reds. My buddy caught 2 more slot reds. So all together we caught a total of 5 reds, 4 specks, 1 sand trout, 1 pompano, and numerous whitting. October fishing down on the coast is about as good as it gets. Here are a few pics from the trip. Enjoy

10-14-10

Beverly Fintel from Horace Caldwell Pier reported redfish, Spanish mackerel, drum and trout have been caught from the pier, at least half way to the end. Anglers have been using frozen shrimp and mullet for bait this week.

10-16-10

I was also out on the north sticks, near the entrance yesterday (Sat Oct 16th 2010) in my green Tacoma. I caught 20 keeper whiting and 3 dink pomps. For a while every cast was returning a double. For bait I was using shrimp bites with shelled HEB shrimp. (the bait stand shrimp all seem to suck and be 1/2 rotten...and HEB is cheaper). Water was completely clear with very little wave activity at all. Skipjacks were not that thick. I caught 3 and kept one for bait. It was simply a beautiful day to fish and now I ran restock my now-empty freezer.

10-15-17, 2010 PINS

The 16th was amazing. One person had a huge cooler full of Pomps. Ok, so I dont hardly post fishing reports but I'm going to try to post the pics from this weekend in the next day or so. I fished PINS on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but went home each night. The pompano bite was wide open and was the reason I went. My favorite inshore fish to eat. I caught 16 BIG pompano Friday with my old man. Two went right at 22 inches. Saturday I caught 14 by myself along with a 25 inch red and a big smack til I met up with my Aunt for some beer drinkin and they had a huge cooler full of pompano. Sunday the bite was slow and only caught four. Me and THE_BLUFF_RAT got a late start and saw my dad heading off PINS so we grabbed the yak and headed down to the 18 or so. Went out late for a little drift fishing adventure but didn't bring my king rod so I of course broke off the first and only king I hooked up with. A gorgeous weekend, I'll be out there again Wednesday to see if I can't get some more meat. God Bless.

10-18-10 probably 18th reported on 19th at 1 pm upon inquiry at 8 am what was being caught at BH. lots of redfish on live finger mullet, live or dead. Spansh macks all day long, small sharks, pomps on fish bites, still catching a few kings on slides.

10-21-10

Earlene Henson from Horace Caldwell Pier reported Spanish mackerel have been hitting pretty strong this week. Anglers have been pulling in quite a few using live shrimp about halfway down the pier. Anglers also have caught small blacktip shark using live mullet and drum on frozen mullet from the end of the pier. Sharon Keehlisen at Woody’s Sports Center reported lots of large red snapper were caught over the weekend. In fact, she said she saw the biggest one she has ever seen, a 25-pounder. Other fish caught offshore have been barracuda, kingfish and amberjack. Bay guides have brought back limits of drum from around the lighthouse shoreline and limits of redfish from out in the flats. Pompano and shark have been reeled in by those fishing in the surf and gafftop by those on the piers.

10-24-10 approx. tw weeks ago from 11-6

A couple of weeks ago, I absolutely SLAYED the pomps using the following technique.

10-28-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported lots of bull reds have been caught this week on fresh mullet from the pier. Also caught have been a few Spanish mackerel, gafftop and two big drum. From the jetties, reports of redfish and Spanish mackerel catches have come in.

11-4-10

Anglers fishing the piers have caught sand trout and gafftop this week. No report Caldwell

11-4-7, 2010

11-6 was great PINS

Well, we headed out at 4:00 a.m. on the 4th and hit the beach by 7:30. Driving the first 18 was about as smooth as I have ever seen it. I found it particularly ironic that the beach was smoother than the park road…. go figure.

We were determined to hit 25.5 and the big dune…and we paid a dear price, with the driving from 18 to 22 just about jarring our teeth loose. That part of the drive was about as bad as I have ever seen it. Tide was JUST high enough that we either had to run the shell bank, or swallow our pride, sit on the pillow and plow the high road. We chose the latter.

By about 9, we found camp. And 40 mph winds. And a surf that looked like a hot tub in high performance mode. The rangers came by and thought we had to be up to something-- because NO ONE would fish in that weather. After showing our licenses and getting a little recon on who else was on the beach, the rangers left us to our suffering. Still, we managed two reds and a nice black drum for our efforts. Then it was time to set up camp. Yes, that was us on the beach with the GP Medium (16x32) and M1948 mess tent (17x12 with a 12.5 foot big stack). If you're going to do it, look good.

Fishing Friday was slow, with a few more reds and some pomps for the day's effort, but the food was ridiculous. Breakfast was marinated rib eyes, eggs, and jalapeno smoked bacon (Towboat Trash and his buddy stopped by for some left overs). I won't tell you about dinner. It'd just make you jealous.

Saturday. Oh my goodness, Saturday. Saturday was my best day on the beach ever. I have never seen so many red fish, black drum… I even caught a 18" gafftop out of the surf. The end totals for the trip: 35 red fish (yes, you read that correctly), 3 black drum, 3 pompano, and about 6 dozen whiting…and a gafftop. We ended with five bull reds, all coming in at 35 inches or more, with the biggest a whopping 41.5 inches. Took almost all of our tags to keep em.

11-8-10

Bunch of pomps.

11-11-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported a few bull redfish were hooked from the pier early in the week as well as a sheepshead and a few drum. A couple of anglers fishing the surf reported catching a few sand trout and whiting. Folks fishing from the jetties have been catching redfish. Bay anglers are still finding redfish at the end of their lines and trout are beginning to make their appearance. Also caught in the bays are drum, Spanish mackerel and flounder. Fishermen on the jetties also are catching redfish and some gafftop. Duane Foster at Woody’s Sports Center reported redfish are still being caught in the flats and the bays. Gafftop have been bagged from along the jetties, and some Spanish mackerel have been hooked mostly in the flats. Anglers on the piers have been catching small shark this week. No offshore boat has left his dock in the past week.

11-12-14, 2010

The next morning Bob would strike first with a slot drum on shrimp and Fishbites. I was longcasting with my Breakaway HDX trying to get into pompano. All I could manage was whiting after whiting after whiting. Good job Bob....luck is on your side this morning. I put the perculator on the fire because I needed some coffee. We still had some good ambers from the night before. Just enough to boil some water. Got tired of catching whiting.

11-18-10

Folks fishing from the jetties have bagged speckled trout and limits of redfish, and from the pier, large gafftop

11-19-10

Jetty or hit the surf.....Bluefish and Pompano in the surf on Mustang Island right now. Caught some Pompano this evening. For the Pomps use fishbites/shrimp and the Blues are hitting mullett so I have been told..

11-25-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers casting from the pier have reported catching some nice sized trout on mullet and squid. Also caught this week were pompano from a little more than halfway to the end of the pier and a few redfish.

11-27-10

hen at about 9:00am we landed the biggest fish we've seen:

a 43" red that made 4 or 5 screaming runs for deep water. This time we had learned our lesson amd netted him in the wade gut.
We were going to tag him and keep him but then we realized he was too big for our biggest cooler. And being just the second fish of the day we thought we'd catch plenty more smaller ones. No such luck. Just 2 hardheads and 3 whiting until we headed off the beach.
Also fished Bob Hall pier that night but only caught two small perch. The pier was almost empty and no one seemed to be having any luck.
Will post pics as soon as theyre emailed to me.

11-27-10 Huge pomps. Got up and headed to PINS with Mrs. Bighead and a pal...wasn't expecting much...certainly wasn't expecting what I caught.

We parked directly in front of the 10 MM sign, and set out long rods...dirty water, no seaweed...LOTS of man-o-wars...first fish of the day...a scrawny pompano...second fish of the day about 30 minutes later...a nice black drum...about 22" long. Hit a long dry spell, and then boxed my largest pompano ever...not sure how big yet (will measure later)...but I know I've never seen one this big...and this started a mini-blitz...in the next 30 minutes, I caught 4 more fat football sized pompano.

12-2-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported the pier has been desolate this week due to bad weather and the holiday. They were catching good size pomps around NPJ today hope this helps a bit

12-2-10

I could have boxed 60 pomps yesterday. It was en fuego.

However I only kept a personal limit of 10 pomps.

As decided by the great members of Breakaway.

12-2-10 Towboat Trash

I love this time of year, the cooler weather, the great fishing, the abundance of bait, you name it. Even though it really sucks that I can't make up for my lack of a love life by hanging out at JP Luby looking at bikinis all day, I try to make up for it by catching some great fish with even greater people. I fished with Tightlines on Thursday, and we caught somewhere around 15 pomps in a few hours, some reds, and a few black drum. Yesterday I went fishing with a great friend and mentor of mine, TEAM BUDDHAHEAD. Besides being one of my favorite folks to fish with, he has no problem with fishing hard all day and then bs'ing around later. Which believe it or not, when I'm fishing, I'm the same way for the most part. Other than pulling out the Torpedo megaphone and doing the Torpedo Chewbaca noise once yesterday afternoon, we fished hard and misbehaved later. Gary will have his version of the report up soon, but I just couldn't resist putting my own up, since I had such a good time.

12-3-10 Towboat Trash

I got hard at it putting out some pomp gear, and chose to make a meathaul rather than chase the jacks as was the orginal plan. Later in the morning about 9 Buddha showed up and we got after it at about the 21. The fish started coming left and right. No pictures of me yet, we were just fishing too hard, the pomps were there once again, and THICK. If it wasn't nailed down, they were nailing it. Sorry for the lack of more pics, Gary has got the rest and will post later on.

And at the end of the day the tally was 44 pomps, 2 slot reds, one oversize, and I forget how many but a few black drum that Gary caught.

12-4-10

Some big whting, 20-24” smacks and a blue and a few pomps, mp 35

12-9-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported very few anglers have been out on the pier this week. He said a couple fishing from the pier on Monday caught some small whiting.

12-16-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported no activity from the pier this week. He said, “There just aren’t many people fishing right now.” Sandra Fudge at Woody’s Sports Center said no offshore boats left the dock this week, but anglers fishing in the flats caught redfish and a few drum. Sheepshead have been reeled in by fishermen on the jetties and quite a few flounder have been gigged along the bulkheads. Anglers fishing in the surf bagged speckled trout and redfish.

12-17-19, 2010

12-21-10 Lots of Pompano PINS

12-22-10

Well We're back. There wasn't anything but sheephead on the north jetty at Port Aransas. I hate cleaning them unless they're over 19-20 inches so we didn't keep any. So we left, met a friend and his wife, went down on the beach, found a hole, and ended up with 8 reds, 19 pompano, and 22 big whiting. This trip must have been 18-21?

12-23-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier reported anglers dropping their lines near the end of the pier have been reeling in whiting and redfish using live mullet as bait.

12-30-10

Chad Cryer from Horace Caldwell Pier said a few catches of whiting, perch and redfish on the limited days the pier was open during the holidays. Bay fishing continues to be outstanding for anglers casting with mostly live and fresh dead shrimp. The catches have been so plentiful that MaryAnn Heimann at Offshore Adventures said one fisherman told her he feels guilty catching the fish. Bay anglers have reeled in lots of sheepshead, flounder, redfish, drum and speckled trout from aboard bay boats as well as from land. Offshore catches have included kingfish, dorado, grouper, vermilion snapper and barracuda. Also caught were two big blacktip sharks, a 6-foot, 7-inch, 130-pounder and a 7-foot, 2-inch, 168- pounder. Anglers headed to the north jetty returned with sheepshead and redfish. From the pier, fishermen have pulled up a few whiting, perch and redfish.

12-31-10

Hit the sand on Mustang looking for that Bull. Short story,Big Waves, small Pomps,Big Whitings and some Sandies. Had a great time spending the last day of the year on the beach fishing.

1-7-11

Hello. We all met at Pomp Fest 2011 site North of Fish Pass Jetties @ 0700-1100....totally dead until 1230... Then the bite was on until 1700...we used fishy bites - dead shrimps. We would wade out to the second sandbar and cast straight out... We caught around 20 pomps between 7 fishermen....We also caught about 60 Whiting up to 16 inches......it was a super time with great friends..

1-8-11

Hit the beach about 7:30. Tons of weed everywhere and driving was a bit bumpy the whole way. I ended up dropping lines in at about the 6.5 and didn't have much weed problems until 10:30 when the winds kicked up. At that point it was solid weed so I picked up. Ended up with a mess of whiting and a couple reds (released).

1-19-11 south of bob hall

Hello this is Todd from Ontario. Just wanted to thank you Surfdragon for the shrimp. It got crazy out there not long after you left us. The Whiting where biting so fast I couldn't even set any rods out. With that much stuff happening we lost plenty of shrimp and yours came in handy. We got about 30 big ones and 10 or so smaller ones and my wife caught a Flounder, never even thought about catching one of those there today. All and all a awesome day at the beach. Thanks for stopping in and taking those photos. It also gave me reason to stop lurking here and post a reply at least. Ill try to post something tomorrow. Maybe will get a photo of all the fish.

1-20-11

Sandra Fudge from Woody’s Sports Center said bay guides have been bringing back redfish. Anglers fishing around the Fena docks have caught sheepshead, sand trout and a few whiting. Sheepshead also have been caught from along the south jetty.

1-22-11

A beautiful day so Mary and I decided to go to the beach. Conditions were perfect. Only caught 4 whiting on shrimp/fishbites. Also used mullet, squid and cut bait to no avail. sbh

2-3-11

Limits of sheepshead and some trout have been reeled in from along the north jetty.

2-6-11

Decided to make a run out this afternoon to take a look around. Had no intention of fishing but did bring one rod and some fishbites. Driving was smooth and the water was chocolate milk well past the third bar. Fished for about 15 minutes and got some whiting before packing up. If your a whiting fisherman there's plenty of them out there right now. Afterward I stopped by bob hall to take a look at construction. Reply: Chocolate milk! Bummer. Was going to try it tomorrow. Am not a whiting guy unless I have my grandkids with me.

2-10-11

Sandra Fudge from Woody’s Sports Center said bay guides are bagging redfish and drum while those fishing off the south jetty are reeling in redfish and sheepshead. Anglers casting into the surf have reported nice catches of whiting. Sand trout have been bagged by those using dead shrimp on the Island Queen.

2-12-11

Went out today and threw everything but the kitchen sink at them. Started at the 15 and worked my way north finally landing on some fish around the 7. Mullet, crab, and whiting all went untouched with the winner of the day being plain ol shrimp. Found black drum in the first gut mixed in with whiting. Just one of those days where you had to weed through the whiting and would eventually pick up a black.

2-13-11

And finally me catching...nothing. Faked this pic. Actually I caught a bazillion whiting and not even a sniff on the other pole. Weather and water was gorgeous and spending the day with my wife even better.sbh

2-13-11 Whiting and Reds PINS Breakaway

2-17-11

Fudge from Woody’s Sports Center said folks fishing the south jetty have bagged sheepshead, and anglers casting into the surf continue to pull in whiting and also some redfish. Bay guides have reported drum and redfish catches, and those fishing on the Island Queen have reeled in sheepshead, sandtrout and croacker.
2-19-11

Beach Beach Beach!! The whiting bite is on right now and there is nothing safer or more fun. Just have him cast past the first set of breakers in the wade gut and he will catch as many whiting as you can take off the hook.

2-18-21, 2011

Well, we did our February trip over President's Day weekend. Hit the beach early Friday morning at low tide and made it down to the mid-twenties. Had the GP Medium and M1948 mess tent more or less set up by noon, with rods in the water. Friday and Saturday provided nothing but whiting (dozens of them...many 15+ inches) and a stray Pomp here and there.

As with all our trips there are two highlights: the fish.... and the FOOD. Saturday morning we had rib eye's with jalepeno bacon, eggs and tortillas. Saturday evening was rabbit stew. Sunday morning we had fresh, fried corn tortillas with eggs, onion and yes, cream cheese (holy cow was it good). And so on... and so forth....

The bite on Sunday hit in a span of about an hour in the afternoon. Nick stopped by and handed off his shrimp. I swear he made the offer just to show us what he had in his box (full of black drum, pomps and a couple reds). He swore it was "just the bait...."

Turns out, he may have been right. My next four casts-- in the span of about 20 minutes-- landed three reds (23, 25 and 25), and a nice black drum (23). It was so crazy that while I was gutting and gilling the first two reds (hands slimy and bloody), my rod went off again... and my son reeled in his first red (the 23).

All in all, was a great trip. The surf was fairly clear Friday and Saturday, and murky Sunday and Monday. No weed at all. And plenty of fish to be had-- we went home with two ice chests full of black drum, whiting, reds, pomps and even a couple golden croaker.

2-19-11

Mary and I went down to the 19 today. Water was ugly until about the 12 and then was great. Fished with shrimp, frozen mullet and cut whiting, and only a few whiting to show for it. A couple was fishing about 50 yds from us and were using ghost shrimp. He would walk to the first bar, cast out, and before he would make it back to shore he would have a bite. He and his wife had over a limit of nice reds, they kept only their limit, and 1 pomp. Another group of guys, who deployed 10 rods about 50 yds to the other side of them also caught nothing. I guess ghost shrimp were the food of choice today.

2-19-20, 2011

Sun. Nick and Rob each get slot reds and Im still being stubborn with only big baits out. The 80w has been out all night with a big chunk of ray and the 50w with whole whiting but no pickups. We have to head home around 11am but it was fun while it lasted. Weekend total= 6 slot reds, 1 bull red (released), 1 shark (released), 1 black drum, 2 stingray, 1 pompono, lots of whiting and countless fun and memories with good friends.

2-23-24, 2011

Camped at Mustang Island State Park Wednesday & Thursday, fished the surf Wednesday afternoon. Caught a bunch of Whiting, weed was tolerable, Thursday morning was impossible. Two cast and packed it up.

Real disappointing.

2-24-11

North and south jetty anglers have been going home with redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead and some flounder on their stringers.

Whiting and redfish continue to be caught in the surf, and speckled trout and redfish have been biting along Charlie’s Pasture shoreline.

2-26-11

Took a short trip out to PINS yesterday with my cousin who has never really fished. Thought i'd put him on some whiting with hopes of the occasional drum. Two minutes in he pulls in a nice keeper black and the day kept rolling. Ended up with two nice reds, two blacks, and about 30 or so whiting with a couple hardhead/pomps mixed in. All the fish except for one red came off shrimp/fishbites combo. Overall an awesome day on the water. Sweet and thanks for the report. Looks like the weed is coming in from Bob Hall north to Port A.

2-26-11

Mary and I decided to go to PINS for some R & R. Driving was rough. Had to drive up by the dunes most of the way. Most of the trip was 10-15 mph. That being said we had a great day. Pulling in one of many whiting. Kokopelli had sushi again. Here is one of the 2 reds and 2 pomps caught. We were planning on going to the 20 but stopped at the 10 and 15. Also caught the customary whiting. About 3PM water got rougher and the hardheads started biting so it was time to start heading back. Loaded up and ready for the return trip.

2-27-11

h its south of bob hall too. Already hard to fish

3-2-11

A buddy of mine and I made the most of the great weather and took some time off to head to PINS yesterday.

Right off the bat, we were a bit nervous as there was a lot of seaweed built up when we entered the park. Despite the warning of poor driving...it was pretty easy until we got to the high banks, then pretty easy south of there. As we got further south, the seaweed cleared up, and was a non-issue. The water was GORGEOUS.

We got to about the 38 about 7:45 AM, and on my very first cast, I caught a Pompano on the tried and true shrimp and fish bite combo. Shortly after I caught that, my friend Mike caught a nice 25" slot red.

What happened next is something I can only say I've read about...a full on redfish BLITZ. I caught a limit of 3 slot reds between 22 and 25" long in about 20 minutes. As soon as the bait would settle, BANG, fish on.

The fishing slowed down a bit, mostly whiting and what not, so about noon, we sat down and were discussing where we wanted to eat afterwards...our two choices are always "The Chicken Shack" or Whataburger on NPI...about that time, my rod with the whiting went off, and I asked Mike if he wanted to take it, he told me to get it.

Mary Ann Heimann at Offshore Adventures said that with the weather being so nice, lots of folks have been out fishing. She also said the water is warming and the fish are biting.

Offshore trips this week have returned to the docks with plenty of blackfin tuna, amberjack, grouper, kingfish, vermilion snapper, ling, shark and African pompano. Bay anglers continue to reel in redfish, speckled trout, drum and sheepshead, while those on the jetties have hooked sheepshead and redfish.

3-3-11

Beautiful out this morning decided to hit the surf. Got to the beach and a lot of people were already there. Water was nice, managed to catch a bunch of whiting for the smoker. Caught a nice pomp and on my pomp rig using a number 2 hook I caught a 38 3/4 in redfish. He straightened out that hook pretty good.

3-3-11

Dang Rabbit, I should've joined you on SBH rather than going to PINS. Sagassum was thick on the beach AND in the water from the asphalt's end past mm 16where we stopped and fished. Caught our weight in whiting and kept some larger ones for dinner.
At the 10mm, we saw the longest and widest weed line I've EVER seen on the beach! We saw that it had drifted south to the 13mm on our way off the beach. All in all, still had a great time and certainly beats any day at work!

3-10-11

Those casting into the surf have been pulling in redfish and sand trout.

3-13-11

Made a quick trip today out to PINS this morning and was met with tough driving and tons of weed. The driving was rough from the beginning of the beach and Spring Breakers were plentiful. The crowds died down after around the 4mm and driving was actually a little better after the 4wd sign. Fished at the 9mm with shrimp and fishbites and picked up a couple whiting and a TON of weed. Not being in the mood to play with the weed all day I packed up after about an hour and went on my merry way.

3-13-14, 2011

fished BHP Sunday and mostly whiting. Fished yesterday and caught 3 bonnet heads, 2 pompano and another mess of whiting. Wind picked up today and water is really rough haven't been out to the pier at all today. weather looks much better for tomorrow

3-14-11

i know spring break has started but we have been at home now since november and we need to get out lol. i have been watching the wind and all so now i have a question on which is better for fishing at bob hall pier, is the wind from the southeast better or out of the north or northeast. hopefully the natives wont be too restless if we come fishing this wednesday. any idea of what is being caught at the pier

Southeast any day for me mainly due to the likelihood of good water clarity though others opinions and mileage may vary.

3-16-11

after spending a cold winter at home, the weather finally co-operated for us to get out for the day. we made it to corpus about 10 am and went to bob hall. the water was beautiful and clear hardly any wind. we fished til about 5. we caught some whiting hubby caught about a 50 pound sting ray and saw many others doing the same. saw whiting, pompano, one spanish mackeral, several sharks usually the bonnet head ones. cannot wait to come back again. it was more about getting out and enjoying the nice weather than fishing. will be back in your beautiful city soon. would like to come twice a week but with the gas prices may have to cut it down. just rebuilt our home from hurricane ike so moving is out for a bit. trying to figure a way to rent for 6 months a yr and still be close to kids lol.

3-17-11

Sharon Keehlisen from Woody’s Sports Center said bay guides have reported catches of redfish, drum, speckled trout and flounder. Folks casting into the surf have reeled in drum and pompano. Those on the piers have bagged large gafftop and sandtrout. Sheepshead have been the main catch aboard the Island Queen.

3-18-11

We set up about 29 or so at roughlly 8:45 AM. The seaweed was there, but manageable...even for long rods. A few whiting were landed quickly for cut bait, and my buddy Atwell landed the first of two of his nice slot reds as seen here: As the day wore on, the seaweed became completely unmanageable...finally about 2:30 PM we packed it in and headed to the house....where we ended up frying some fresh caught redfish with our friends and drinking some ice cold beer to cap off the day.

3-18-11

Went to the sticks on northern PINS.

Took a whole mess of family members out there, and the conditions weren't too bad except for the weed. The driving was actually good, except for the pot-hole my in-laws drove into.

Took the long rods, and we started to fish, but the weed was bad!!!!

My in-laws gave up on fishing and just hung out.

Not me, I was gonna catch a keeper (not a whiting)

Hammered thru several tons of weed, three broken lines due to the weed, and lost several fish due to weed and just not paying attention.

Managed to get this guy and it felt like a monster reeling it in and the spare tire size ball of weed.

3-24-11

Bay and channel catches have included lots of sheepshead, redfish (many oversized), flounder and some speckled trout. Flounder also have been hooked around Ingleside, and whiting from in the surf.

3-26-11

Took the dog for a five mile walk at Malaquite. Lots of Sargassum in the water. Saw one winter Texan come down to try his luck fishing. I was going to tell my wife that I bet that guy won't be there when we get back and five minutes later I turned around and he was already gone having given up.

3-31-11

Sharon Keehlisen from Woody’s Sports Center said redfish have been hitting hard on live shrimp and live mullet, and drum have been taking sea lice and crabs. Limits of sheepshead have been bagged from the south jetty on live and dead shrimp. Pompano have been caught in the surf, and gafftop and sand trout off the piers. Offshore catches include state water red snapper, ling and kingfish.

4-7-11

Jeff Miller at Horace Caldwell Pier reported folks fishing near the midpoint of the pier have been limiting out on slot redfish, while those fishing off the end have caught oversize red and Spanish mackerel on dead shrimp. Also caught this week have been some speckled trout from in the bay, whiting and shark from in the surf, Spanish makerel from the pier and sheepshead from areas near structures.

4-13-11

I've read on some of the usual websites over the last several days of the driving on PINS being really bad and the weed is really thick. A couple of spinners caught along with some pomps/whiting. I also read of rangers cracking down on campfires as well.

4-14-11

Jeff Miller at Horace Caldwell Pier reported fantastic fishing all day Sunday as anglers pulled in limits of nice size redfish. He said they were all keepers, measuring right at 25 inches. Fishing has been best about halfway to threequarters of the way down the pier, past the seaweed that has been accumulating in the surf. Finger mullet and dead shrimp were what did the trick for catching all those redfish.

4-21-11

Jeff Miller at Horace Caldwell Pier reported an enormous ling was caught from the pier over the weekend, along with some redfish. He said windy conditions have kept some from dropping their lines.

4-21-11 6 am

The weed is stacked on the beach w/ new stuff coming in. Stopped by the north sticks and you could see a whole lot of weed rolling in the waves

4-22-11 4 pm

went today just because I had to. not even fishable, wind, weed, current horrible, a few small whiting and plenty of hardheads on shrimp. And WINDY is the 7 day forecast again

9-28-11

You've been doing well lately. We went 5 miles SBH about 6:30 and stayed till dark. Caught a 16 inch gafftop and several whiting throwing all sorts of plastics and fishbites. Reds still eluding us, but we will try again Saturday. Water wasn't too clear but sun was going down. Saw lots of baitfish that I don't think were mullet. All were 3 to 4 inches and in big schools jumping out of the water. Wider bodies than mullet and silver lookin.

10-5-11

My wife and I hit the beach just as the sun was rising and stop at a nice looking spot around the 8 MM. There was a lot of finger mullet in the water , but, they were out a little to far for my meager abilities with a cast net. Did manage to get about 10 to use in addition to the shrimp I bought as Cos Way. We caught 1 red at 22.5" and a lot of nice size whiting. The bite stopped and we moved down the beach stopping about 3 times on the way to 19 mm. Caught several more whiting that were small and a bunch of lady fish. Headed back home around 1:30. The driving was great, no soft spots where the 4x4 was needed. The water was very clear and the surf was 2 - 3 ft. This was our first beach trip in some time. The only regret is my sore back, but that's another story in itself.

10-7-8, 11

Fished North PINS Friday and Satury. Caught three reds- 23.5, 23, & 19. Kept the legal ones.

Caught two dozen Whiting , Croaker and Piggy perch. Very few mullet were seen in the surf.

Whole croaker and cut bait did not get a hit. All fish were caught on dead shrimp and Fishbites.

10-25-11

i took my new custom rod too bob hall for a few hours to try and hook its first fish.. i got skunked but figured i would post anyway... i got to the pier and guess what...i started coughing. no dead fish on the beach but some in the surf. There was not very much bait and it was dying quickly in live wells and on slides/floats. Only fish i saw caught were whiting, ladyfish, and some spanish macheral, and lots of pampano. i have some friends who have been on the pier for a few days they had 4 runs on yakked out shark baits that were not landed and another two that they did catch both around six foot a bull shark and lemon.they had big schools of bull red drum in the morning yesterday, and the kings have been around didn't see any today but i left early.. only 4 people on the pier when i left. i had some baits shredded and after about 30 minutes of launching a 2oz gotcha plug i got a huge take that broke it

10-25-11

try bob hall there were lots of them yesterday

10-30-11

Hadn't been down PINS since the turtle slow down in April. Got the idea when I saw how calm it was this morning to test drive my new tires and front bushings. Tried @ MP 22: couple of whiting. Tried @ MP 33: 4 more whiting, 3 small pomps, a 26" red, a 36" black drum, another red about the same length as the drum, and a break-off during a fight like the last. Tried one more time @ MP 36, but only a pair of hardheads. Went to MP 40 and turned around.

Bite as you can see was extremely slow. Targeting pomps, I used only shrimp & Fishn'Strips on 2/0 and 3/0 thin wire circle hooks, vainly hoping the big stuff would straighten the hooks so I wouldn't have to bring them in or break off. There were plenty of finger mullet in the wade gut.

10-30-11

saw tons of pampano at bob hall tonight the guys next to me left with almost 30 of them

10-31-11

Surf fished sunday in the morning and didnt catch anything so figured I would try it monday afternoon. Water was pretty, no redtide to speak of and no bait fish, pelicans were diving but way past the third bar. There was a few man o wars being washed up and some fresh sargasum not enough to bother the fishing. Caught whiting and small pomps and hardheads on fishbites and nothing on frozen mullet or cut whiting.

11-5-11

Drove straight to MP 33 where I did so well Sunday and found the hole occupied. Drove another mile south and managed only a croaker. Wound up just beyond the 35 marker. Could bareky get to the second gut throwing into 15 mph ESE wind, so I began fishing the far side of the first gut. Boxed 4 small pomps, 10 whiting, 1 bluefish, and 2 reds. All on Fishn'Strips & fresh dead shrimp purchased at Clem's. Billings hadn't any this Sunday or today..

11-5-11

They had a good king run Sat AM and a couple more though out the early afternoon. Saw 2 40+ bull reds brougt in.... one was the guy fishing 5 feet away from me . Lots of medium sized whiting.

Surf and wind picked up in the late afternoon and early evening when i left.

11-5-11

Woke up nice and early at 5:30 and starting again with cut whiting and fishbites. The whiting kept rolling in at various sizes but no takers on the cut bait. Searched up and down the beach for bait but couldn't find any. By the time I got back to camp the sun was coming up so I paddled out some whole whiting passed the third bar to find some shark. The surf was kinda rough at that time.

Nothing really happened for a while and paddled out another bait around 2 and the water was much rougher. Shortly after I started to really feel the effects of red tide and pulled camp around 6.

Spent the next morning at bob hall where the red tide wasn't bad past the second sand bar. Heard of and saw at least 3 bull reds taken. Later in the morning they guy next to me takes 3 pomps before I left. Saw a couple Spanish macs including a 19 incher I caught off frozen mullet. Left shortly after the mac so not sure how the rest of the day went.

11-7-11

fished bob hall a few times the last couple days its been really windy with hints of red tide and bait has been hard to come by. today the bull reds were running pretty good, but no takers on the slide line even though i had frisky bluefish on for hours

11-12-11

Made the run down pins this morning around 9am to take a look around and maybe get a line wet. No new signs of red tide apparent on the way down and very little aerosol effect. Picked up a nice red on my first cast on live finger mullet, then not much the hour after except for a few large whiting. Not wanting to keep fighting a losing battle against the weed, I packed up around 11 and headed home.

11-14-11 Smacks , Reds and Blues

11-14-11

Hit PINS last Monday. Excited to get a little fishing done after a week of retail madness. The person running the front gate warned me of the dangers of the red tide, kindly handed me an informative brochure on the effects of red tide and dogs (we did have our two fishing dogs with us). I explained that the dogs were on the water quite often, and we would make sure that they were leashed, and not eating rotting fish etc....

I asked the guard how the fishing was. His reply was " The guy who writes for Corpus Fishing.com said that it wasn't worth even trying. Not the greatest report, but after the drive, we decided to ignore the negative future predicion

We paid the 10 bucks, proceeded to an empty beach, and had a wonderful trip. Two large Black Drum, 2 slot reds, 3 giant Pompano, many whiting. I felt like showing the guard the full ice chest upon exiting the park, but headed home for some grilled fish !

You never know until you hit the beach. You never know until you wet a hook !

11-21-12

Went fishing from about 9:30 AM till about 12 noon. Caught a Blue about 20", many catfish, a whiting with only the head attached to the hook STILL ALIVE. Tons of Mullet in the surf. Caught 24 on the first cast. Most were larger than what I like to use. Fished about 3 miles South of BHP.

11-23-24, 2011

Well the kids were off of school for a week so I tried getting them on the beach as much as possible. Fished 23rd and 24th south of Bob Hall using cut and live mullet, cut whiting and cut blue fish. Caught tons of Bluefish, many whiting, a couple of Smacks, one slot red, a 39 in red, 44 1/2 in red and a 3 1/2' Bull on a short casted bait on my saltist (that was a hell of a fun fight btw.)

11-25-11

After my son and family left for NM, Mary wanted to go to the beach. I really balked at that idea. RIGHT!!! Sure beats the malls on BLACK Friday

Went to my HH SBH but weed was thick. Decided to drive south to find some cleaner water. The first place we found was at the PINS bollards, but there were too many people fishing there. Wound up a few miles down PINS.

Cast up some mullet and put out 2 rods. All I was catching were a bunch of BLUE fish. After about a dozen caught I cut one up and caught a 26" RED. Put another chunk on, as well as on my other rod, and caught this 40" red.

I then started catching WHITE-ing on the BLUES. Cut up the whiting and caught a 36" BLACKtip with it. I also got a 17" smack.

11-26-11 sbp

I fished three spots South of BHP. Water was clear no weed, some small Man of War washing in. Bait was plentiful. Caught two Bluefish and one large whiting early. by the time the sun was overhead there was mullet everywhere, knee deep to chest deep. tried everything. shrimp & fish bites, live mullet, cut mullet. I threw soft plastics and spoons. I finally ran out of beer, water, cokes and patience. It was an absolutely beautiful day

11-28-11

So after striking out in the surf this morning, I decided to try fish pass jetties this afternoon. Arrived at about 3 pm to see a nice couple from up north absolutely SLAYING pomps on a single hook rig with ghost shrimp. I proceed to tear some live shrimp in half on a surf rig and immediately hook up. Wouldn't you know the bite shuts off 10 minutes later. The nice couple take off around 4:30 with about 20 pomps and a mixed bag of sheepshead, whiting, trout. They killed it!

I stuck around and switched to my pomp jigs tipped with shrimp. It was nonstop from about 5-6 with a fish on every cast. Ended up taking 4 pomps home, landed too many nice whiting to count, 1 white trout, and a handful of bluefish, perch/snapper. Ohhh, I ended up getting bit by a dang bluefish for the first time ever removing a jig, them some sharp teeth!

11-25-11

Excellent weather Friday. Driving conditions easy at low tide. Middle/High road is soft around 7 and at 17 through low 20's. There are still a lot of dead fish in various stages of decay.

Awesome day on the beach with my Son even though the truck broke down on the 35... at night....at high tide...with a big storm coming... lol. We finally managed to limp off the beach around 930 and made it home to SA around midnight. You would think I would have some really good karma since I gave a fellow fisherman a fillet knife who forgot his. Maybe I used it up catching all these fish?? Ha ha.... Karma or not, we made it safely home and had another great day enjoying the beach and family.

There was plenty of bait and the Spanish were very thick. This old man's arms are sore today. Aww... the price we pay. ha ha. Also caught pompano whiting and blues

Hello all. The family and I went fishing/camping at fish pass Friday and Saturday. Me and Israel showed up with little Collin Friday afternoon. Set-up camp which it pretty cool because Israel has really awesome setup.

As soon as we where done went to fishing. The water was clear and green! I had not been able to fish the beach since last February so it was like heaven on earth!! The sound of the wind all around me, the sand between my toes, seeing my little man covered in sand, and the smell of salt in the air. What more could you ask for?

Salty Dog and Mrs. Salty Dog (aka Mom & Dad) arrived latter that afternoon with their new condo (aka truck camper). Israel fished well past dark with his head lamp a single orb of light floating on the beaches edge on a night with no real moon. Israel caught a descant black drum and a nice size pomp in between all the whiting and heard heads. Almost every time we reeled in there was a fish on. It was fun.

12-1-11

Believing a report the red tide had left inreasing numbers of fresh dead hardheads at least as far south as MP 10, I didn't use the pomp window I'd forecast. Then I got reports that the fish kill ENDED at the 10 and that they slayed the pomps yesterday, so I went to see for myself this morning. Sure enough, the dead fish stopped in Little Shell, although it was hard to stop coughing from the aerosol stirred up by a brisk south wind. Down around the northern 40s, where there were a lot of good points, the aerosol was pretty much gone.

Moved 4 times and boxed 2 pomps and 8 whiting, most of which were caught within minutes of each other just before noon. Also released 3 reds, 30", 34", and 40", and 1 brown pelican, which I didn't care to measure. Everything except the pelican on fresh peeled shrimp and Fish'nStrips. Plenty of finger mullet in the first gut, but I wanted pomps.

Water was clear, but a scattering of fresh sargassum made long rods a bit tough to use. Driving not too bad, just the usual ruts in Big Shell.

12-8-11

I told him they were Pompano and that they were great (understatement) eating. He told me he thought they were Jack Crevalles. So he runs back over to his gear and starts catching more and now keeping them. So I go back to fishing now not so much worried about what the other guys doing and more on catching these suckers. It was about 4:45 when I started and at about 5:30 when the light was starting to dim....it was as if someone decided to turn the feeding switch off for these guys. Caught 2 whiting in a row and then it just flat lined. Stuck around for a few more minutes with a chunk of whiting to see if there were any reds out there but nothing even touched it. It is amazes me every time to feel how much of a fight these guys put on for the size. Anyway...ended up with 17 Pomps with the biggest pushing around 17 inches.

12-9-11 911 am (8th night)

Fished BHP last night for a couple of hours with the boys. Trout were plentiful. Matt and Clem contributed the keeper trout. Matt hooked on to the pomps. John and I caught a bunch of fat undersized trout. All keepers were caught on live shrimp under a popping cork.

12-9-11

Caught 17 pomps and some whiting

12-15, 2011

Ok peeps. Broke computer. Red tide BAd alllll of pins. Had to come home. Peace.

12-23-2011

I'm mad there is still red tide!

12-27-11

Fished pins for a couple hours yesterday in search of pompano. The conditions were perfect, but the pomps never showed up. Managed a bunch of whiting and one big ugly. Didn't see any bait in the water or any signs of redtide.

12-28-11

boz and I followed Nick and Brenda down to the Port Mansfield jetties, making numerous stops to hunt for pomps. There was third vehicle in the caravan, but I don't know their names.

boz and I cleaned six 2-lb pomps, 28 whiting, and an 8-lb black drum. Nick gave us 2 of those whiting and one pomp. Five of the pomps, perhaps half the whiting, and the drum came from around MP 26. Everything caught on Fishn'Strips & peeled dead shrimp. When we left, we gave our fishing hole and shrimp to the folks in the third vehicle and left them fishing.

Water was flat and very slightly murky, with no weed and no finger mullet.

12-28-11 I did not have any bites until the winds shifted and started coming in off the water.

Here I am bringing in 1 of 18 whiting for the day. 2 pomps. Port aranasas. SBH.

12-29

Looked good on paper, but I ran the whole beach and got blanked on the pomps. It was a Big Daddy Kane sort of day. I did see a pretty nice white tail, for pins. Pictures could be better. I thought for sure he would turn around for the silhouette at the top of the dune, but he never did.

1-5-12

Jeff Miller from the Horace Caldwell Pier said the tide has been running “super low” and activity on the pier has been very quiet. He said “a bunch of whiting have been caught, but that has been about it for the week.” Besides trout, also caught in the bay and channel have been redfish, drum, sheepshead and whiting.

1-7-12

Wish this was a report with huge redfish and maneating sharks but it is not..LOL. Anyway, woke up yesterday morning and it was beautiful!! With all of the options, Neil and I decided to pack up the boys and head down the PINS. It was absolutely gorgeous out there and we had fresh mullet. We had a long talk on the way out to the beach and decided that we were not really mad at the fish today and decided to give them a break. Subsequently, only one hardhead was caught. It looked calm enough to get a bait off of the 1st bar, but after watching my 6'3" friend get a hello from the gulf down his waders i opted out of that one. A few people we spoke with had a few pomps and some whiting. Tide was high when we went, so driving was pretty rough especially in the twenty's. On the positive side, the beer was cold, it was a beautiful day, the boys had a blast, and it was definitely better than a good day at work

1-8-12

Nice report Paul. Mary and I stopped at the 8mm and the whiting were plentiful. Was even catching them in the wade gut. Got tired of dealing with them. Put both poles out with live mullet and didn't get a look. Came back with 2 pomps that I sauteed in butter and olive oil with almonds and fennel. Good dinner.

1-11-12

Art Singleton at Woody’s Sports Center said the sheepshead run is beginning to pick up. He indicated that although many of those caught have been undersize, more and more often anglers are reeling in keepers. He’s hopeful that by the end of the month, sheepshead will be plentiful.

Other fish making a showing in the bay and the channel are trout, flounder, whiting, redfish and drum.

Offshore catches have included grouper, shark, amberjack, kingfish, blackfin and yellowfin tuna, barracuda, vermilion and lane snapper and ling.

MaryAnn Heimann at Offshore Adventures said she’s seen some really nice speckled trout, flounder, drum, redfish and sheepshead at the dock this week. She said the fishing has been good.

Singleton from Woody’s Sports Center said bay guides have reported redfish, flounder, drum and sheepshead catches. In the channel, anglers have been reeling in sand trout, whiting and sheepshead.

Fish pass access road port A:

Got set up with a long rod w/ mullet that never got bit. Second rod was a double drop fishbite/shrimp combo and my favorite whiting rig a simple 1oz sinker on a slider w/ a small khale hook on 12Lb on a medium/light 7' rod. Pretty steady bite at 4 different spots. Long and short boxed 33 whiting and ran out of bait, so went home...nice day and even got some sun as it was a really nice day! Love SOTEX winters....

1-15-12

Went out to Bob Hall and the water was a little dingy and around 57 degrees. Caught a few whitting to take home to fry up for supper. People fishing the first gut with ghost shrimp were on the pomps and some nice one too. Saw some people we hadn't seen since last king season to catch up a little. Had a great time wetting lines but, it only added fuel to the fire of the King addiction.

1-18-22, 2012

So for now, I remain thankful for the continued healing from red tide in our fish population, for the ten thousand whiting I caught and released, and for rays, drum, sharks, and the like....heck, I'm glad for all of 'em! And before I forget, thanks for the stories there Captain B. Take care of our resources, eachother, and our sport. Until next time, best wishes and better fishing.

1-26-12

Jeff Miller Horace Caldwell Pier said anglers on Monday were catching quiet a few small sharks, speckled trout and drum. Over the weekend, a couple of pompano, drum and more sharks were pulled from the water.

1-27-12

A mile past BH around 7 am. Started out fishing the second gut with shrimp/fishbite combo and was only catching small whiting so moved in to the first gut and immediately landed a really nice sized Pompano. Moved all my rods in and ran out of shrimp and ended up with 7 nice whiting and 8 Pompano.

1-27-12

Had some cut bait in the freezer that I took as well as an assortment of lures. Water was too off colored for lures so I put a frozen mullet on one rod and "gulp" ghost shrimp on my pomp rig. Mary sent off shelling and on the first cast I get a small pomp. After that it was whiting after whiting after whiting. Hardly had a chance to sit down before I'd get another hook up. Nothing on my other rod so I cut a whiting and put a chunk on it. 30 min later, while I'm walking back from casting out my other rod, it bends over big time. I rush back and put pressure on it and wind up landing a 37.75" shark. While I'm getting it in I get a bite on my other rod. Another whiting. He is from “the bluff”. I think it was SBH.

2-2-12

Jeff Miller Horace Caldwell Pier said lots and lots of whiting have been caught from the pier over the past week. He said whiting are excellent in fish tacos, but you have to catch lots of them because they’re small. Art Singleton from Woody’s Sports Center said redfish catches in the bay have been really good. Folks fishing along the jetties also have had nice luck with catches of whiting, sand trout, sheepshead and an occasional redfish and state water red snapper. Dead shrimp, finger mullet and squid have been the bait of choice.
