Interview With Hitler, An

by George Sylvester Viereck

Read by J Kaye and C Roslin (1 Cd)

In July 1932, Hitler was immersed in electioneering. That month he spoke in 53 German towns and cities. The theme was monotonously, but successfully hammered home: the democratic parties had, during the past 13 years, presided over Germany's complete ruin; they were utterly incapable of bringing the fundamental change needed; only the Nazi party could bring about Germany's salvation. The interview presented here, published by Liberty magazine in July 1932, stands out from Hitler's election speeches that month in its content, style and rhetoric. It differs sharply too from the six interviews he gave to the foreign press prior to this.

Issues Of The Day

by Jeffrey Cohen

Read by Ruth Hill (1 Cd)

Rabbi Dr Jeffrey M Cohen's book is divided into thirteen parts. Each independent section contains examples of his sermon written between March 1986 and July 1999 when he was the congregational rabbi of Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue.

Part one is headed 'Ethical Moral Issues' and includes Rabbi Cohen's thoughts on newsworthy events e.g. the oldest profession, a Jewish view, the Clinton affair and the Bulgar case. Part three is entitled 'Women's Concerns' and covers his ideas concerning the chained wife and also womens' prayer groups. Part eight is called 'Tributes' and reminds us of the contemporary responses to the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, Mr Chaim Bermant and Dr Michael Weitzman. These three parts are examples of his breadth and interest in everyday happenings. This is a very readable book and enhances our understanding and appreciation of a modern orthodox point of view.

As the Guardian and Jewish Chronicle columnist, Jonathan Freedland was standing next to the mohel about to perform the bris on his new born son, Jacob. Jonathan questioned what he was letting his child in for, "exactly what am I giving my son?" he wondered. "What is this identity we will both share?" Thus starts a description of a fascinating journey into the meaning of being a Jew. Freedland searches for answers in the roots and branches of his family tree. His great uncle Nat, one of the few Jews serving in the British administration of pre-Israel Palestine, his great uncle Mick the columnist and anti-Zionist trade union leader in the East End and his mother Sara whose harsh life severely tests her religious devotion.
