Introduced by Council Member Bishop: RESOLUTION 2014-577 A RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING THE JACKSONVILLE AXEMEN ON THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY AND EXPRESSING THE CITY’s BEST WISHES TO THE TEAM AT THE 2014 USA RUGBY League National Championship Game on August 23, 2014; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen are a semi-professional rugby league team based in Jacksonville since 2006; and WHEREAS, 2014 is the ninth season for the Jacksonville Axemen and they will host the 2014 USA Rugby League National Championship Game on August 23, 2014 here in Jacksonville; and WHEREAS, since their inception, the Jacksonville Axemen have become one of the most successful rugby football clubs in the United States; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen advanced to the American National Rugby League playoffs in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and won the American National Rugby League 2010 Championship; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen currently play their home games at Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida (“UNF”), and have helped expose UNF internationally, as well as domestically, by playing and bringing special events to UNF; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen have played a vital role in the success of UNF’s own rugby program, as over 50 of the Axemen’s players have been UNF alumni; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen have been ambassadors to the world by hosting international teams, who train and play in events held in Jacksonville, such as the Australia Day Challenge in 2008, the Leeds Rhino vs. Salford Reds in 2009, and the Atlantic Cup games from 2009-2011; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen have been active in the community with charity work, such as visiting children in hospitals and by hosting nonprofits and publicizing the nonprofits during their games; and WHEREAS, the Jacksonville Axemen defeated the Central Florida Warriors on August 2, 2014 in the Southern Conference Championship game, and have secured their place in the National Championship game; now therefore BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville: Section 1. The City of Jacksonville hereby honors and commends the Jacksonville Axemen and their many supporters, and extends the City’s best wishes to the team at the USA Rugby League National Championship Game on August 23, 2014 here in Jacksonville, and wishes the team many more years of successful seasons. Section 2. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective without the Mayor's signature. Form Approved: /s/ Margaret M.
