Musicians-in-residence
Three musicians, three styles to be discovered.
They are tomorrow's jazz. Our three musicians-in-residence play on several stages and bring the new generation with them.
Cyrille Aimée
Thomas Enhco
Cory Henry
The Roman Theatre
A whole range of jazz styles
The Roman Theatre, the main stage of the festival, welcomes all the jazz stars for 16 memorable evenings.
It dedicates the first weekend to New Orleans, the cradle of jazz, for an unforgettable time at the source of jazz with emblematic musicians such as Allen Toussaint, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
The festival’s great and traditional thematic evenings highlight all jazz tendencies and welcome world music. After a special weekend dedicated to New Orleans, we propose an African evening with Salif Keita, Cheik Tidiane Seck and Amadou Bagayoko, a Gospel evening with The Golden Gate Quartet and Naomi Shelton, a Blues evening where the harmonica will come to the fore with Jean-Jacques Milteau, Eric Bibb and Greg Zlap, a Funk evening with The Family Stone and Maceo Parker and finally a French Touch evening and an All Night Jazz to close the festival with a flourish.
The stars will be at the Roman Theatre with Marcus Miller who will present a world creation grouping musicians from Africa and the National Orchestra of Lyon. Three Latin American magicians Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Chucho Valdés, meet up in Vienne for an anthological evening. Jazz legends such as Benny Golson, Chico Freeman, Avishai Cohen and George Benson are present… The programme also includes great musicians who, like Sting, acknowledge jazz as the source of their inspiration.
And we should not forget tomorrow's stars who represent the future of jazz. Led by three young musicians-in-residence, French-Dominican singer Cyrille Aimée, French pianist Thomas Enhco and American keyboard player Cory Henry, the new jazz generation is fully represented once again.
From legends to young musicians, world music to French jazz, the Roman Theatre programme is intended to be qualitative, magic and eclectic. For the 35th edition of Jazz à Vienne, once more you will enjoy intense and unforgettable moments.
We wish you an excellent 35th edition.

Midnight Club
“Jazz from here and abroad”
An inescapable festival stage, the Midnight Club presents all of today’s jazz whilst combining discovery with listening in an intimate atmosphere.
For 35 years the festival’s programme has been based on some mainstays that can be found in the artistic project of the Midnight Club: discoveries, encounters and mixed musical styles. This stage presents artists of the new jazz generation who proclaim themselves as fully in tune with their time, but whose references are deeply rooted in their heritage, a proof of true authenticity. Whilst they are proud of their references and look towards the future, they aim at innovating today's music with all the richness that they carry, convinced that they are contributing to tomorrow's music. To present all the richness of this music, this new programme is more than ever an invitation to travel the length and breadth of the world. This journey starts in the United States, the cradle of jazz, with the new sensation from Louisiana, cello player Leyla McCalla who replays the great classics of Haitian music. Taj Mahal's favourite delicately incorporates these standards in folk and blues. A true saxophone legend, Von Freeman's son, Chico Freeman, presents his new international quartet in a pure hard bop and groove spirit.
Groove will also be present through a novel meeting between three generations of organists: Rhoda Scott, queen of the Hammond organ, Cory Henry, Snarky Puppy's pianist, and Matthew Whitaker, the very young winner of the Apollo Amateur Nights. Also a winner of this prize, French-Dominican Cyrille Aimée is considered as the new great voice of jazz.
Our journey will then take us to Africa with Julia Sarr's voice that carries us away in the bubbles of a swaying and graceful Afro jazz, then to the Middle-East with the Egyptian oud player Mohamed Abozekry accompanied by his Heejaz band from Lyon. This prodigy’s music tells of both the East and West, with improvisations and Latin sonorities.
Between jazz and Latin music, cello players Ana Carla Maza and Vincent Segal, who play in a duo, impress by their ability to mix instrumental virtuosity and melodic richness. Sensitivity and musical richness are at the heart of this duet's compositions.
After two award-winning albums that were acclaimed by the critics, the GoGo Penguin are considered as the rising stars of the English scene. The jazz tinged with pop accents now has a new ambassador.
Our world tour ends in the company of the Laurent Coulondre Trio (ADAMI talent and Spedidam generation) and the best French blues musicians with the French Blues All Stars. We wish you a pleasant journey.

JazzMix
“From Bebop to Laptop”
For 8 years we have proposed concerts off the beaten track, special projects, novel encounters, previews and even "work in progress".
What a pleasure to meet again in the unique context of the Jazz Mix to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the festival! One must be aware that artists endanger themselves when unveiling other facets of their personality and that the Jazz Mix is a kind of laboratory where anything is possible. This year we will continue to explore our main theme inspired by Quincy Jones' spirit and career “From Bebop to Laptop”.
During these 10 days we will have the opportunity of welcoming two genuine legends of the history of jazz and related music. Joe Bataan, founder of the salsoul style in the 70's, a perfect mix of salsa and soul from NYC and Mister Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, the legendary drummer (over 3,000 recordings to his name!) of Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and James Brown! A draft outline of the new project of Yvinek, the former ONJ director, who proposes a novel collaboration between Artaud and Erik Truffaz, will also be presented. The samba diva from the Brazilian Nordeste, Fabiana Cozza, has accepted to enlighten a roda, a kind of communion where tables and chairs are used to incorporate percussion. This year, Africa will be very present with Aziz Samahoui's gnawa trance, a tribute to the South-African label "The Sun" sponsored by Abdullah Ibrahim during the apartheid and the Vaudou Game from Lyon who will evoke the Yoruba deities. The Contemporay Cabaret that "plays electronic music on acoustic instruments" and Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez who accepts to do a live performance with a painter prove to us that our jazzmen's creativity and curiosity are inexhaustible! We wish you a happy festival.

Cybèle’s gardens
“Today's and tomorrow's jazz…”
An inescapable place, Cybèle is at the heart of the festival.
Every day at 12.30 p.m., come and meet today's jazz and the new generation, the regional and national scene, musicians from the jazz Academy, music schools and conservatories, international university big bands and the winners of the RéZZo FOCAL Jazz à Vienne springboard.
Discover all the richness of the Rhône-Alpes scene with Trio Barolo, EYM trio, saxophonists Romain Cuoq and Michael Cherret, singers Anne Silla, Celia Kameni and Elsi Etna and also Jean Kapsa on solo piano. The Cybèle stage will offer a great day based on swing with the Glossy Sisters' vocal trio, Trio Tekke from Cyprus and Mood from the Ardèche. The Jazz à Vienne festival has always proposed thematic evenings with jazz related music. Cybèle’s gardens are no exception to the rule. Its programme echoes the Roman Theatre stage and will feature Sax Machine's funk-hip-hop, Vaudou Game's Afro Funk, Ezza's Tuareg blues rock, and Garrafa's Brazilian inspirations. The programme of this 35th edition will also include the Academy's contributors with the Abigoba band that invites Sabine Kouli, Enzo Carniel's new project with “House of Echo” and Guillaume Naturel's 4tet with Anne Paceo. Besides the best regional big bands, the world's best big bands will also be in Vienne this summer with the presence of the Stanford Jazz Orchestra with guest artist Jon Faddis. Cybèle's aim is to discover new talents such as Canadian bass player Carl Lacroix, Swiss pianist Colin Vallon and the 15-year-old pianist A Bu. Since dance and jazz have always got on well with each other, festival goers will be able to learn the ropes of lindy hop on the Kiosk stage on Sundays during the festival. After the success of the past two editions, the programme will once again include a show for young audiences at noon with Le Migou & Steve Waring and the “Nanan” show. Just pass through or stop by or sit down… There is always something going on in the Cybèle’s gardens from morning to evening!
Rézzo Focal Jazz à Vienne
National jazz springboard
For its 11th edition, the Jazz à Vienne festival wishes to open up its programme to the emerging French jazz scene. The aim is to support and highlight the new generation.
RéZZo FOCAL Jazz à Vienne was born further to Jazz à Vienne's will to bring new jazz talents to the forefront. For the selected groups, this national springboard is a genuine opportunity to play in professional scenic conditions in front of an informed and large audience.
