Rural Nations (Scotland) CIC is an artist led production company based in Stornoway which commissions film, experimental theatre and strategic arts projects.

Working across a broad portfolio of arts initiatives Rural Nations CIC delivers both an annual International Film Festival and produces our own Island originated professional theatre and short film projects in partnership with artists and organisations based across the UK and from other countries.

Rural Nations facilitates the Arts nan Eilean rural venue promoters network bringing in to the Islands small scale touring live performance (theatre & dance) including schools and community workshops with visiting practitioners. The company also delivers Digiheb a young people's film making project in collaboration with An Lanntair and also adult acting workshop programmes.

Currently the company is entering a new phase of research and development where we are looking at digital innovation using theatre and storytelling presented in the context of gaming and virtual space.

Job Title: Tutor (camera)

Organisation : Rural Nations (Scotland) CIC

Reporting to: Creative Director, Rural Nations Scotland CIC

Job Family: Specialist professional.

Duration of Post: 2 years part time.

Working Hours: Part time flexible post equivalent 1 or 2 workshops per week evening and occasional weekend work will be required.

The contracted Tutor will be subject to Disclosure Scotland PVG check.


Engagement is on a fee basis.

Grade/Salary Range: Sessional rates: £75 per session 2017/18, £80 per session 2018/19. On submission of invoices.

Pension contributions will be paid.

The Tutor will receive training in specific aspects of the job.

Location : workshop space at An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway on locations and / from the Company office.

Overall purpose of the Job:
To work as a Tutor in camera operation for the Digiheb project 2017/2019. Digiheb is a young people's workshop programme for 14 to 24 year olds which facilitates leaning of film making techniques. Young people are supported to make their own short films in every aspect by industry professionals. The films are showcased locally and participants are supported to enter their work in young people's film festivals. The Project is funded by Young Start / Big Lottery and supported by Rural Nations Scotland CIC and An Lanntair Arts Centre.

Job Description
The post holder will assist the Digiheb Lead Tutor, Muriel Ann Macleod to deliver the weekly workshop programme.
This will include the following tasks:-


  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of the weekly Digiheb workshops providing support and teaching in the use of HD broadcast standard cameras including Sony 4K and HD System Cameras and Canon EOS 5D Mark III (Participants at Digiheb will be both beginners and short film makers with some experience).




  • The camera tutor should also have skills in the use of a variety of stills cameras and shooting film on Go Pro and mobile phones.




  • Assist and facilitate the development of the Digiheb participants film production projects. The group will select from a wide range of short film genre and formats including:- documentary, drama, comedy, science fiction, art film and film essay.




  • The Digiheb Tutor should have good listening skills and the focus of the work is on helping the young people realise their vision for their short films.




  • The Digiheb Tutor should also have a working knowledge of Final Cut Pro and similar editing packages.




  • Assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the Digiheb project during the projects lifetime.




  • The Digiheb Tutor may be required to undertake short training sessions as tailored to their individual needs / skills set.




  • Undertake any other duties as circumstances dictate on the Digiheb project and as required by the Digiheb Lead Tutor.


Person Specification:-

  • Education to degree standard in media / camera operation or related subjects is desirable.




  • Have knowledge and experience of film production as a Director Of Photography on a variety of projects.




  • Knowledge of editing including use of Final Cut Pro and /or Avid and other programmes.




  • A knowledge of current film making and/or film exhibition and production trends is desirable.







  • Have excellent team working and negotiation skills.




  • Friendly, professional approach, experience of dealing with young people.




  • Good communication Skills (written and verbal).




  • Ability to speak and write Gaelic is desirable but not essential.
