German officials are warning that the Nord Stream running through the Baltic seabed will block access to the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście for a couple of years. In the construction agreement, the RFN Ship Transport Office states that big vessels will not be able to float over the pipe which will transfer gas from Russia to Germany.
German officials admit that it may be possible for some of the ships to find moving over the pipe unworkable. In order to diminish the difficulties with maneuvering, they propose that the location of the pipe be described in detail on nautical charts for each captain or helmsman to have a full perspective of his ship’s whereabouts and to choose the best possible route for it – wrote Nasz Dziennik, which got insight into the construction agreement of the Federal Office of Ship Transport and Hydrography (BSH) in Hamburg.

Dominion Gas, based in Aberdeen, signed a £1.7 m deal to become the main supplier for the Nord Stream Project.
The Nord Stream gas pipeline links Russia and the European Union via the Baltic Sea; it is expected to transport up to 55 bn cubic metres of gas annually, which is enough to service more than 26 m households.
Italian oilfield services company, Saipem, awarded Dominion the work. This follows Saipem’s successful contract for all pipeline activities in June 2008.
Doug Crighton, Managing Director of Dominion Gas, said, “As a result of this contract we have already begun investing in new equipment to meet the demands of the project.”
The contract involves Dominion supplying all welding gases and equipment to enable construction of the pipeline. The company have begun operation at Norrköping, Sweden, and anticipate completion in two years.
Crighton continued, “Dominion has now been the primary industrial gas supplier for two of the world’s longest subsea pipelines – an achievement which we are very proud of and our teams are looking forward to getting this project up and running.”
