7th Adnan Division (Motorized Infantry)

During Operation Desert Storm. the VII Corps' mission was to attack to penetrate and envelop Iraqi defenses to destroy the Republican Guard forces in zone. The 1st Armored Division deep operations went after elements of the Iraqi Adnan Division. On 27 February 1991 the American 1st Armored Division fought remnants of the Iraqi Tawakalna, Al-Madinah and Adnan Republican Guards Divisions about 50 miles east of Al Busayyah. The 3d "Phantom" Brigade, 3d Infantry Distinguished itself as the Advanced Guard Brigade of the 1st Armored Division during offensive operations against the Iraqi Republican Guard Forces Command (RGFC) during Operation Desert Storm from 24 to 28 February 1991. On February 26, the Brigade was ordered to attack east to gain contact with and destroy the RGCE in zone. The 3d Brigade began an aggressive and continuous movement to contact which covered 74km in 12 ½ hours, while fighting multiple engagements throughout the day and night with elements of the 52d, 17th, Adnan, and Tawakalna Divisions. On 27 February, the 3d Brigade was ordered to transition to pursuit operations to establish contact with and destroy the RGFC forces in zone. As the Brigade attacked and fought through the Adnan Division, securing a RGFC major logistics base, it captured 465 EPW's and made contact with the Medinah Armored Division. As of early 1997 the Republican Guard Adnan Division was reported to have deployed from its base in Mosul to Deebaga, Makhmour, and Al-Dibs, towards Arbil. Its command center was at the Al-Dibs -- Mosul -- Arbil intersection. By October 1997 Iraqi Republican Guard units had built up in the area of Makhmur, 30 km southwest of Arbil. The Medina Al Munawara armoured division and the Adnan mechanised infantry division moved to the area with 200 tanks, four battalions of heavy artillery and over 10,000 troops. As of early 1999 it was reported that the "Adnan Forces" Command (Quwat Adnan Hares Jimhouri), under the Command of the Allahu Akbar Forces-Northern Corps was based in Mosul. Opposition sources claimed in January 1999 that the losses inflicted on Saddam's regime during Operation "Desert Fox" included 48 killed among officers and other ranks with 151 wounded. Destroying or damaging 22 tanks and armored vehicles. The destruction of light and medium weapons armory that included 720 assault rifles, 56 mortar cannons and 2740 crates of ammunition, plus the destruction of 6 surface-to-air missile launchers. As of March 1999 it was noted that the number of Tikriti officers who occupied important positions had increased, which negatively affects other commanders and senior officers, because the situation minimizes the chances of their promotion. In the Republican Guard Takritis were commanders of the Adnan Division and the armored Nida Division. 11th 12th Mechanized, 21st Armored Brigades

Al-Abed Division (Motorized Infantry)

The Republican Guard includes at least one mechanised division - the Al-Abed (al-Abid) Motorized Infantry Division. In January 1991 the formation of five new Republican Guard divisions was announced all motorized infantry. The names of only three of them were known to Central Command at that time: the Al-Abed, Al-Mustafa, and Al-Nidala Divisions. The name of this division is sometimes reported as "Al Abel" though this is apparently in error. In November 1996 a large number of troops, reinforced by T-72 tanks, were deployed around the Altun Kupri area, 30 km to the south of Arbil. These forces were affiliated with the Republican Guard's Abid Forces. As of February 1997 it was reported that the Republican Guard Al-Abed Division was at its base in Kirkuk and had not deployed, though it was under alert to deploy. By early March 1997 the Al-Abed and Hammurabi Divisions of the Republican Guard, as well as the 2nd Division and the 10th Armored Brigade had concentrated along various axes towards Sulaimaniya. The Republican Guard's Al-Abed Forces Command of the Northern Corps (Allahu-Akbar Forces Command) which is based in Kirkuk, moved to the area of Nahiyat Al-Rabee' (Qara Hanjeer), joined by the 2nd Division which is based in that area. As of late 2002, the Al Abed Division had been disbanded. 38th, 39th 40th Mot Bdes

Al Nida Division (Armored)

In early October 1994 the Al Nida (the Call) Division of the Republican Guard [also known as the Anedaa Division] began moving from the Mosul rail yard and the Baghdad area to positions in southern Iraq. These elements of the al Nida Division left the northern region where Kurdish activity had previously been a problem. All these units were fully equipped with ammunition, food, and fuel, leading the United States to conclude that this was no mere exercise. The CINCENT assessment that the crisis was not past was confirmed on the afternoon of 13 October when brigades of the al Nida division halted their northward movement near the city of An Nasiryah. This halt quelled any talk of canceling US force deployments into the AOR. The UN Security Council unanimously passed resolution 949 on 15 October. It limited Iraqi military strength near the Kuwaiti border to those forces present before the RGFC movements. By 18 October, the al Nida was moving north again. As of early 1997 it was reported that the Republican Guard Al-Nida'a Armored Division had deployed at Qal'at Saleh in Amara Governorate, towards the Iranian border. As of early 1999 the "Al-Nida' Forces" Command (Quwat Al-Nida' Hares Jimhouri), under the command of Al-Fathul Mubeen Forces-Southern Corps, was headquartered at Ba'quba and Al-Kut. Opposition sources claimed in January 1999 that the losses inflicted on Saddam's regime during Operation "Desert Fox" included 147 killed among officers and other ranks with 227 wounded, including 4 officers. 23 field artillery canons of varying ranges were destroyed. The armory belonging to the "Al-Nida' Forces" was destroyed including 470 assault rifles, 4500 hand grenades, 2650 crates of ammunition, 98 cases of land mines, 62 mortar canons. 27 tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed and 9 others were damaged. An anti-aircraft battery containing 18 anti-aircraft guns and missiles was destroyed. 14 batches of ammunition were also destroyed. As of March 1999 it was noted that the number of Tikriti officers who occupied important positions had increased, which negatively affected other commanders and senior officers, because the situation minimized the chances of their promotion. In the Republican Guard Takritis were commanders of the Adnan Division and the armored Nida Division.
