Lesson 1 We learn English

We learn English at school. We have three English lessons a week. At our English lessons we speak, read and write. We read English texts and do exercises. We write on the blackboard and in our exercise-books. We like our English lessons. We like to speak English. We want to know it very well.

Our teacher asks us questions and we answer them. Olga Ivanovna is our teacher. She teaches us English. She is a good teacher. She speaks only English to us.

LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The problem of learning foreign languages is very important today. Students should learn foreign languages. They became important especially at the present time.

Foreign languages are needed as the main and most efficient means of information exchange between the people of our planet.

Today English is the language of the world. Over 350 (three hundred and fifty) million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, in the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada and South African Republic. As a second language it is used in the former British and US colonies.

It is the major international language for communication in such areas as science, technology, business and mass media. English ought to be used as one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. It is the language of computer software, literature, education, modern music, international tourism.

Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patience. But every educated person, every good specialist has to know English, because it is absolutely necessary nowadays.

It is we’ll known that reading books in the original, talking with the English speaking people will help a lot. When learning a foreign language you are to learn the culture and history of the native speakers. You may learn any foreign language. They are all important.

LEARNING BY HEART
A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his owe language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some children who live abroad with their parents seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not so easy to learn a second language, because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects as well.

The best way for most of us to remember things is to join them in our mind with something which we know already, or which we easily remember because we have a picture of it in our mind. That is why it is better to learn words in sentences, not by themselves; or to see, or do, or feel what a word means when we first use it.

The human mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photographs not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photograph with a camera, there is much to do before the photograph is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can make a picture remain for ever in the mind.

Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.

Lesson 2 My College

Every school has a library. Pupils come to the library to take books on different subjects.

MY FRIENDS

My name is Aleksey. I'm a second-year student now. The college, I am at, trains engineers for almost every field of engineering physics. There are several faculties at our college. I study at the faculty of automatics and electronics. Like my father, I want to become an electronics engineer.

My family is miles away from the city I study in. I live in the students' hall like many other students do whose families do not live here. I've got some new friends at college. One of my friends is Peter, the other is Mike. I share my room with them.

Peter is a clever hard-working student and a first-class basket-baler as well. He is a very tall boy. He is strong in body and character. Peter doesn't like to talk much though he thinks a lot. He is very good at both physics and mathematics. Peter gets up very early. He doesn't like to be a minute late for his classes.

Mike is quite different. He isn't very tall, however, he is strong; he is a good boxer.

Mike is certainly very clever. He can talk well almost about everything - books, music, poetry, politics and other countries, philosophy and life. I think there is no field Mike cannot say something about. He knows a lot of funny stories and he always wants to tell them to you.

However, unlike Peter, Mike isn't an early riser. He always finds it difficult to get up early. He is generally the last one to come to classes, though he is the last one to go away, too. He always wants to tell you some new funny story. Everybody loves him very much though Mike never works as hard as Peter does.

Peter and Mike both play tennis but Mike isn't very good at it. He says he usually makes a lot of stupid mistakes when he plays tennis with Peter. Peter, however, is a very good player.

Lesson 3 My Working Day
MY WORKING DAY

Usually I get up at 7 o'clock on week-days. I do my bed and open the window. Sometimes I do my morning exercises, but not always. Then I go to the bathroom.

There I wash myself and clean my teeth. Sometimes I take a shower. After that I go back to my bedroom, dress myself and brush my hair. In five minutes I am ready for breakfast. I usually have a cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich. After breakfast I take my bag, put on my coat and go to the college.

I live not far from my college and it takes me only ten minutes to walk there. I am never late for the first lesson because come to the college a few minutes before the bell. I leave my coat in the cloakroom and go to the classroom. The lessons begin at eight o'clock and at half past 6 they are over. Sometimes after the lessons I go to the library to take some books. Usually do my home task at home. As a rule, I have no free time on my week-days.

Sometimes I have dinner at my college canteen. For dinner I usually have soup for the first course, meat or fish with some salad for the second. I drink milk or a cup of tea.

Twice a week I go to the swimming pool. I play volleyball in the college team and we have our training at our big gymnasium.

In the evening all the members of our family get together. We have supper together,-watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I like to read detective stories or books of modern writers. At about eleven o'clock I go to bed.

Oleg’s Working Day
Oleg is very busy on weekdays. Every morning he goes; school. The school is not so far from Danilovo. It is on the nearest farm. The boy goes there in a bus. The bus takes boys and girls and carries them to school.

Here is Oleg's working day. The alarm clock rings at o'clock and Oleg gets up. He does his morning exercise at the open window, washes and dresses. Oleg's mother gets up an hour before Oleg. She prepares breakfast. After breakfast Oleg leaves home. The bus is willing for the children near the shop. Oleg goes to school with friends He stays at school till 2 or 3 o'clock. Then he goes home. His mother waits for him. They have dinner. After dinner he rests a little or helps his mother or father. Then he does his homework on different subjects: in English, history, mathematics, physics and others.

Sometimes Oleg stays at school a little longer. There is good library there. Oleg likes to work in the library. He often does his homework there.

In the evening Oleg likes to stay at home. He watches TV, listens to the radio or reads a book. He sometimes goes for a walk with his friends. On Saturday and Sunday Oleg often goes to the club.

AT SCHOOL AGAIN
Summer is over and it is autumn again, beautiful as ever. Even if you are no artist at all you can see its beauty. It is a season when the trees are simply fantastic — yellow, red, green and brown, not just one brown, but browns of all possible shades: light brown, dark brown, yellowish brown and all of a richness that only an artist can see and describe.

Victor is back in Vorontsovo. He has just come but his thoughts are still in Kiev where the autumn is so beautiful.

This is not his first visit there. He has already been to Kiev
and he has learnt its streets, roads, parks, theatres, cinemas
and old and new beautiful buildings. He easily recognizes the
streets, buildings, buses, parks and the noise. Noise is every
where. Now he is with his classmates and the usual talk begins.

"Hallo, Victor!"

"Hallo, Pete."

"I am very glad to see you again. How is everything?"

"Thank you, fine."

"Now tell me, where have you been all the time? I haven't seen you for ages and you haven't written a word. Did you go anywhere?"

"Certainly, I did. I have just come back from Kiev."

"How did you like it? Is it a good place to go to?"

"Splendid! You must go there some day, too."

"I certainly shall. And I shall write letters to you as I know you like to get letters."

On Sundays I usually do shopping. My Mother tells me what to buy; I take a shopping bag and go shopping. As a rule I go to the shop near my house. In the evening our family gets together. We have supper, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I like to read detective stories or books of modern writers. At about eleven o'clock I go to bed.
