1001 Antarctica — Zay Harding’s epic adventure in Antarctica begins with sea kayaking and penguin watching in Paradise Harbor, sails to historic Port Lockrov where he observes the work of Ukrainian biologists, unsuccessfully attempts to climb the treacherous Mount Scott, meets with U.S. scientists at Palmer station as he learns about the effects of global warming and the plight of the Adélie penguin and finally crosses the perilous Drake Passage on his way back to the South American mainland. 1002 Barcelona City Guide — When you think of Barcelona, you think of the architect Gaudí, and Megan McCormick visits some of his most famous creations, including El Park Güell, Casa Batlló and the spectacular basilica, Sagrada Familia, still under construction more than 120 years after the first brick was laid. Megan also takes in the works of artists Picasso and Miró, enjoys the colorful atmosphere of Las Ramblas, shops at the Barrí Gotic, explores the mysterious magic shop known as El Rey de La Magia and takes day trips to Cadaques (home of Salvador Dalí) and Sitges, known as a favorite destination for gays from all over Europe. 1003 Nigeria — Adela Ucar kicks off her visit in the capital of Lagos, an anarchic and electric city with a vital night life. Next she journeys to Yoruba Land in the southwest, thought to be the site of the Queen of Sheba's tomb. Adela later meets witch doctors in Oyo, travels to the historic walled cities in the north, hunts for bargains in the ancient Kurmi Market, visits the traditional Fulani village of Chafe and encounters a rare mountain gorilla in Nigeria’s eastern highlands. 1004 Globe Trekker Special: Pirates, Galleons & Treasure — Megan sets out in the footsteps of famous mariners and renegades of the Caribbean to learn firsthand about 250 years of perilous treasure hunting and brutal competition among the Spanish, English, Dutch, French and Portuguese. These pirates were vying for gold, silver and other riches. Galleons were sunk, thousands were killed and, for centuries after the New World was discovered in 1492, it was the pirates who ruled the waves. Megan

1005 Tunisia & Libya — Ian Wright begins his trek in Tunis, where he explores the lively markets. He visits El Djem, an enormous coliseum, heads to an oasis in Tamerza and tours Nefta, the center of Sufi mysticism. Ian searches for the “Star Wars” set in Tozeur, hunts with desert greyhounds in Douz, visits a cave dwelling in Matmata and explores the island of Djerba before stopping off at the site of General Rommel’s last stand. Next it’s off to Libya and a trip to the souks of Tripoli. Ian tours the magnificent Roman ruins at Leptis Magna, then heads south through the desert to Sabha, where he skis down the sand dunes. His final trek takes him to the rugged Akakus Mountains. (Feeds 5/1/11)




1006 Central China — Megan explores Shanghai, where she tries her hand at contortionism with the famous acrobats. She learns about the silk trade in Suzhou, travels by train through the Yellow Mountains, fishes the Yangtze River, visits the caves at Dazu and marvels at the Terracotta Army in X’ian. 1007 Micronesia — Micronesia is a chain of more than 2,000 islands, and Megan starts on Guam, site of a U.S. military base. Next it’s off to Pohnpei, the capital island, where she hikes through lush vegetation to the Kepirohi waterfall. Megan explores the archaeological ruins of Nan Madol, dives among sunken Japanese warships at Chuuk and kayaks on Jellyfish Lake in Palau. She ends her travels on Yap, where she observes a colony of hump-backed turtles and swims with the manta rays. (Feeds 5/15/11)




1008 Sri Lanka & Maldives — Megan begins her visit in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, where she samples the exotic cuisine. She tries stilt fishing at Weligama, visits a Buddhist temple in Matara, explores a topaz mine near Ratnapura, tours an elephant orphanage in Pinjnewala and takes part in Esala Perahera, Sri Lanka’s biggest festival. Her trip ends on Dhangethi, one of the spectacular Maldive Islands, where she encounters exotic tropical fish and lush foliage. (Feeds 5/22/11; encore broadcast on 8/28/11)




1009 Globe Trekker Special: World War II in Europe — Our Trekkers visit many of the European sites that played a major role in World War II. From the forests of Compiegne in northern France to the island of Crete, where veterans and locals recount the first major airborne invasion by the Germans, this episode takes viewers on a haunting journey of discovery. Other locations include Nuremberg, Vienna, Dunkirk, the Italian town of Anzio, the Normandy beaches, Dresden, Berlin and Auschwitz. (Feeds 5/29/11; encore broadcast on 12/4/11)

1011 Arab Gulf States — Megan discovers the stark war memorials in Kuwait and dives for pearls in the Arabian Gulf. She explores the world’s first women-only supermarket in Dubai, treks in Oman’s Hajar Mountains and unearths the ancient city of Ubar, dubbed the “Atlantis of the Sands.” (Feeds 6/12/11)




1012 Venice City Guide — Justine Shapiro takes in the city’s landmarks nestled along the Grand Canal — the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and St. Mark’s Square and Basilica. She cheers on the racers at the Regata Storica, an historic gondola competition full of pomp and circumstance. She walks the red carpet at Venice’s Film Festival, views the art at the city’s Biennale Festival and enjoys medieval festivals on the mainland in Monselice and Asolo. 1013 South Atlantic — Zay takes an epic adventure to the ends of the earth, voyaging to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Orkneys, South Shetland Islands, Elephant Island and the Antarctic Peninsula. Following in the footsteps of countless explorers, adventurers, naturalists and conservationists, from Captain Cook, Scott, Amundsen, Shackleton and Darwin, Zay explores the South Atlantic’s frozen, wind-swept, white wilderness. 1014 The Netherlands — Brianna Barnes cycles her way through the Netherlands as she learns about Dutch resistance to Spanish rule and enjoys modern art in The Hague, surfs the North Sea in Sheveningen, earns her witch’s certificate in the medieval town of Oudewater, discovers the history of the tulip in Leiden, buys clogs and visits the cheese market in Alkmaar, explores a wind farm in Friesland and tests her skills in the canal jumping contest in Heidenskip. 1015 Globe Trekker Food Hour: Morocco — Ben O’Donoghue starts his culinary adventures with lunch at the camel market in Casablanca, learns to cook “harira” (the soup that breaks the Ramadan fast) in the imperial city of Fes, lives with a nomadic family in the high dunes of the Western Sahara, scours the markets in Marrakesh for ingredients to make the classic “tagine,” samples Berber delicacies in the High Atlas mountains and fishes for his dinner in the port of Essaouira. 1016 Turkey 2 — Adela encounters whirling dervishes and tranquil tea gardens in Konya, treks along the Lycian Way, relaxes on the sun-kissed beaches of Myra, visits the Sabanci Mosque and samples exquisite cuisine in Adana, explores the bustling bazaars and café culture of Gaziantep and experiences Kurdish culture in the basalt-walled city of Divarbakr.

1017 Ukraine — Holly Morris discovers an unusual beer hall in Lviv, visits a shaman in the Carpathian Mountains, witnesses the joyful pilgrimage of Hassidic Jews to Uman, encounters a former Cold War missile base in Pervamaisk, observes a bride agency in Kherson, visits the Livadia Palace in Yalta, meets up with Crimean War buffs in Sevastopol, explores the capital of Kiev and ventures to Chernobyl, site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. 1018 Deep South U.S.A. — Ian hikes through the Smoky Mountains; enjoys a music festival in Asheville, NC; explores the Freedom Walk and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthplace in Atlanta; witnesses a Civil War re-enactment near Mobile; and attends a reunion of the Tuskegee Airmen. He winds up his trip in Memphis for Elvis Week, where thousands of fans converge to commemorate the anniversary of “The King’s” death. (Feeds 7/31/11)



1019 Peru & Amazon — Bradley Cooper travels the path of the Incas, heading from Cuzco to Ollyantaytambo, site of their last great battle. Next he treks to glacial Ausangate Mountain where he takes part in the exuberant celebration of the Qollyur’riti Festival. Now we’re off to the Amazon, where Eils Nevitt travels from Manaus by boat to Anavilhanas Island. Along the way she fishes for the deadly black piranha, hunts for spiders and tastes a coconut maggot. Back in Manaus, Eils attends an initiation ritual with the Satare Maue tribe. She sails the Amazon to test her jungle survival skills and glimpses a new species of dwarf monkey. (Feeds 8/7/11)
1020 Amsterdam City Guide 2 — Brianna Barnes and Jonathan Atherton travel to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands that was built around a network of beautiful canals overlooked by the gabled mansions of 17th century merchants. Jonathan visits the Rijksmuseum, which has a magnificent collection of paintings by the great Dutch Masters, while Brianna marvels at the artistic genius of Vincent van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum. She then visits a replica of an East India cargo, discovering how the great wealth of the city was extracted from the Dutch colonies in Asia, while on the other side Jonathan observes a dockland squat. Briana later ventures to the Anne Frank House and hears about her family’s last days in hiding from the Nazis. In stark contrast, Jonathan ends his trip partying at the Gay Parade, one of Amsterdam’s biggest events of the year. (Feeds 9/4/11)
1021 Globe Trekker Food Hour: Brazil — Merrilees Parker starts her journey in the Afro-influenced coastal city of Salvador, where she cooks a spiny lobster and a fish “moqueca” with a popular TV chef. She next journeys to the rainforest in search of Brazil nuts, exotic fruits and herbal medicines, then heads south to Recife, where Portuguese flavors dominate the cuisine. Merrilees samples “cachaca” (known as Brazil’s answer to rum), celebrates Easter at a spectacular open-air reconstruction of old Jerusalem, enjoys a festive barbecue with the famous gauchos and ends her experience in Rio de Janeiro, where she samples “feijoada,” the national dish. 1022 Southern Mexico — Ian participates in the unique Day of the Dead festival in Pazcuaro. After reveling late into the night, he goes to the old colonial town of Guanajuato, where he spends time with some Mexican cowboys and enjoys delicious Mexican food. From there Ian goes to Acapulco, where he takes in the glitzy nightlife before watching the famous cliff divers. Continuing his search for the perfect beach, he heads to Puerto Escondido for the annual surfing festival. He then travels to the Mayan ruins of Palenque, before visiting the Zapatista stronghold of San Cristobal and ending his journey with an amazing trek through the Lancondon jungle. (Feeds 9/18/11)
1023 Central America: Costa Rica & Nicaragua — Neil Gibson visits the Costa Rican capital of San José, where he gets caught up in election fever, samples traditional cuisine and visits volunteers trying to combat poverty in the city. He cruises to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and encounters tarantulas, deadly snakes and rare birds before arriving at Volcan Arenal, where he relaxes in the hot springs. In Liberia, he attends a bull fiesta where tries his hand at being a cowboy. He crosses the border into Nicaragua and stops at El Castillo, site of the only castle in Central America. Neil plays baseball on the island of Mancarron, rolls cigars in Granada and explores Managua, site of the devastating earthquake. He ends his trip at the Volcan Masaya, known by the Indians as the “land of the gods” and by the Spanish as “the mouth of Hell.” (Feeds 9/25/11)
1024 Bolivia — Ian begins his trip on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. In La Paz, he finds some unusual potions in the Witches Market, explores the silver mines in Potosi, visits the immense salt lake at Uyuni, experiences a spirited fiesta in Uncia, cycles through the lush Yungas region and ascends the Andean peaks of Huayana Potosi. 1025 Globe Trekker Special: Great Natural Wonders — Join the Globe Trekkers as they explore some of the world’s Great Natural Wonders. Megan McCormick discovers erupting volcanoes in Hawaii and Java, Ian Wright encounters the Arctic, Justine Shapiro hikes the Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia, Eils Nevitt treks deep into the Amazon rainforest, and Holly Morris travels with the nomadic Tuareg tribe in the Sahara Desert. Other destinations include Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Victoria Falls and spectacular national parks around the world, from New Zealand and Botswana to Kenya and Ecuador. (Feeds 10/16/11)
1026 Egypt — Megan starts her journey in the sprawling city of Cairo at the bazaar of Khan al-Khalili, open for business since the Middle Ages. From here she visits the mosque at Ibn Tulun, the legendary spot where Noah’s Ark came to rest. Megan’s next stop is Giza and the Great Pyramids, built as tombs for three Pharaohs. She arrives in the oasis town of Siwa, famous for its dates and olives, stops off in Bahariyya, where she is personally greeted by the mayor, and treks to Luxor for a hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings. Her final destination is Abu Simbel, the gateway to southern Egypt and home to the massive Sun Temple of Ramses. (Feeds 10/23/11)
1027 New Zealand 2 — Ian Wright and Zay Harding visit New Zealand, a land of unspoiled landscapes and immense natural beauty. They meet Maori warriors and watch canoe races, see firsthand the stunning locations for “The Lord of the Rings” films, dabble in extreme sports in Queenstown, hike in the glacial Mount Cook National Park, relax in the hot springs of the Great Barrier Island and participate in a sheep shearing contest at Masterton. 1028 Globe Trekker Special: World War II in the Pacific Islands — The “Trekkers” explore the epic events of World War II by visiting key locations in the Pacific, a region where great battles where fought and military history was made. This episode begins at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, then moves to Chuuk Lagoon in Micronesia, the base for Japanese operations against Allied forces in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and today a scuba-diving paradise, drawing wreck diving enthusiasts from around the world. Other sites include the Solomon Islands, Bikini Island, the remote village of Kokoda in Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Saipan and Tinian, a small island in the Northern Marianas archipelago and the take-off point for the Enola Gay’s mission. The episode wraps up with a moving visit to Japan and the Nagasaki Peace Park. (Feeds 11/6/11)
1029 Texas — We kick off this episode in Dallas, with stops at Cowboys Stadium and the Texas Book School Depository. Next it’s on to Fort Worth and a visit to the National Cowgirl Museum and the historic Stockyards, then on to Austin to soak up the history of Texas at the State Capitol followed by a sunset stroll across the Congress Avenue Bridge to watch the skies fill up with Mexican free-tail bats. Later we journey to Spindleton and the Lucas Gusher, the Space Center in Houston and a visit with former astronaut Alan Bean, the 4th man to walk on the moon, the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville and the Alamo in San Antonio, where we also celebrate at the Texas Folklife Festival. We experience the stark wilderness of Big Bend National Park, the strange phenomena of the “Mystery Ghost Lights” in Marfa and wind down the journey with a cruise along Highway 90 leading to the Texas-Mexico borderlands and the busiest international border crossing in the world. 1030 Papua New Guinea — The trekkers explore New Britain Island, the largest in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Inhabited by the indigenous Papuans and the Austronesians, the island was captured by the Japanese during World War II. Today the island’s traditional cultures are diverse and complex but there are several ancient traditions which remain active today, especially the Dukduk Secret Society. Next, we visit the township of Rabaul, once the provincial capital until it was destroyed in 1994 by a massive volcanic eruption. Rabaul is still a superb location for scuba diving, snorkeling and wreck dives. We travel onwards to the stunningly beautiful island of Bougainville, named after a French navigator, and an excellent location for wreck-diving and sea kayaking. (Feeds 11/20/11)
