Holdings: 1868-2002. ABS was first chartered in the state of New York in 1862, to certify ship captains. ABS verifies that merchant ships and marine structures presented to it comply with Rules that the society has established for design, construction and periodic survey. This title has a U.S./Canadian perspective. There are two sections the first covers U.S. and Canadian ship the second foreign ships. This is the reprint and update of a title is often known as the Lytle List and is an updated version of Merchant Steam Vessels of the United States, 1807-1868 (http://lccn.loc.gov/53001846). Mr. Lytle, was a former Deputy Commissioner of Navigation in the Commerce Department, and used abstracts of registers, licenses, and enrollments issued to various vessels and the copies of the actual documents that had been surrendered and sent to the Bureau of Navigation. There are several lists and each is organized alphabetically. List A is the primary list and contains the name tonnage amount that it could carry, the year and place built as well as the first home port. List B comprises Losses of the United States Merchant Vessels from 1807-1867 and contains information on the manners, place, and date of the loss and the number of lives lost. List C is Merchant Vessels of the United States Converted to Steam from 1807-1867. List D is Steam Vessels Mentioned in Contemporary newspapers or Other Sources but not in Federal Records for the years 1807-1867 and contains the names that were not registered, enrolled, licensed or inspected but it is not a complete list. There is also a compound name index.

A three volume annual, that provides both an inventory of vessel companies and their American flag vessels operating in the transportation of freight and passengers and a national summary of all vessels. An alphabetical listing of each vessel company name, address and telephone number is included as are characteristics of each vessel listed by vessel operator name. Volume One (National Summary) provides a summary of the vessel data detailed in the Waterborne Transportation Lines of the United States (WTLUS). Summarized vessel characteristics are represented in both tabular and graphic format. Volume 2 (Vessel Company Summary), provides a summary of vessel companies listed alphabetically by company name. Included in this publication are: the business address and telephone number, the Engineer District number, the TSOperator number (for usage in querying computer data), principal commodities carried, the points or localities and waterways between which or on which operated and the number of vessels reported by vessel type. Volume 3 (Vessel Characteristics), lists the vessel companies alphabetically and describes each vessel surveyed by indicating its name and number, Coast Guard number, net tonnage, type by VTCC code (Vessel Type, Construction and Characteristics) and ICST code (International Classification of Ships by Type; see Terminology for VTCC and ICST), register and overall length and breadth, loaded and light draft, horsepower, carrying capacity in short tons or units of cargo and number of passengers, height of fixed superstructures, cargo handling equipment, operating headquarters, and year built or rebuilt.
