SO YOU WERE IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT

WHAT NOW!

Below are some initial guidelines that you should be aware of immediately after an accident:

  1. Stop! Do not leave the scene of the accident.

  2. Be Calm! Do not make accusations or admit fault.

  3. Call the police! Contact the police as quickly as possible.

  4. Call a family member or friend! If you need someone to help, call someone you trust.

  5. Get detailed information! Get all pertinent information of other driver and witnesses.

  6. Don’t discuss details with anyone but the police! Don’t discuss details with any insurance adjuster, yours included. When asked if you are hurt, just explain that is impossible to tell at this point.

  7. Take photographs! These can be very useful later on.

  8. See your chiropractor! Make sure you list all your complaints no matter how minor. When the adrenalin is flowing after a collision, you often do not feel the pain initially and do not realize that you are hurt until later. A minor whiplash could cause long term problems.

  9. Report the collision to your insurance company and the other driver’s! Do not give any statements or discuss what injuries you think you may have. You simply want to make a claim.

Auto accident injuries can be very serious. Sometimes the damage to the vehicle may be minimal, but don’t be deceived, as that doesn’t mean your bodily injury is minimal. The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the force applied, especially to the cervical spine (neck). In some cases, it can take days, weeks or even months for symptoms to show up. That’s why it is always essential to have a good Chiropractic evaluation following an automobile accident, as early care and treatment means recovery will be quicker and will minimize any possible long term effects.

If you are urged by your insurance company to settle your case quickly, please be aware that you will lose your right to have the insurance company pay for treatment if physical problems should arise.

It is very common, especially after a serious collision, to

go to the emergency room to be “checked out”. Unless

you have life threatening injuries, see your chiropractor

first. Emergency room and ambulance services alone, can

potentially use up the medical-pay benefit available in

your auto insurance policy. Do you know what MEDPAY is?

Visiting a chiropractor after a car accident is a step in the right direction.
