PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND MECHANICS OF THE SHOULDER WITH LAB

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This new edition of the shoulder course was developed from new research and clinical findings. New ideas and techniques have been incorporated into the course content. The use of special tests and a review of musculoskeletal dysfunction is essential for the clinician. This course will teach the therapist those skills necessary in making a thorough evaluation of the shoulder to make a differential soft tissue diagnosis. The evaluation of the musculoskeletal system is essential for designing a rehabilitation program. State of the art techniques will be discussed along with the most current research findings.



OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion, the participant will be able to:



  1. Describe normal mechanics of the shoulder and their application to evaluation and treatment.

  2. Perform an evaluation of the shoulder complex, structural, muscle testing, and special tests.

  3. Describe the interrelationship of soft tissue structures between the shoulder and the Upper Q.

  4. Perform special tests to the shoulder.

  5. Perform individual mobilization techniques to the shoulder.

  6. Design and develop a rehabilitation program for the stiff and painful shoulder.

  7. Identify various pathologies of the shoulder.

  8. Identify surgical procedures for repair of the shoulder traumatic injuries.

  9. Peripheral Nerve mobilization techniques


FORMAT:

This is a 13.25-hour course with laboratory experience, equivalent to 13.25 CEUs. CEU approval has been submitted to AOTA, NATA, and chapters of APTA.


AUDIENCE:

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and Athletic Trainers Attendees need to bring: a goniometer, an exercise mat, and pillows. Please wear lab clothes.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Dr. Donatelli has been in practice for 35 years. He is the founder and owner of Donatelli Physical Therapy & Sports clinic in Las Vegas, NV. His major focus has been outpatient physical therapy specializing in orthopedics and sports. In addition to treating patients his is a national and international lecturer. He has published 12 books and 40 article in peer review journals. Here are some of his career highlights.

  From 2010- 2011, Dr. Donatelli was asked work with the Chinese Olympic Teams at the Chinese Olympic Center in Beijing China. His responsibilities included, teaching the team physician’s and working with the Olympic athletes.   From May of 2001-2008, Dr. Donatelli was Andy Roddick’s PT – While working with Dr. Donatelli he ranked in the top 10 for 10 years on the ATP tour.   

  Dr. Donatelli was the Director of Medical Services for the Champions Tennis Tour (over 35 professional tennis players) that was also the Masters Tour for ATP 1995-2001. Jimmy Conners and John McEnroe were among the players on the Champions Tennis Tour. He was the Physical Therapist for the ATP tour, Mexico City and the Lipton ATP tennis tournaments in 1996, Germany Open 1997, AT&T Challenge in Atlanta 1985-1999.

          From January 2004 Dr. Donatelli has worked on tour with the PGA for 6 months. In 2007 Dr. Donatelli traveled on the LPGA tour for two weeks and has worked with several professional golfers including Natalie Gublis, Amy Hung, Kim Hall and Fred Funk.

          Dr. Donatelli served as a member of the PBATS (Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society) Research Committee from 1996-2001.  In addition, he has served as a physical therapy consultant to the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers baseball teams.

          Dr. Donatelli has worked with numerous professional athletes including Marquis Grissom (San Francisco Giants), Michael Barrett (Chicago Cubs), Brian Jordan (Atlanta Braves), Dale Murphy (Atlanta Braves), Tony Armis (Montreal Expos), Dan Uggla (Washington Nationals) Terrance Newman (Dallas Cowboys), Matt Stenchcome (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), David Riske (Milwaukee Brewers), Tyronn Lue ( Orlando Magic) Dahntay Jones (Indiana Pacers), Tayshaun Prince ( Detroit Pistons) Marcus Banks (Toranto Rapers), Al Harrington (New Knicks) and many more.

          Dr. Donatelli has published four textbooks – Physical Therapy of the Shoulder 5th Ed, Orthopedic Physical Therapy 4thed Biomechanics of the Foot and Ankle 2nd Ed and Sports Specific Rehabilitation 1st.  

Dr. Donatelli lectures throughout the United States, Canada, England, Iceland, Italy, Prague, Greece, Ireland, China, Scotland, Australia, Russia, Spain, Portugal and lectured at the Swedish Foot and Ankle Society. Dr. Donatelli has been the keynote speaker for the Romanian Physical Therapy Association for 2003 - 2007. Dr. Donatelli lectured in Italy, in 2010, at the International Conference on Manual Therapy and Exercise.  
PHYSICAL THERAPY FUNDAMENTALS AND TREATMENT OF PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION

Course Description:

This 2-day live course focuses on the basic skills necessary to evaluate and treat patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. This will include lecture and lab material related to pelvic anatomy, urinary/bowel incontinence, pelvic pain, and use of sEMG biofeedback. Participants will be expected to participate in an external only examination during lab. No internal examination will be completed during lab, only will be discussed during lecture. Participants will learn techniques to complete a thorough evaluation including documentation, functional outcomes, goal writing, and proper billing in order to effectively utilize skills learned immediately upon return to clinic setting.



Course Objectives:

  1. Correctly identify the anatomy of the urogenital triangle for females and males

  2. Identify the causes of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction

  3. Palpate the external structures of the pelvis, hips, abdomen

  4. Correctly identify the causes and treatments associated with female and male urinary and bowel impairments such as:

  1. Urinary urgency and/or incontinence

  2. Pelvic organ prolapse

  3. Prostate dysfunction

  4. Erectile dysfunction

  5. Constipation and/or bowel control

  1. Identify and prescribe proper treatments for pelvic pain

  2. Correctly identify causes and treatments of pediatric/neurological/geriatric urogenital issues

  3. Correctly evaluate and treat pregnant and post-partum impairments

  4. Correctly evaluate, document, code and bill pelvic floor treatments

  5. Correctly utilize biofeedback equipment and other modalities associated with pelvic floor dysfunction

  6. Develop a marketing plan to promote pelvic floor rehabilitation



FORMAT:

This is a 11.25-hour course equivalent to 11.25 CEUs.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:
Trisha Rieffenberger, PT, MS works as a physical therapist and co-owner for Big Stone Therapies in Watertown, SD in an outpatient private practice. Trisha obtained her Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of South Dakota in 2006.

Her clinical interests include women’s health, manual therapy, sports medicine, pediatrics and occupational health. Trisha attended her training for the female pelvis from Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute in 2010 and has been treating women, men and children in the clinic for pelvic floor issues ever since. She is trained in internal vaginal examination and treatment as well as interventions for incontinence, urgency and pelvic pain. She is very open about sharing her story of pelvic pain after the birth of her first child and how physical therapy helped her.

Trisha is an active member of the South Dakota Physical Therapy Association and serves as the Payment Chair. She attends the APTA Payment and Policy Forum yearly to represent South Dakota and help learn ways to advocate for payment of PT services. She is also a member of the Private Practice Section and has attended a couple national PPS conferences as well.

Trisha has traveled to Guatemala 4 times in the past 10 years to do outreach therapy mission work with USD and Big Stone Therapies. Trisha enjoys public speaking and has participated in several educational seminars in her community to improve awareness of physical therapy services. She is also a credentialed Clinical Instructor through the APTA. Trisha was awarded the Physical Therapist of the Year in 2014 on behalf of the SDPTA for her dedicated service and commitment to the field of Physical Therapy.

Trisha lives in Watertown, SD with her husband Greg, and three children Gabriella, Madelyn, and Ryder. She stays busy with family activities, church groups, working out, book club, and outdoor activities. Originally from Rapid City, Trisha enjoys snow skiing and hiking when able. She spends her free time in the summers at the lake with family, riding bike/walking, and chasing kids.
Kimberly Pearson, PT, DPT works as a Physical Therapist for Big Stone Therapies, Inc. in Watertown, SD in an outpatient private practice clinic. Kim received her Doctorate degree from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. She provides physical therapy services specializing in pelvic floor therapy, pediatrics, geriatrics, as well as general orthopedics. She is also LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) BIG certified and the Otago balance program leader.

Kim most recently is pursuing her Certificate of Pelvic Health (CAPP- Pelvic) through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and is in the process of writing a case report to receive full accreditation. She is a trained clinician in internal vaginal and rectal mobilization in addition to treatments of incontinence, constipation, and pelvic pain. She is a current APTA member and a Women’s Health section member. She is also a member of the South Dakota Physical Therapy Association (SDPTA) in which she is on the marketing committee. Just this last year, she received the Genesis Award through the SDPTA.

Kim and her husband Nick live in Watertown, SD with their 2 young children, Ella and Logan. Outside of work, Kim enjoys hunting and fishing, camping, reading, and going to the river to visit family.
