FY02 Certified Local Government Grants

Background Summaries

Grantee: City of Detroit

Project: Historic Fort Wayne Post Theater and Guard House Roof Repairs

Grant Amt.: $31,000

Description: The roofs of both the post theater (1939) and the guard house (1905) at the National Register listed Historic Fort Wayne have collapsed, allowing water to saturate the interiors. This project will completely replace both roofs according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. It is hoped that this is only the beginning of a great deal of work at Historic Fort Wayne with the end goal of reopening portions to the public.

Grantee: City of Detroit

Project: Jefferson East Business District National Register Nomination

Grant Amt.: $16,000

Description: The grant will support the preparation of a National Register Nomination for the Jefferson East Business District located in the southeast corner of the city of Detroit. This eight block district includes numerous 1920’s and 30’s commercial structures, including the Vanity Ballroom. The district designation will encourage investment in these commercial buildings through preservation tax incentives.

Grantee: City of Monroe

Project: River Raisin Battlefield Archaeological Management Plan

Grant Amt.: $17,000

Description: The City of Monroe will develop an archaeological management plan as the first step to better understanding River Raisin Battlefield, not just as a battlefield during the War of 1812, but also as a site of early French and Native American settlement. The plan has a strong heritage tourism component, hoping to use River Raisin Battlefield as a learning opportunity for the general public.

Grantee: Washtenaw County

Project: Historic Resources on GIS (Geographic Information System)

Grant Amt.: $13,500

Description: The Washtenaw County Historic District Commission will compile, digitize and map historical survey information gathered over the past 20 years onto Washtenaw County’s GIS website. This information will then be available to the public.

Grantee: City of Lansing

Project: Interpretive Plan for the Automobile National Heritage Area-Lansing Corridor

Grant Amt.: $14,000

Description: The City of Lansing, with assistance from the Automobile National Heritage Area (ANHA) staff, will complete a thematic study of the early automobile industry in Lansing. As the larger manufacturers, such as R.E. Olds, have been sufficiently explored, the study will focus on the lesser known pioneers and the sites throughout Lansing that are related to their lives and achievements. The study will be used to develop an interpretive plan and walking or driving tour brochure for the Lansing Corridor of the ANHA.
