Overview

The purpose of this document is to provide the necessary information to submit crime reports into the statewide crime repository as well as submit NIBRS data to the FBI. Details include the submission methods, XML Schema, XML examples, code values, and validation rules.

Submissions will be sent to the statewide crime repository through file uploads to a SFTP. Once files are uploaded, automated processed will move these files and upload the data into ARIES.

SFTP Submissions

Submissions will be made to the ARIES SFTP. To gain access and credentials to this SFTP, please email the ARIES support team at aries@appriss.com. Additionally, you may call the support team during business hours at 866-495-4206.

A specific folder for the submission of your data will be provided to you. No other submitter will be able to view your submissions.

Notifications

Notifications can be configured to be sent out if there is a problem with importing a crime report into the statewide repository. Notifications are sent via email and can be configured by contacting ARIES support at aries@appriss.com or 866-495-4206.

There are two types of notifications that will be sent:

  • Invalid XML: If a file is sent to the state repository and cannot be imported due to the file not fitting the XML schema provided, an email will be generated and sent to the address provided by the agency. The email will detail the technical reasons for why the XML could not be imported.

  • If the crime report can be imported, but contains critical errors in the data, a notification can be sent with a list of what needs to be corrected. The agency may either send in a correction based on what is listed as needing to be updated or log into the ARIES web portal and correct the report there.

Data Elements

Below is a list of fields contained within the Crime Repository. Note the following expected formats for XML data submissions:

  • Dates (YYYY-MM-DD)

  • Integers range from -999,999,999 to 999,999,999

  • If not otherwise specified, the max length of a string is 9,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999 characters.
