The European explorers were looking for an all water route to Asia. They didn’t find it, but found land (New World) instead.

North Carolina-was a southern colony formed for economic reasons

Pennsylvania-Named after William Penn, was established for the Catholics and was a refuge for the Quakers.

Maryland-Safe haven for the Catholics.

Water, the coastline, ports and harbors

Where did most early colonists tend to settle and why?

Near the water because of the advantages it provided, ie trading, transportation, manufacturing.

They wanted a portion of the money the colonists would make. They would fund the explorations and in return, the colonists would send money from the New World.

Georgia-Founded by James Ogelthorpe. Was used as a buffer colony to Spanish Florida
