Statistics are from the summer of 2008. Recent students have transferred to the following: 9 Stony

Brook, 4 Queens College, 4 CW Post, 3 each to SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Purchase, and Hofstra, and 1 CUNY Brooklyn.

Rationale for Applied Music I,II,III,IV:

Four semesters of private lessons and juries/recital are currently required for the

A.S. degree in music (see 2008-2009 catalog page 163 under ), but are not offered

for credit and are not taught by Suffolk instructors.
Making the private lessons requirement a credited course taught by Suffolk instructors will accomplish the following:

  • Increase graduation rates

Between 2006-2008, only 8% of registered music majors took the

required four semesters of private lessons and were eligible to

graduate with the A.S. degree in music on time. Students cited

financial and transportation reasons for not taking lessons. Offering

lessons on campus and allowing students to apply financial aid to

the course will ensure more students stay on track and graduate on time.

  • Improve quality and consistency of instruction

Currently Suffolk music majors take private lessons with dozens of different musicians in the local community. Instruction is not consistent from teacher to teacher and supervision is difficult. This arrangement weakens the integrity of the lessons requirement. Colleges our students transfer to (mentioned below) and Nassau Community College employ their own private lesson instructors. Uniform and high quality instruction will improve students’ performing abilities and their success in four-year college entrance auditions.

  • Improve transferability

The four-year schools to which our music majors most often

transfer (for example, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY

Purchase, SUNY Stony Brook, CW Post, and Queens College)

require between 6-8 semesters of private lessons to graduate and

offer lessons from .5 to 3 credits. Suffolk requires four semesters of lessons, but offers no credit. This becomes problematic when a

student wishes to transfer his/her private lessons to a new

institution.
The cost of hiring Applied Instrumentalists (private lesson teachers) will be offset by an Applied Music fee of $450 per semester and a Music Performance Lab fee of $35. Applied Music fees are a common practice and range from $100 to $1,101 at neighboring institutions. (See below.) Current music majors are paying between $550-850 out of pocket each semester for private lessons in the community. In addition to Applied Instrumentalists, a full-time faculty member will oversee the Applied Music courses and will receive 1-credit release time or overload per course.

IV. RELATIONSHIP TO STUDENTS

Effective Date of the Program Revision:

Provide proposed date of implementation of proposed program. Be sure to allow appropriate time for approval process. If the current program needs to remain registered until students have graduated, please indicate the anticipated effective date of discontinuance by which time all matriculated students will have cleared the program.

The changes would be implemented in Fall 2010.

V. RELATIONSHIP TO FACULTY

  1. Number of new faculty positions required to implement proposed program revision.

Applied Instrumentalists (private lesson teachers) would be contracted as needed. Full-time instructors may teach Applied Music in their area of specialization only. The number of additional faculty needed will vary from semester to semester depending on the instruments studied by current music majors. In the Fall of 2006, the instrument distribution was 24 Guitar, 9 Voice, 4 Percussion, 4 Bass Guitar, 4 Piano, 3 Saxophone, 2 Trombone, 2 Clarinet, 1 Violin, 1 Viola, 1 Double Bass, 1 Trumpet, 1 Tuba. Given this distribution, 16 teachers would need to be hired. (One teacher cannot have more than 8 students.)

In addition to Applied Instrumentalists, one full-time faculty member will coordinate the Applied Music courses. He/She will be listed as the teacher of all the Applied Music

courses and will administer final grades. The additional duties of the Applied Music

Coordinator are as follows:
Assist in hiring of Applied Instrumentalists

Oversee scheduling of lessons

Communicate College and Music department expectations to Applied Instrumentalists

Monitoring course outcomes and conduct assessments

Oversee jury examinations and recitals

Lead three 1-hour recitations per semester with Applied Music students

  1. Number of new staff positions required to implement proposed program revision.
