Team Asha 2006 – Marathon Training Notes

  1. Publicity -

  • We held 3 information sessions (Georgia Tech, Emory, and Global Mall) in June (2-8 weeks prior to kickoff)

  • It is imperative to publicize early with e-mails/flyers going to GT, GSU, Emory, friends, S. Asian professional orgs. (i.e. NetIP, Indian doctors, lawyers), and restaurants, etc.

  • Publicity material on Asha Datastore (http://data.ashanet.org/datastore/) under Fundraising subfolder. This material includes Powerpoint presentation and brochures.

  1. Registration Forms -

  • All runners register by signing a commitment and liability form (VERY IMPORTANT). This can also be found in the Datastore under Forms subfolder.

  • 4-6 weeks prior to race, runners must

    • Sign recommitment form (on Datastore)

    • Sign up for the Atlanta Track Club (ATC) marathon/half marathon. This form is on the ATC website (http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/)

  • To get free entries for the race, contact Penny Kaiser at the ATC (pkaiser@atlantatrackclub.org or 404-231-9065 ext. 13). We received up to 30 free registrations for the half or whole marathon.

  1. Training –

  • At the kickoff run, interview each runner to recommend either beginner or advanced training schedule (Runner interview.doc on Datastore)

  • Training programs and long run maps are listed in AshaMarathonBooklet.doc

    • Water/Gatorade stops are placed at the start/finish and every ~3 miles after. Water stops are marked on the map directions.

    • Use Asha Wiki to have volunteers sign up for water stops.

    • Map directions should be distributed before every long run.

  • For advanced training, a track/speed workout is necessary. The details of the track workouts is also on the Datastore (Track workouts1.doc)

  • Weekend long runs should be in the morning (8am) and alternate between a hilly run (Ansley Mall, Buckhead, etc.) and a flat run (Silver Comet, Chattahoochee River).

  • Contact Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods, Wal Mart, and Einstein Bagels (Howell Mill) at least 4 weeks prior to kickoff. Ask these companies for water, gatorade, bananas, cups, cream cheese, water containers, and bagels (see Request for Bagels1.doc under Fundraising). This should be provided to the runners at all long runs.

  1. Talks -

  • A Nutritionist, Physical Therapist, Yoga instructor and Orthopaedic Surgeon talked with our runners.

    • Nutritionist (make this the first talk) – Page Love is a registered and licensed dietitian (Nutrilove@aol.com or 770-457-1457). She was great and had tips for vegetarians. Very useful handout.

    • Physical Therapist - Chris Olsen is a physical therapist at the Sports Rehab. Center (BrutalGirl22@aol.com). She was also very good and had handouts for stretching that are downloadable on our website.

    • Yoga and Orthopaedic Surgeon – These two are Jyotsna’s mom and dad. Jyotsna was a Team Asha runner and can contact her directly (j.vanapalli@emory.edu).

  1. Fundraising –

  • Set up each runner’s profile on website for online donations (see below for online account registration)

  • Pair each fundraising mentor (Asha volunteer) with 5 runners. This person is responsible for

    • Helping runner to set up and use his/her profile on website

    • Tracking each runner’s weekly and total donations

    • Providing suggestions to raise funds (bake sale, coin drive, etc.)

    • Providing fundraising letter to e-mail to friends/family (on Datastore)

    • Making sure that each runner is on pace to reach the fundraising goal.

  1. Website –

  • See other word document

  1. Miscellaneous -

  • Hold 2-3 socials throughout the training to have the team get to know each other. We had 2 outings: (1) Dinner at Little Azio with miniature golf and (2) Dinner at Bhojanic.

  • We bought jerseys from Asha-SV’s surplus for $12 each (good deal). However, we can buy them directly from the company Face First. They have the design for the Team Asha jersey. The name of the contact there is Gretchen (art@facefirstusa.com or 949-443-9895).

  • Have a pasta dinner the night before the race. Reward the top fundraisers. We gave the top 5 fundraisers $25 restaurant certificates.
