Homework 4

  1. The first four locations hooked up to the Internet (ARPANET) were UCLA, SRI (Stanford Research Institute), UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara), and the University of Utah.

  2. In networking, a packet refers to a unit of data that is transmitted over a digital network. It contains a portion of the message being transmitted, as well as routing information, addressing information, and error detection information.

  3. The Internet came before the World Wide Web. The Internet was first developed in the 1960s as a means of connecting computers together, while the World Wide Web was developed in the early 1990s as a way of accessing and sharing information on the Internet.

  4. Web 2.0 was revolutionary because it shifted the focus of the web from being a passive repository of information to a platform for active participation and collaboration. It enabled users to contribute and share content, and interact with each other in ways that were not possible before.

  5. The so-called killer app for the Internet was email. Email was one of the earliest and most popular applications of the Internet, and it played a major role in driving its adoption in the early days.

  6. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, which is a technology that allows voice and multimedia content to be transmitted over the Internet. It enables people to make voice calls, video calls, and other multimedia communications over the Internet.

  7. A LAN (Local Area Network) is a computer network that spans a relatively small area, typically within a single building or campus. It is used for connecting devices such as computers, printers, and servers within a small geographic area.

  8. An intranet is a private network that is used within an organization, while an extranet is a private network that is used to connect different organizations together. An intranet is used to share information and resources within an organization, while an extranet is used to share information and resources between organizations.

  9. Metcalfe's Law states that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of nodes (devices) in the network. In other words, the more nodes there are in a network, the more valuable the network becomes.

Exercise:

  1. The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers and other devices that use standard protocols to communicate with each other, while the World Wide Web is a collection of interconnected documents and resources that are accessed through the Internet.

  2. The Internet is a network infrastructure that enables communication and data transfer between devices, while the World Wide Web is a platform for sharing and accessing information and resources over the Internet.

  3. The Internet is a physical network of devices and connections, while the World Wide Web is a virtual network of information and resources that are accessed through web browsers.
