Lunker redfish rolling in surf 3-5-13

The surf seemed to be the hot spot last week, with redfish being the catch of the day.

Many of the redfish being reported at local bait shops were at the top of the limit of 27 inches and weighing more than 8 pounds. A few years back, if you weighed in an 8-pound redfish someone would ask how many sinkers you dropped down its mouth. Not any more. I went back to some old records that I keep and about three years ago there were two redfish over 8 pounds caught; last year there were more than 12, and one red hit the scales at 10 pounds. That fish was caught by John Fanell fishing a live 12-inch mullet.

Local angler Gene Van Dorpe has been fishing the surf in Port Orange. Gene says the water is clear and he has been catching enough big whiting that it is worth the drive. Gene said he also has been catching a few keeper pompano using sand fleas.

Out on the Flagler Pier, the sheepshead bite has returned with many of the stripers hitting the planks at 4 pounds or more. Most of the anglers are using dead shrimp or sand fleas for bait. A few Spanish mackerel have also come over the railing. Look for schools of Spanish to start showing up from the south as the water continues to warm.

Pier manager Bud Sawyer said that they have also been catching some big trout, whiting and black drum. Bud weighted a 20-pound black drum caught Saturday. The best time to fish is on an incoming tide. Bud also said that they saw the first manta ray around the pier on Saturday. It shouldn't be long before we start to see cobia with the rays.

Spotted sea trout are being caught at the Jacksonville Beach Pier, but most are small, according to notable local angler and retired policeman Butch Garvin.

At St. Augustine, smooth-talking Don Edwards says good numbers of whiting are available to surf fishermen, even with strong west or northwest wind. Find a sheltered beach area near a high sand dune, and soak shrimp on bottom. Edwards recommends the marker 38 area of the Intracoastal for black drum.

Surf & Piers

You know it is Bike Week when those who favor black leather, boots and beards arrive at area piers to chase the sea's bounty. Rhonda Nelson, at Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores, spilled the news in her weekly report.

“We're seeing whiting, flounder, trout and bikers,” Nelson said, with a laugh. “Bikers love to fish, wear their leathers. It's going to be fun week at Sunglow.”

Despite the wind and chill, Nelson said Sunglow came alive Wednesday, as anglers reeled in whiting and trout chasing dead shrimp while others were catching sheepshead on sand fleas.

“Once it warms up and the wind calms down, we'll see plenty of whiting, blues, sheepshead and black drum this weekend,” Nelson said.

To the north, the Flagler Beach Pier reported a mixed bag of fish during the past week, with whiting being the top catch. Other species included sheepshead, black drum, blues, Spanish mackerel and jacks.

Surf fishing has been steady. Jeff Burkehead, at Fishin' Cove Bait & Tackle, said anglers are catching huge whiting on the New Smyrna Beach side of Ponce Inlet.

“A whole lot of whiting being caught in the surf and some pompano, too,” Burkehead said. “I mean, they're catching whiting by the bucket loads.”

Whiting are one of the few fish that have no size or bag limits, and anglers are taking advantage of this flurry of fish activity.

“It's some of the biggest whiting I've ever seen,” Burkehead said. “A guy showed up here with a couple weighing 3 pounds. It looked like a redfish. I couldn't believe they were whiting.”

The whiting are biting in the Daytona Beach, too, according to Donald Parksey, at Don's Bait & Tackle in Port Orange.

So so whiting bite at county pier. BD better, especially south. Either terrible or good surf fishing. Doesn’t sound that good for whiting.

Steady stream of Whiting and sheepshead at sunglow

“The pier has been really good,” Wynn said. “It's had a real good trout bite. We had a guy come back with a 6-pound trout the other day. They are also catching black drum, sheepshead, nice whiting and plenty of blues.”

Ponce Inlet & Halifax River

Wynn said inlet anglers are catching decent reds, sheepshead and black drum.

3-22-13 Guana south

Beautiful day, light breeze, 1-2' surf, water a little cloudy with a bit of grass & seaweed. Fished the full incoming tide 1230-530 using fresh shrimp. 14 whitings (refunded 4) and 6 snapper blues (10-12" refunded all). Didn't see any mole crabs and still haven't caught my season's first pomp yet.  Rains and winds forecast for rest of weekend so may not make it back out again.

So I had never heard of fish bites before I joined this forum a few weeks ago. Friday I decided to try them, my research found that not to many sell them so I went to Ronalds on Dunlawton to pick them up and some frozen shrimp and headed to Ponce.

What a terrible day of fishing. All I caught that looong day was a lizard fish, a whiting and some small dark colored snapper. And none of those were caught on hooks that had fish bites. The guy I bought them from said they were great and that he almost always uses them exclusively in the surf. I had no such luck. Plus those things are pretty damn expensive, are they really worth it?

Bill Dugger at the Flagler Pier said that the big waves over the weekend have really slowed the fishing. Big sheepshead are still being caught, but the waves are making it very hard to fish for them. Spotted sea trout are the most consistent fish being caught at the pier, along with big whiting and small black drum. The wind has made the water clear and along with that the pompano have returned. Most fish, however, are undersized.

The weather has kept most of the offshore boats tied to the docks. Those who have gone offshore to fish the local reefs are catching larger numbers of black sea bass and red snapper, both which are still out of season.

Rhonda Nelson, at Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores, said there has been a steady stream of whiting and sheepshead being caught off the planks.

“We've got bikers and spring breakers catching all kinds of fish,” Nelson said, adding that the pier rents tackle.

At the Flagler Beach Pier, anglers keep track of the current catch by posting on a chalkboard near the office. On Wednesday, the board had only one fish listed, a whiting.

Capt. Todd Wynn, at The Fishin' Hole, said the Daytona Beach Pier has enjoyed an incredible run this week.

“The pier has been really good,” Wynn said. “It's had a real good trout bite. We had a guy come back with a 6-pound trout the other day. They are also catching black drum, sheepshead, nice whiting and plenty of blues.”

Spanish mackerel arrive on area waters

Something about fishing “firsts” brings a spark to the eye of the avid angler. From the opening of grouper season to the initial reports of warm-weather bream beds, fishers celebrate learning of new catching opportunities.

That's why the following report is likely to brighten a few days.

Last Friday, Capt. Jim Keith and his party were fishing the grass flats well off Snake Key when what must have been Cedar Key's first wave of Spanish mackerel arrived. Capt. Jim's clients for the day were newlyweds, Charles and Amber Finch of Oviedo.

Local angler Andrew Price has been scoring big on large whiting in the surf with sand fleas south of the Jacksonville Beach Pier.

Surf around Saint Aug is slow. If you find a good hole u can load up. But the fish aren’t moving N-S

3-29 and 31, 2013

Fished from 2PM to 6PM on Friday not expecting much since the high tide was missed at 10AM that day. But I thought it would be a good opportunity to see the troughs at low tide. I caught just two whiting, one medium and the other a good 16". Both were caught with my brand new 15ft rod, bought at Walmart for $40 (can't beat it). Sand fleas were very scarce and the water was chilly at 60 degrees. I left not thinking much of it since I had missed the high tide.

On Sunday, I timed it right by starting to fish at 9AM with the high tide being at 11:45AM. This time it was even more frustrating, not a bite fro 3 hours! Very unusual because I always catch whitings on an incoming tide. I was using everything I had: frozen clams, shrimp, sand fleas (I was able to dig some here and there) and all kind of fishbites. Same result for the other fisherman around me. Around 1PM I finally caught 2 whitings and left frustrated. On my way back home I stopped at the nearby bait store to ask what's biting and he confirmed my suspicion. The last couple of days he said the bite had shut down most likely due to the water temperature dropping from 67 a week ago to 60!

What a difference a week makes, last weekend I caught my first limit on pompanos and this time I almost got skunked. Hopefully it will warm up this week!

It was a great day! Surfchef and I had a a blast. Don't know why sand fleas and shrimp did nothung. Salted clams were magic! Weather and surf conditions should be the same for tomorrow, so if you can go........

went to playalinda today with my father in law, did not get an April fools joke played on us thankfully. THE FISH WERE BITING!!!!!

We fished lot 7 across from 7am til 11am  in coming tide. used frozen clams and live fleas. whiting were tearing the bait up!!!  Every cast it seemed produced fish. at leasr it felt that way.  we left with our cooler FULL.  first time in a very long time for us. caught some very nice pomps as well.  we deffinately had to get the bait out there. small fish were close in  bigger ones out far. thank goodness for distance casting.

The wife and I fished Playlinda Beach Lot 9 today from 7AM until 3PM and caught 29 whiting over 11 inches long and 1 keeper pompano.  Water was clear and surf was only 1 to 2 feet.  We were able to keep the bait out with 1 3 oz pyramid sinker.  From 7 until low tide at 8:15 we had 1 whiting and when the tide changed the action was steady until high tide at 2:30 then only an occasional bite.  The whiting were caught mostly on sand fleas until about 12 then the only thing they would hit were salted clams.  I think we only caught 2 whiting on fresh dead shrimp.  The day was beautiful and one of the best days fishing we have had so far.

4-4-13

Local surf fishermen are having banner days from Ponte Vedra Beach to St. Augustine, and also north from Little Talbot Island to Fernandina Beach. Some pompano are beginning to show in the surf, but sea trout, redfish and large whiting are stealing the show. St. Augustine Pier fishermen have been getting some sheepshead, too.

.The most interesting news is a pretty good bite of pompano, but not in the surf. Doesn’t sound all that great. There are a few big whiting along pontre verda
