Colossal head in basalt, Olmec, La Venta archaeological site. The head is from the Middle Formative Period. These heads once faced out from the ceremonial center, guarding the sacred architecture. Reproductions are now found at most of the archaeological sites, the originals being housed in the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City.
