My intention in this scan of the last decade and a half of the digital environment is to show how its development has influenced the present and to make explicit the connection between today’s cyberinfrastructure and the principles and practices of digital curation. Both depend on an interconnected network of trustworthy repositories, well-curated data, and a diverse body of experts who contribute to the preservation and discoverability of digital content with long-term value. The challenge is ongoing and is too complex to be limited to one domain. Economies of scale and international cooperation are necessary to preserve the human record in the digital age. With continued support and investment in both distributed technical infrastructure and diversified human expertise, the benefits of cyberinfrastructure will extend broadly to all areas of research and discovery, to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge, and to the quality of life in the digital age.

Data Conservancy, initially funded by a 2009 DataNet award from NSF’s Office of Cyberinfrastructure to Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and partners, is headquartered at JHU’s Sheridan Libraries. The Data Conservancy focuses on finding institutional and community solutions to digital research data collection, curation and preservation challenges. It includes: 1) a research program to examine research practices broadly across multiple disciplines and deeply in selected disciplines to understand the data curation tools and services needed to support the interdisciplinary research community. 2) an infrastructure development program, 3) data curation educational and professional development programs, and 4) development of sustainability models for long-term data curation. JHU had received an IMLS grant in 2006 to develop a model and framework for connecting data with publications, which was ultimately adapted and implemented by the Sheridan Libraries as a service that supports data deposit for arXiv.org pre-prints.
