The Telephone Inventor

Alexander Graham Bell came to America because his father was invited to provide training to teachers at the Boston School for deaf - mutes. He said no to this invitation and passed it down to Alexander. So, Alexander went to Boston in his place. He provided successful training, and was asked to train more teachers, but this time, it was in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Eventually, he set up a private practice. Alexander Graham Bell was attracted to the U.S with a job opportunity that would allow him to teach deaf children. Yes, Alexander Graham Bell spoke English even though he was from Scotland. Alexander and his parents traveled to North America from Scotland on the S.S. Nestorian. When Alexander Graham Bell arrived in America, there were 37 states. The president was Ulysses S. Grant. The 15th amendment was passed, guaranteeing that African Americans had the right to vote. Christmas was a declared a federal holiday. This was a much different time than today.

Some hardships that Alexander Graham Bell faced were he had two brothers that died of tuberculosis. An obstacle Alexander Graham Bell faced was that others claimed they had invented the telephone or had the idea before Bell. It took 18 years and over 550 court cases, but Alexander Graham Bell won every battle. Alexander’s childhood was rich in science and arts. His mother had a big influence on him. She was deaf and this taught Alexander to look past people’s disadvantages and find ways to help them. Alexander Graham Bell was homeschooled. He did not face discrimination. People believed in Alexander Graham Bell’s way to teach deaf students. Without a doubt, Alexander Graham Bell is brave because he was not afraid to fail with his inventions. There are many inventions that make Alexander great. Not only did he invent the telephone, but he taught deaf people. Alexander was a scientist. He even developed a metal detector to find bullets in someone’s body. Bell’s father and grandfather had all been involved with work on perfecting speech. Alexander Graham Bell has been through a lot.

I chose Alexander Graham Bell because he had many inventions and had a lot of accomplishments. This person inspired me by making the telephone. It was a really cool invention because it is a way to communicate without sending letters to them or going to talk to the person yourself; you could just talk to them through the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell represents our country from the telephone. Without him making it, we might have never found a way today. Now, almost everybody uses the telephone. The telephone is widespread. The cellphone is a follow up from the telephone.

The big problem that Alexander Graham Bell faced in his life was about the telephone. A woman named Elisha Gray claimed that she had invented the telephone before Bell. Bell was being questioned if he stole the idea of the telephone from Gray. Some people questioned who deserved the credit for making the telephone. They both filed a patent on the same day. There was a question raised about whether Bell was inspired by the design of the phone or vice versa. In the end, Alexander Graham Bell and Gray’s problem was solved by Alexander Graham Bell finding out that he signed a patent, so he had proof that he invented it first. Alexander Graham Bell was alleged that he bribed a patent officer to process his application before Gray’s and to allow him to look at Gray’s design before he submitted his. My opinion of Alexander Graham Bell did not change because you knew that even if he didn’t invent the telephone first, he still created it and had many more accomplishments.

For Alexander Graham Bell to become great, he invented many inventions. One of the inventions that he invented was the telephone. In 1876, at the age of 29, was when he created the telephone. He formed the Bell Telephone Company. After making the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell made the photo phone. A photo phone is a device that enabled sound to be transmitted on a beam of light. Bell and his assistant, Charles Sumner Trainter, developed the photo phone using a sensitive selenium crystal and a mirror that would vibrate in response to a sound. When his son Edward died of respiratory problems, Bell responded to that quickly by designing a metal vacuum jacket. It would facilitate breathing. However, his greatest invention was the telephone. The telephone is a huge impact on world history.

A quote that Alexander Graham Bell liked to say was, “Before anything else, preparation is the key success!” This means, if you ever do something, you must always prepare before you do whatever you are doing, you must always prepare before you do what you are going to do. You might hear this a lot today, but not in the exact same quote. Now, you know where the person who said it got the quote.

Some really interesting facts about Alexander Graham Bell are: he had a nearly deaf mom. Everybody would always have to scream in her ear. Alexander just softly spoke into his mom’s ear right next to her, and she could hear him. Another interesting fact about Bell is that he helped Helen Keller. He did this by her speaking her thoughts into Bell’s hand using a manual alphabet in 1887. That would tell Alexander what she is thinking about. When Alexander’s sons died in 1881 from respiratory problems, Alexander had created a metal vacuum jacket. The jacket would facilitate breathing. It was used in the 1950s.

To be a true representative, Alexander Graham Bell provided the world with the telephone. Since he was 18, he had been working on transmitting speech. On March 10th 1876, he was successful. Bell had founded a school for deaf-mutes in Boston, Massachusetts. Alexander Graham Bell is the key person of all the people who had great contributions because without the telephone, people would not be able to communicate by transmitting speech if they are not in the same room. He was very proud to be an American because there were many opportunities in America. He was able to conduct his experiments and produce his inventions with little or no interference from the government.

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847. The city and country he was born in was Edinburgh, Scotland. He came to America at the age of 23 on August 1, 1870. He was very educated and made it to Milton College. His hometown in America was Washington D.C. He married Mabel Hubbard. He had two sons. One of them was named Edward who died in 1881 when he was born. Robert died in 1883 when he was born. Elsie May Bell died in 1862 at the age of 84. Marian Hubbard died in 1962 the age of 82. Alexander Graham Bell had an awesome life!
