OTHER INFORMATION ON ST ERTH FAMILY 2 (continued)
Lease 05DEC1808 (read in Exeter Record Office)

  1. Francis Rodd of Trebartha Hall Cornwall Esquire

  2. Amos Tregenza of St Hilary labourer

Wastrel containing land part of Treven Rent 5 shillings counterpart lease

Lives Amos Tregenza age 29

Sarah his wife age 28

Amos their son age 8

AMOS married Sarah Williams and Grace Johns (St Erth Family 1)

Formerly it was thought that AMOS 1800 of this family after a first marriage (of which there is no information or children found) married for a second time to Grace Johns giving rise to all the children CHRISTIAN-JOHN 1832 to EDWIN-JOHN1847. However subsequently various records about these children and census records gave their father’s birth as around 1779 showing they came from AMOS 1779 not his son AMOS 1800. Several correspondents have commented on the confusion between and separation of records associated with these two AMOSs. Redrawing the tree resolves the problems of the missing first wife of AMOS 1800 and makes use of the record showing the death of SARAH Torgenzoe buried 06JAN1829 St Erth age 50 (first wife of AMOS 1779). It also gives logical dates for all the people in these families. Thus AMOS 1779 had children about as frequently as was biologically possible for his wives with the exception of a period from 1802 to 1811. His first child AMOS 1800 was born nine months after his first marriage and his last child EDWIN-JOHN 1847 born only ten months before his death in 1848. The gap in births is neatly filled by Unconnected Family 71 St Hilary as suggested by Lyn Nash lynnash@webaxs.net. Although the wife’s name is SALLY, the use of Sally as an alternative to Sarah was frequent and also could be a recording error considering the daughter was called SALLY. St Hilary is close to St Erth and the lease of 1808 (please see above) is in St Hilary. Thus this Unconnected Family is fitted in here. SARAH the first wife of AMOS 1779 may have died in childbirth as CATHERINE was born 1829 approx.).

Note:

  1. the use of the first and surname of the first and second mother in the first names of the children.

  2. the use of the surname Torgenzoe, Tregenzoe or similar.

  3. the absence of further information about AMOS baptised 1800 could be explained by his being the head of Unconnected Family 64 where he married around age 21 in Canada (as suggested by a member of that family)

  4. CHRISTIAN-JOHN baptised 1832 and described as female later married a man.

OTHER INFORMATION ON ST ERTH FAMILY 2 (continued)
SARAH 1846 conflicting information received about her surname
1. SARAH BIRCH illegitimate child of JOSEPH RUSSELL of Yorkshire. AMOS (which ?) shot him (source Mrs Isabella Bentley née Tregenza).

2. SARAH BIRCH daughter of JAMES HENRY BIRCH and REBECCA of Sturt St Erth (source Hambley-Rowe via CHARLES-WILFRID Tregenza).

3. SARAH RUSSELL age 30 father PERKS (no first name given) married AMOS TREGENZA age 31, father AMOS TREGENZA (source Penzance record no. 171 page 86 Madron 1876).

Note: a. SARAH née Birch father William St Erth Family 5 wife to ROBERT 1830 first cousin to AMOS 1842 St Erth Family 2 married to this SARAH née Russell ?

b. ELEANOR 1841 St Erth Family 5 married 1879 William-James Russell

(also in Pedigree Resource File http://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/S5MV-W12)

c. MARY St Erth Family 5 married William Birch

Note:

  • Will 49/1/1/77 in Cornwall Record Office, AMOS son of AMOS and SARAH 1808 St Hilary

  • Story that AMOS 1842 went to Patoni, New Zealand as a gold miner where he found the Kohinoor diamond (see also Unconnected Family 18). Probably mistaken for a gold nugget as that diamond was Indian ! Frequently Cornish miners in Australia or New Zealand sent home stories of big strikes or nuggets. There were entrepreneurial photographers in ports and mining towns that would take your photograph next to a large nugget (painted rock) to convince those back home of your success.

  • Lyn Nash believed that Unconnected Family 71 were also the children of AMOS and SARAH filling the gap between ROBERT 1802 and DANIEL 1811. Finding other records about AMOS his wives and children made this very likely so this change was made - see notes above on AMOS 1800.

  • See Lelant family for census record of AMOS married SARAH and St Erth 6 for JAMES married MARY

  • SARAH 1846 conflicting information received about her surname (see below)

  • Full marriage record of ROBERT 1801 to ELIABETH from Lyn Nash shows some conflicts:

ROBERT TregenzOE full widower labourer St Erth father JAMES TregenzOE labourer

Elizabeth Potter full widow St Erth father Richard Ellis miner
