Some decades back the middle and upper middle class households in Kuttanad considered the ownership of paddy fields as a symbol of their social status. Owners of large paddy fields commanded much social respect and acceptance. Many well-educated youngsters from traditional farmer households used to take up paddy cultivation as their full time job even though they had ample chances to get permanent employment in various government and private services. However, at present paddy cultivation in the study area has lost its glamour. The new generation of people from farmer households is now looking for white collar jobs and had developed a sort of aversion to take up paddy cultivation as their full time occupation.
