Open Floor, Mapping Exercise
: current partnerships between Clubs
British waterways + Clubs – very little they only operate the canal, there interests clash as BW are mostly responsible for the up keep and site lettings along the canal; no active management.
Existing, timetable in place. Over 10 years old. Gentlemen’s agreement between clubs.
Faces challenges with a predicted increase in traffic.
Existing communications between the clubs.
Area for focus; main usage strip from Harrison Park to Charlie Bridge turning point – approx 1600m.

Canoe is not a problem; they need to move the ‘slalom’ poles for when the canal boats come through Harrison Park.
Storage is a major issue, the ‘8s’ need storage in North Lanarkshire which is safe and lockable while on the canal or away from site.
There are approx 5 major rowing ‘boathouses’ along the canal including 1 canoe club with slalom gates and canoes.
Currently using Boroughmuir RFC facilities including the bar area along with energy gym for their members.
Forth CC are using the toilet facilities at Ashley Bridge due to no such facilities on site.

Forth CC – Involved in Active schools, 200 kids in the summer, also run adult courses – completely open to public (advertised on website).
St Andrews – Active schools, private donation which funds a 15hrs per week Development officer. Currently works in surrounding schools. They have 40 junior members but not enough coaches.
Need support with coach development.
Use Boroughmuir RFC and Kilted pig bar and are also associate members of Boroughmuir RFC; use their other facilities including meeting rooms etc.

Indoor Storage space.
Safer access to canal – speed of cyclists.
Changing, Toilets and showering facilities.
Need more coach/volunteers
Use of swimming pool for storage facilities for indoor canoe training.
Growing demand and traffic on the canal.
Parking issue, especially on a Saturday morning at Meggetland Sports Complex.
Timing of canal ‘dredging and weed removal’

Priorities for Clubs
: common themes
Access – St Andrews Boat Club
Crumbly Ramp
Poor Visibility
Want bushes removed surrounding the ramp
Need the above to enable the boat to be carried out sideways rather than length ways (adjacent steps) – would need consent from Historic Scotland
Need new improved ramp
Need bicycle slowing down measures – slalom style barrier, signs.
No problems from Forth Canoe Club
Boathouse - St Andrews Boat Club
Not Big enough
Rotting container
At the stage where they are turning away people from the club
Approx 40 boats stored at the moment
Need to build a 60 plus boat house and then use the current boathouse as a storage unit for the sculls.
They have already spoken to 5 other clubs in the area, not interested.
Finalising plans/proposal for the size of the building
So far they have had fairly ‘positive’ response from the planning office but have not yet submitted anything as of yet.
Parking not a particular problem from their perspective but need stricter management on a Saturday Rugby match.
No major problems from Forth Canoe Club however if possible would like a larger boathouse.

Sub Meeting with British Waterways, City of Edinburgh Council and St Andrews – Plans for the New facility. BW, CEC and JM.
