TOPIC 4 AND 5
Telecommuting/teleworking.
Telecommuting is away or an act of doing business from home or home employment away from office. Teleworking is anew form of work practice, which enables the decentralization of office work.
Benefits of Telecommuting
• Recruitment tool many companies use telecommuting as a path to attract and retain top talent. This is to avoid the cost of relocation.
• Expanded labor pool- micro focus, headquartered in Newbury, England, has several company programmers working from home, parents with young children.
• Staffing flexibility- American west vocations, located in Phoenix moved a group of agents home.
• Increased productivity- teleworkers and their managers report that workers get more done when out of the office.

• Disaster preparedness. Companies with teleworkers can continue going when disaster strikes, weather related or otherwise.
• Environmental benefits- if 10% of the nation workforce telecommuted one day a week, we would avoid the frustration of driving 24.4 million miles, we’d breath with 12,663 tons less air pollution
• Facility cost saving. If workers share offices on alternative days for example the amount of floor space is significantly reduced.
Disadvantages of Telecommuting
• Telecommuting can be hazardous to your career because your face isn’t being seen, it is easier for management to leave you out of decision.
• Some cost cutting corporations sometimes try to turn telecommuters into unprotected contract workers (who have no employee benefits or insurance.
• Home-based entrepreneurs put in long hours (to build and keep the business going) with few or no vocations.
De-skilling
De-Skilling It is where a personal competence remains unchanged but is no longer used or recognized e.g. the skills of bookkeeping has been removed by computerized accounting, so that accountants can concentrate on analysis and financial modeling. It is referred to as absolute if competence has declined, for instance as the result of a lengthened stay from work or the effect of working conditions of a damaging nature. The first definition moves close to the meaning which deskilling carries in legal language. In this content, it denotes downgrading to a skill level (qualification) lower than the level that was contractual or than the one that corresponds to the post occupied.
